Warpback: What We Played in January 2013

warpback0113-header

The first month of 2013 is coming to a close, and we here at Warp Zoned have been busy little gamers! It’s been a mix between the old and the new as some of us wrapped up our backlog while others gleefully played on their Wii U GamePads (well, OK, just John). Whether we were catching up on old games or patiently installing new ones, we had a great time visiting old worlds and discovering “another world.” Read on to find out more about what we played in January!

Why I Bought A Wii U Game Without Owning A Wii U

wiiugamenoown-header

Yes, you read the title of this editorial correctly; I bought a game for a console I do not own. The game in question is Ubisoft’s ZombiU. It is not a gift or present for a loved one; I fully intend to use it myself. But why would I spend money on a game if I don’t own the console to play it on? That’s just madness, right?

Well, no.

The first reason I bought it was because I need new underwear (by all accounts I may need more once I have played ZombiU). British retailer The Hut was offering a deal; buy three pairs of boxer shorts at £15 ($23.75), and get ZombiU for £20 ($31.50). So I could pay £35 ($55.25) for boxer shorts and the game, or £40 ($63) just for the game. I like a bargain when I see one, so I snapped it up.

But again, I can’t play it. Yet.

Sony unveils teaser for God of War: Ascension Super Bowl ad

Do you know how you know you’ve crossed over into the twilight zone? I do. You enter the twilight zone when a video game publisher releases a cryptic teaser trailer like yesterday’s “Game Day” video, which is itself a teaser for another teaser trailer they released less than 24 hours later.

Got all that? Yeah, it doesn’t make any sense to me either.

But that’s just what Sony did. On Tuesday, the publisher pushed out the 17-second “Game Day” teaser that promises a further reveal on February 1. Today, Sony released a slightly longer teaser trailer for what we now know is a God of War: Ascension Super Bowl ad. This teaser again ends with the promise of more details on February 1. It’s neat, but it also makes the “Game Day” video a teaser of a teaser of a trailer.

And who wants to be the one to tell Sony that Super Bowl XLVII is actually scheduled for February 3?

XBLA Today: Skulls of the Shogun

skullsoftheshogun-header

The first cross-platform Xbox Live Arcade game is here. 17-Bit’s tactical action game Skulls of the Shogun can be synced with your Xbox 360, Windows Phone, Windows 8 PC, and Windows RT tablet so that you can always get a game in.

It’s available for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15) and features, I swear I’m not making this up, vibrant ghost-samurai warriors:

Skulls of the Shogun is a mashup between classic turn-based strategy and fast-paced arcade gameplay. Washing up on the shores of the afterlife, players meet and join forces with vibrant ghost-samurai warriors, magical animal-monks, and mustachioed samurai generals on the way to recapturing lost honor! Boasting an easy to play interface while retaining compelling depth, Skulls of the Shogun is a challenging test of skill for veteran gamers, but friendly even to players new to the genre.

Disney closes Epic Mickey developer Junction Point

epicmickeylogoDisney Interactive has announced they’ve shut down Epic Mickey developer Junction Point Studios. The announcement comes just two weeks after the reveal of the publisher’s huge Disney Infinity project, which is in the works at Avalanche Software, Disney’s sole remaining internal studio working on console development.

Disney released the following statement concerning Junction Point’s closure to the press:

“It was with much sadness that we informed our teams today of changes to our Games organization, which include the closure of Junction Point Studios. We’re extremely grateful to Warren Spector and the Junction Point team for their creative contributions to Disney with Disney Epic Mickey and Disney Epic Mickey 2.”

More than 50 employees were laid off as a result of the closure. Studio head Warren Spector told Gamasutra that he’s unsure where he’ll end up next.

PSN Today: Crysis 3 beta, GTA Vice City, Hitman HD Trilogy, more

crysis3-header

It’s another big week for the PlayStation Store as Sony and Electronic Arts have added a Crysis 3 open beta to the PSN. The beta is available to download for free by all PS3 owners from now until February 12. The digital download version can also now be pre-ordered through the PS Store, so you can be sure you’ve got it first thing on February 19.

Also available this week is Square Enix’s Hitman HD Trilogy. The up-rezzed versions of Agent 47’s second, third, and fourth games are available as separate PSN downloads or as one combined bundle.

Going back in time a bit, this week also sees the addition of a trio of games that were previously available as disc-only releases including Platinum’s Bayonetta, Konami’s Zone of the Enders HD Collection, and Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (that one’s a PS2 Classic).

There’s even that’s new to the PlayStation Store this week. You can read all about them after the break. And don’t forget to visit the PlayStation Blog for a list of this week’s new game add-ons.

halo4spartanops610-header

Rejoice, Halo 4 Spartan Ops fans: 343 Industries has kicked off the second half of Season One with Episode 6, the first of five new weekly releases for the popular four-player co-operative mode (and yes, I tried to squeeze in as many numbers into that sentence as humanly possible). And it is immediately apparent that 343 has listened to fan’s criticisms, because it starts you in the middle of a frantic battle and never lets up.

Daily Scoop: January 29, 2013 – It’s getting hot in here

Last week, the weather was in the single digits, but this week, things are going to change over here on the East Coast. Tomorrow, it’s supposed to be 60 degrees. 60 degrees! That means I only have to wear one pair of pants and two shirts, tops. Not the two pairs of pants, two pairs of socks, four shirts, and a winter coat that I’ve been wearing. A brief respite from the cold is nice, but this is just going to make me crazy.

Anyway, what deals are there today? Well, there’s a big Tritton headset sale going on over at Amazon. Check out the Tritton TRIAX-180 AX 180 Stereo Gaming Headset for $49.99, the Tritton Pro+ 5.1 Surround Gaming Headset for $169.99, and the Tritton Primer Wireless Stereo Headset for $79.99.

I’ve got two great t-shirts for you today:
