Mass Effect 3 unboxing video features reversible FemShep cover

Your typical unboxing video usually features a nifty special edition packed with goodies. But BioWare chose to go a different route with their Mass Effect 3 unboxing, focusing on the standard edition instead. But towards the end they reveal a goodie nonetheless: a reversible cover featuring FemShep!

If this is what makes you resolve to buy Mass Effect 3, you can do so on the PC, PS3, or Xbox 360 on March 6.

Daily Scoop: February 23, 2012 – That Borderlands 2 trailer song

If you’re anything like me, you’ve watched that awesome Borderlands 2 trailer half a dozen times already, wishing you knew whose song was playing in the background. Well, good news: my amazing boyfriend gave me the answer! The artist is Nero and the song is called “Doomsday.” I mean, I know a lot of people are loving or hating on dubstep right now, but I’m really digging this song. And that title is pretty fitting for the trailer…

Gotham City Impostors Review: The Heroes Who Need An Introduction

A fear of clowns seems like an irrational fear to some people. But it makes total sense after witnessing the destruction and mayhem caused by Joker-wannabes in Gotham City Impostors. A simple premise makes up the background of the game – people of Gotham City have taken advantage of Batman’s absence (presumably while he’s in Arkham City) and have decided to band together as Joker imposters in order to commit consequence-free crime. Well, Batman wouldn’t let the Joker himself get away with it, so naturally, every Joker has his Batman – or a squad of rookie Batmen, in this case. Rising to the call of duty, these clumsy, self-proclaimed vigilantes have decided to band together and undo the terrible deeds that the arbitrary, irrational Jokerz have committed. This is where Gotham City Impostors is born.

Progress on The Last Guardian is “slow,” Sony not ready to talk about “timing of launch”

There has been a lot of talk about The Last GuardianGameStop saying it was cancelled and Fumito Ueda leaving Sony Japan are two of the biggest things. But in an interview with Wired, Shuhei Yoshida shed some light on what’s going on with the game.

Yoshida had a lot of good things to say about Ueda. “He’s on top of the game and coming into the office. He could be the person who’s in the office for the longest time. The difference is that he used to be a regular employee. But now we have a contract to define his role. It’s a very special contribution and role that he plays and we agreed, let’s make it more official, more special. That’s the only difference.”

In spite of the progress, it seems that things don’t have the same momentum they had before. “But the progress is slow and sometimes the team has to go back and review things. There’s a vision that we want to realize but it’s very very tough and technical issue that the team is tackling and some plans have to be made to evaluate and go through the process. At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it’s making progress, but still not to the level — it’s playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch.”

This is a bit discouraging, especially for those of us who definitely want to see the game released, like, next quarter (if not next week). That’s definitely not happening. And it sounds like “sometime in 2012” is no longer a sure thing either. However, my favorite part of the interview with Yoshida was this:

Wired: I’ve heard that people from Sony Santa Monica have gone to Japan to work in tandem, collaborate with the Japan team on this game.

Yoshida: Did you read it on the internet?

Ha! Burn. No, but Sony Santa Monica really is helping with the development of The Last Guardian.

Sony’s Game Design Chief, Shuhei Yoshida, talks UMD Passport, Vita security

Shuhei Yoshida, Game Design Chief at Sony, doesn’t seem to be afraid of Nintendo or the competition from the 3DS in this interview with Wired during the Dice Summit. Yoshida had a lot to say about the Vita, which launched today in the US.

We already knew UMD Passport wasn’t coming to the US, but Yoshia explains why: because the demand for UMD games, and games for the portable systems in general, is much higher in Japan, where the prices are also much higher.

“Lots of people who are interested in trying Vita are also interested in playing PSP games that they might purchase before Vita comes out, and will not necessarily choose the digital version,” Yoshida said. “When the games are already sold at a lower price in the U.S. we see less value in introducing that kind of system.”

And their fear of piracy running as rampant on the Vita as it did on the PSP? “There will always be the effort by those hackers. They are so smart, they’re sharp. But when you compare what happened with PSP to PS3, there are some hacking activities on PS3 but we’ve been doing much better. Our teams in Japan learned a lot and are applying that knowledge to fortifying PS Vita. So hopefully we will have much stronger protection on PS Vita.”

He also talked about the PlayStation Suite, which Sony is “definitely” looking to add sometime this year, to both the Vita and to Android devices.
