Naughty Dog shows more of The Last of Us at Gamescom

Naughty Dog has unveiled a new trailer for its survival action-adventure The Last of Us specifically for the Gamescom expo taking place in Cologne, Germany. It starts with a new cinematic before launching into previously seen in-game footage, cut to the warbling vocals of Hank Williams Sr. It moves with a tenacious pace, as the song cuts us with its apt lyrics, although I personally would like to see it edited to Hurt by Johnny Cash.

Actors Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson will be in attendance at this year’s Gamescom, explaining the depths they had to go to in order to convey their performances as the post-apocalyptic survivors Joel and Ellie. There will also be a playable demo, so expect to see more about The Last of Us in the coming days.

Hybrid Review: When Scribblenauts Attack!

Developer 5th Cell is best known for fun, family-friendly games like Drawn to Life, Lock’s Quest, and the truly innovative Scribblenauts. So it was quite the surprise when they announced their next project would be a violent third-person shooter, with Maxwell going postal after collecting one too many of those damn starites. Well, not quite (though that would be awesome); instead, they have created the sci-fi-themed Hybrid, featuring unique cover and mobility mechanics that differentiate it from the crowded shooter genre.

PSN Today: Papo & Yo, Shinobi, more

Sony’s PSN Play promotion continues this week with the release of Papo & Yo, a puzzle platformer that has gotten people talking thanks to it’s emotional punch.

Also available this week is CSI: Fatal Conspiracy and one of the most classic PS2 Classics, Shinobi. I had a blast with the game back in 2002 and I’m looking forward to giving it another shot.

More information on these three games can be found after the break and a full listing of this week’s game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation Blog.

PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale pushed back to November

It looks like we’ll have to wait a little bit longer to get our hands on Sony’s PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale. Thankfully, it’s only been pushed back a single month and will launch on November 20 instead of the game’s original release date of October 23.

Chan Park, the President of developer SuperBot Entertainment, said that his team needed a bit more time to polish the game. He also confirmed that they’re taking feedback from the recent beta and incorporating some of those suggestions into the final fame:

This [delay] will let us spend more time polishing and tuning the game, and it will give us a chance to incorporate some of the great feedback we’re receiving from the current limited beta to ensure we are creating the best possible fighting game experience. While it is our greatest desire to put this game into the hands of our fans as soon as possible, we do not want to do so at the sake of quality. The additional time will be well worth the wait, and are excited to know that our fans will have the ultimate brawler in time for the holiday.

Daily Scoop: August 14, 2012 – Nothing to see here, folks

Nothing. Nada. Zip. No deals, no t-shirts, no nothing today.

In fact, the only thing worth mentioning is that today is my anniversary with my amazing boyfriend, Anthony. He’s a wonderful boyfriend, my favorite person to game with, and my best friend. I’m a better person in part because of him. I never understand what people meant when they said “my better half” until now. He truly is my better half. I love you!

Dead Space 3 set for February 5, 2013; Limited Edition announced

Gamescom 2012 opens tomorrow in Cologne, Germany and many game publishers have begun to push out new announcements ahead of the big European show. For example, EA has announced that Dead Space 3 will be released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on February 5, 2013.

Not content to just announced the release date, the publisher has also confirmed that everyone who pre-orders the horror title will receive an upgraded “Limited Edition” complete with bonus gear:

“First Contact” Bundle
First Contact Suit: This unique EVA (Extra-Vehicular Activity) suit was built by the SCAF (Sovereign Colonies Armed Forces) for encounters with “foreign entities.” It sports a flamboyant golden finish to provide protection from long-term space exposure and thick armor for… unspecified reasons. The suit was given the nickname “First Contact” by the scientists who made it.
Negotiator Weapon: While technically classified by the SCAF as a “scientific instrument,” the gold-plated “Negotiator” is loaded with some surprisingly aggressive hardware. The overclocked, top-mounted Tesla Beam is capable of bursting a man-sized organism into several pieces with a single shot. The bottom-mounted Linegun appears to have been built with the sole purpose of cleanly dismembering organic tissue from a distance.

“Witness the Truth” Bundle
Witness Suit: These insulated suits were worn by a SCAF deep dig team assigned to exhume the darkest secrets of Tau Volantis. Whatever they found locked deep in the ice changed them forever. When they emerged weeks later, they were covered head to toe in strange graffiti and claimed to be “Witnesses to the Truth.”
Evangelizer Weapon: A modification of the standard AL-2 used by the Sovereign Colonies Legionaries, this version sports a souped-up AL-2g assault rifle on the top with an Emerson 2100 “Big Boy” tactical shotgun on the bottom. The surviving “Witnesses” of the SCAF deep dig team dubbed it the Evangelizer and decorated them top to bottom with strange symbols.

Be afraid Necromorphs, be very afraid.

Daily Scoop: August 13, 2012 – Manic Monday

It’s Monday! And there are, sadly, no deals. I think that’s for the best, friends, because this month is so full of games anyway that you shouldn’t be blowing your cash on easy deals. I’m already twitching, trying to choose between Sleeping Dogs and The Last Story. The gaming gods are so cruel to us!

The good news is that there are two nifty gaming shirts today. Woo!
