Moon Chronicles Episode 1: One Small Step Review: Good Moon Rising

moonchronicles-header

A lot of first-person shooter games were released during this past generation. Hell, it’s more than just a lot. It was an outright epidemic. It seems like someone released a new FPS every week. But what’s odd about this phenomenon is that a good majority of these genre titles only came out for consoles. The handheld systems were all but forgotten. Sure, there were a few exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, first-person shooters avoided the handheld systems like a red barrel (because as you know, it’s never good to stand next to a red barrel). Aside from the Call of Duty games, there weren’t a whole lot of options for those of us who liked their FPSs on the go.

Enter Moon, a title for the original Nintendo DS. Throwing caution to the wind, the developers at Renegade Kid felt that the popular system would be a perfect fit for their mature, story-driven first-person shooter. And it paid off. Moon released to positive reviews, with many praising the game’s graphics, framerate, and moody atmosphere. And although many clamored for a sequel, the rights for the title were held by Mastiff Games, and the Moon IP was stuck, stranded in suspended animation. Until now.

New trailer for Tetropolis promises 2015 release date

The last time we got our hands on Tetropolis, it won a PAXpocalypse Award as one of our favorite games of PAX East 2014. Since then, developer NextGen Pants has been hard at work adding “new content and challenges” to their puzzle platformer. After making all of these improvements (which are chronicled in an update to their development blog), the team is ready to show off some new gameplay footage as well as tease the dystopian society at the center of the game:

Tetropolis is a non-linear puzzle platformer set in a world obsessed with falling block puzzles. In the city of Tetropolis, thousands of game pieces are manufactured every minute in order to meet the demands of “the game.” You play as a square-shaped tetromino that has failed the quality check and has been discarded for not being perfect. Unlike other discarded pieces, you obtain the ability to change into different shapes, each one possessing its own unique ability that you can use to traverse the world.

Tetropolis will be available for the PC (and possibly other platforms) in 2015.

Gaze upon the Lycans of The Order: 1886 in this behind-the-scenes video

Previously, Ready At Dawn focused most of their marketing muscle behind the titular Order of The Order: 1886. But now they’re ready to show us the flip side of this centuries-long struggle. In a new developer diary, several members of the Ready At Dawn team revealed the Half-Breeds, a werewolf-like race of hybrids that are also known as Lycans.

So yeah, call them what you want, but they’re werewolves. In addition to giving us our first glimpse at this bestial group, developers from Ready At Dawn used the video to talk at length about the creative process behind their werewolves. It’s definitely worth a watch.

The Order: 1886 will be available exclusively for the PS4 on February 20.

Watch someone beat Super Mario Bros. in a world record 4 minutes and 57 seconds

This is just unbelievable. Someone named “Blubbler” has just set a new world record for an “Any Percentage” Super Mario Bros. speedrun. Are you ready for this? Blubbler was able to beat the game in four minutes and 57.69 seconds. I’ll say it again… unbelievable!

The previous world record was 4:58.09 by “Andrewg.”

Blubbler’s world record run required pixel-perfect movements and you can read up on some of these tricks and glitches at the Speed Demos Archive. Seriously, I am blown away. It’s just an amazing bit of platforming.

Nintendo Download: Shovel Knight, Castlevania III, Wii Sports Club, more

shovelknight-header

The time to dispense shovel justice is upon us. Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight is now available to download through the Nintendo eShop for the Wii U and 3DS. The ridiculously retro side-scroller has been available to Kickstarter backers since yesterday, but now everyone will get the chance to slam a shovel down upon the group of evildoers known as The Order of No Quarter.

While Yacht Club strived to make Shovel Knight as authentically 8-bit as possible, an actual 8-bit game is available to download this week via the Virtual Console. 3DS and Wii U owners are now able to purchase Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, one of the franchise’s best games.

If you’re looking for something a little newer, Nintendo also released the final two games in the Wii Sports Club collection: Baseball and Boxing. All five games can be downloaded individually from the eShop, or you can wait until July 25 to purchase the retail compilation.

More information on all of these titles (as well as many more) can be found after the break.
