injustice-header

NetherRealm’s DC Comics fighter, Injustice: Gods Among Us, is now available in stores for the PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360. But did you know that NetherRealm also released an iOS version of their superhero smash up a few weeks ago? Instead of trying to graft the complex mechanics of a modern-day fighter onto a mobile device, the team decided to turn it into a card-based fighter with experience points and upgradeable attacks…

…And microtransactions, of course.

Daily Scoop: April 16, 2013 – Back to reality

I went to MEPACon this weekend and played a buttload of Dungeons and Dragons! It was a good time, but I’m glad to be back to regular life, regular food, and regular sleep. Not that I didn’t appreciate three solid days of role playing, but after a while, everybody needs some sleep, am I right?

I’m super excited about the release of Pandora’s Tower today! I hope I can make some decent progress in Dead Space 3 before the Wii game takes over my entire life. And everyone keeps telling me to get Defiance and Injustice: Gods Among Us. Aieeee!

If you’re looking for some good deals, Amazon has Asura’s Wrath on sale for $17.64, which is 65% off the retail price. Scoop it up!

If you’re looking for t-shirts, you won’t be disappointed!

Criterion’s next project won’t be a racing game

criteriongamesAside from 2006’s Black, Criterion Games has stuck to the racing genre ever since their Burnout breakthrough back in 2001. But, according to Creator Director Alex Ward, the development team is stepping away from the racetrack for their next project:

After this initial bombshell, Ward continued to drop hints about what Criterion WASN’T working on, including a new Burnout game, a Need For Speed: Underground remake, Black 2, or a game based on Back to the Future.

However, Ward assured fans that the developer will return to the Burnout series someday, tweeting, “When it feels right we will make another one.”

The Wii U: It’s All Just A Little Bit of History Repeating

wiiu-history-header

Bashing Nintendo’s new console has quickly become a troll’s favourite pastime. Not a day has gone by in 2013 without a cluster of articles marked with the words DOOM and GLOOM in big bold letters, attracting fanboys from all sides of the fence like moths to a flame, caught in an endless argument of whose favourite manufacturer is better. Then news came that Deep Silver would not be publishing Dead Island: Riptide or Saints Row IV on the Wii U. It all reached a fever pitch during the GDC, when DICE confirmed that Battlefield 4 would not appear on the platform either. You could hear the carving knives being sharpened, with many asking how would Nintendo’s new console survive without major third-party support? Later in the week, Kotaku’s Kirk Hamilton asked Epic co-founder Mark Rein if the Wii U would run their brand spanking new Unreal Engine 4. His response, one of laughter, was hastily clarified on Twitter as Epic sought to smooth their relations not only with Nintendo, but gamers in general, who hounded Rein’s account. Giving Epic the benefit of the doubt, I could not help thinking that we’ve heard these arguments before.

Then I realised we had.

Sega announces Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse reboot

It’s a good time to be a fan of Disney side-scrollers from the late 80s/early 90s. Just a few weeks after Capcom announced DuckTales Remastered, Sega has confirmed that Castle of Illusion will be remade for the PC, PlayStation Network, and Xbox Live Arcade this Summer.

“The original Castle of Illusion was tremendously entertaining and has a well-deserved reputation as a Sega classic. Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse brings this great game to a new generation,” said Chris Olson, Vice President of Digital Business at Sega of America. “Mickey is back and he looks fantastic.”

If there’s any justice in the world, an Aladdin HD remake will be announced next…

Video game events at this year’s C2E2, that other Springtime expo

c2e2-header

While most of us in the games industry look to PAX East for our springtime gaming expo fix, there exists a relatively new pop culture event halfway across the continental United States that you wouldn’t ordinarily think of. That doesn’t mean that it’s entirely useless for gamers, of course, as there’s a fair share of gaming goodies to be had this year. I’m talking about the upcoming C2E2 event, as in the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo, which is coming up in just over a week’s time. And man, is there stuff to do.

On Friday, there’s a panel on the recently-released transmedia property Defiance, which is perhaps a major industry first in that it combines a television series with a persistent online gaming environment. That’s because it combines the game experience with a televised cable series, which you can watch on the SyFy Channel. Also on the list for Friday is a panel that basically explains the ins and outs of being the good guy in a MMO game, but unfortunately you have to pick one or the other. “The Making of Defiance, A Living Transmedia World” runs from 2:45 PM through 3:45 PM and “Playing a Hero in MMOs” runs from 3:15 to 4:15.

From there, you can make further plans based on your initial choice of the transmedia/MMO panels described above. There’s “Building Your First Video Game” from 3:15–4:15, which is followed by “How do I get my Comic Book Character into a Video Game?” from 5:45–6:45. Regardless of your initial choices, you can end with a panel on the “Future of Gaming from Consoles to Online” from 7:00–8:00.  Or you could skip the comic book character and online play sessions and go for something entirely different, since there’s a Q&A session with Felicia Day of the gaming-inspired webseries The Guild that runs from 6:30 to 7:30. And that’s just the first day.

Saturday brings a few more panels, including sessions on Injustice: Gods Among Us and Marvel Heroes from 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM and 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM, respectively. Or you can skip the Injustice panel and go for “Behind the Graphics: A Video Game Industry Round Table” from 12:45 PM – 1:45 PM. You can close out your weekend by taking in a behind-the-scenes panel on “Writing for Video Games” from 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM on Sunday. And while you’re on site, be sure to check out some of the exhibitors, including High Voltage Software (which is showcasing the failed WiiWare delivery turned mobile game known as Zoombies: Animales de la Murte) and a big, fat Capcom display run side-by-side with an IGN interaction, which is sponsoring the stage where a sold-out Kevin Smith event is taking place among others.

If you’re interested in any of the above, be sure to head down Lake Shore Drive in the Windy City from April 26-28 in the McCormick Place complex’s West Building. General admission tickets are $25-$55, or take your kids on the last day only and they get in free. Just make sure you act fast if you want in: the price goes up an additional ten bucks at midnight on the day before the event starts.
