EA refuses to refund gamers unable to play SimCity

simcity-header

It seems EA is going out of its way to retain the “Worst Company in America” award gifted to it by The Consumerist last year. Since the launch of SimCity on Tuesday, unhappy gamers have taken to the Internet to voice their frustration at a number of issues with the new title. While consumers have had to swallow the bitter pill that is the permanent Internet connection required to play the game, others have simply been unable to play at all due to server errors with EA’s Origin service. While EA and developer Maxis have been working to correct these issues, some gamers have simply decided it is not worth their time or effort, and asked for their money back.

The answer? “No.”

One user, going by the handle CalebPeters, posted a rather frustrating text conversation with the publisher’s customer support team on EA’s forum. During the conversation, he is refused a refund, despite drawing attention to a quote from Origin’s own Community Manager, “if you regrettably feel that we let you down, you can of course request a refund for your order” (the post has since been edited). When pressed, the agent states, rather worryingly, that “if you choose to dispute it, your account will be banned.”

To summerise, if you ask EA for a refund for a game that you cannot play because of their always-online “feature” and related server issues, it is completely at the company’s discretion to give one. If you challenge that decision, your Origin account will be banned. Consumer rights seem to be a thing of the past.

This is just one example. Many have voiced similar tales of woe on EA’s forum, as well as on SimCity’s Twitter account and MetaCritic, where the game has a current user rating of 2 out of 10. We can only hope this debacle serves as a valuable lesson to game developers, and that the burden of always-online will die a quick death.

Deadpool will be the Greatest Game Ever… according to Deadpool’s mom

In keeping with Deadpool’s comic book traditions, this none-too-serious trailer continues to break down the fourth wall, the titular character narrating this pastiche of other game previews. “You start with weird drony music, everything dark and foreboding. And stuff… Screw this!”

From here on in, we have air guitar, hand puppets, and Cable. That’s right, the trailer confirms the inclusion of Nathan Summers, the son of Scott Summers (AKA Cyclops) and Madelyne Prior (erm… AKA Madelyne Prior). The future soldier inflicted with a techno-organic virus partnered with Deadpool in what is arguably the pair’s best comic series, Cable & Deadpool. Also confirmed (via IMDB) is the inclusion of Cable’s other partner, the hot probability-altering assassin, Domino, as well as the whirlwind-generating marauder, Riptide, and everyone’s favourite Canadian, Wolverine.

While the juvenile, sexist humour may not be to everyone’s taste, the trailer at least shows that developer High Moon is willing to have a bit of fun with the design of the game, and that’s never a bad thing.

The Walking Dead: Season 2 will begin this Fall

walkingdead-header

Moments after winning a BAFTA for Best Story, Telltale CEO Dan Connors was cornered by an editor from Eurogamer in hopes of getting the first details about The Walking Dead: Season 2. Connors did not disappoint, replying, “We’re aiming for fall of next year.”

Wait, you mean Fall of 2014? Come on…

Apparently, that’s not what Connors meant, as he later told Game Informer, “The current estimated release window for Season Two of The Walking Dead is for fall of ‘this’ year (2013), and not ‘next’ year (2014) as has been reported after a recent interview. We apologize for any confusion and thank you and all of our fans for your continued excitement for Telltale’s series.”

Good thing he clarified. It’s bad enough having to worry about Valve Time and Blizzard Time. I didn’t want to have to add Telltale Time to the list.

The Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack marks the second batch of downloadable multiplayer maps, and it is clear that 343 Industries went with the “less is more” approach – believing less space leads to more intense, frenetic action. And wow, did it work like a charm.

Minecraft might come to PlayStation platforms, Wii U release unlikely

minecraftMojang may bring Minecraft to one or more PlayStation platforms after their exclusive agreement with Microsoft is complete, according to Lead Designer Jens Bergensten.

Speaking to iGamer, Bergensten said, “Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles. When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.”

Obviously, any deal between Mojang and Sony is still in the early stages, so exactly which platform Minecraft might come to (PS3, PS4, Vita) is still up in the air.

Bergensten was later contacted by Polygon and clarified the company’s position on a Wii U port, saying, “First of all, no doors are closed, but the reason I said that was that during the last couple of months we’ve been discussing the future of the console version of Minecraft, Wii U has barely been mentioned.”

Daily Scoop: March 6, 2013 – Level up

My class isn’t finished yet, but my grant proposal is nearly done! I’ve been dreading write this paper since I started the program a few years ago. And now it’s nearly behind me! It’s a joyous day, despite being a wintry mix outside. I am going to video game so much tonight my hands are going to cramp! Oh wait… I still have homework… well, I’ll just game a little.

No deals today, but I’ll tell you what I’m watching in my Amazon cart, if you really want to know. First is the aforementioned Bit.Trip Complete for $10.76. Now that the DS sequel is out, I’m really tempted to get Castlevania: Lords of Shadow for $19.59. And I really want to get Dead Island for $14.49, as well as Max Payne 3 for $17.77. Stop being so cheap, games I want! I mean, unless Dishonored wants to go on super sale… I won’t complain about that.

I’ve got a few good t-shirts for you:
