Next game from thatgamecompany teased on Twitter

thatgamecompany-logoAre you a fan of Flow, Flower, or Journey?

If so, you’re likely well aware that thatgamecompany is responsible for all three titles. But you might not know that the developer has been working on a followup to their minimalist quasi-trilogy since at least 2013.

At the time, Asher Vollmer, a former staff member at thatgamecompany and the creator of Threes, said their project “[is] going to change the industry in a really positive way.” Today, thatgamecompany delivered a small glimpse at their mysterious new project through Twitter.

Aside from a cryptic caption (“a game about giving”) and an image depicting one candle lighting another, we don’t know much about That Next Game, which will launch on multiple platforms as a multiplayer-focused game. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about it soon, and you can find the teasing tweet after the break.

Daily Scoop: November 1, 2016 – Humble Day of the Devs 2016 Bundle

One of these days, the Daily Scoop will actually be daily again! I was feeling under the weather yesterday and was lax on my responsibilities. But I did play some Pokemon Picross and caught up some more on some television, so that’s worth something, right?

Anyway, there are some great deals today, so let’s get right to them! There’s an amazing new Humble Bundle, and it’s called Day of the Devs 2016. Pay what you want for Lumino City, Broken Age, and Titan Souls. Beat the average for Massive Chalice, Oxenfree, and Grim Fandango Remastered. Finally, pay $9 or more for Day of the Tentacle Remastered and a Day of the Devs VIP ticket, which – if you’re not at the Day of the Devs event in San Francisco this Saturday – gets you 20% off at iam8bit.com. If you are at the event, the ticket lets you play games two hours before anyone else, skip the line, and get 20% off at the iam8bit pop-up shop.

Over at Steam, the Midweek Madness is Age of Wonders III, which is on sale for $7.49. The Daily Deal is To the Moon. Get the game alone for $1.49, the game with the soundtrack for $1.87, or the five-year anniversary bundle for $6.83.

Did you know Capcom has been posting a series of Resident Evil 7 mini-trailers?

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard‘s launch is just a few months away, but did you know that Capcom’s been posting short mini-trailers from the game for the last two weeks? Each video is less than a minute long, and all of them focus on a tiny sliver of the horror game’s world.

This cryptic vibe is definitely still present in “A Closer Look” and “Imagination,” a pair of new mini-trailers that were released today. And in case you missed any of the previous videos, all eight mini-trailers can be found after the break.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard will be released on January 24 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

4v1 horror game Last Year pops back into existence with a new trailer

Last Year is a 4v1 horror game that uses classic slasher tropes to pit a deranged Killer against four frightened teens. Originally announced in 2014, the game was quickly buried under legal troubles and the higher profile of Summer Camp/Friday the 13th: The Game (which was announced just a few days earlier). But developer Elastic Games has been quietly working on the project all this time, and they’ve just released a new trailer showcasing Predator Mode.

Like Jason Voorhees or Michael Meyers before him, the Killer in Last Year is able to sneak away from the action and reappear somewhere else in the blink of an eye. He’s able to do this thanks to Predator Mode, which allows the Killer to become invisible and move very fast throughout the environment. Then, when you least suspect it, he crashes through a skylight and decapitates a stereotypical teen. Ch Ch, Ch, Chhh! Ah, Ah, Ah, Ahhh!

Last Year is in development exclusively for the PC and will be released sometime in 2017.

It’s In Your Blood: A History of Horror Games (Part Five)

horrorhistory-header

The survival horror genre has traveled a long road since its infancy. What began with a frantic retreat from a pursuing dinosaur eventually gave way to ghosts, mutants, beasts, and countless hordes of zombies. Alas, the genre’s fiercest foes may have been those it relied on most: the developers overly reliant on sequels and spinoffs, and the gamers who would soon lose interest.

For those who’ve been following this series from the beginning, we’ve previously reached back to the birth of survival horror, charted its rise in popularity and a sudden onslaught of sequels, as well as its golden age. So now, join us for a look at survival horror’s last gasp in the spotlight… before it’s currently-ongoing resurrection, of course.

Google’s playable Halloween Doodle asks players to cast spells to bust ghosts

googledoodle-halloween2016

Oh no, Magic Cat Academy is under attack by a gaggle of ghosts! Quick, help Momo the Cat use her magic wand to expel the sinister spirits!

Magic Cat Academy is also the name of Google’s latest Doodle, and it’s a five-level spellcasting game where players draw symbols with their mouse to defeat an army of ghosts. Each level takes place in a different room at the titular school, and it’s up to Momo the Cat to save her friends.

The game start off easy enough, but players will have to perform some quick-thinking and do some heavy strategizing once they take on ghosts powered by multiple symbols.

Magic Cat Academy can currently be found on Google’s homepage, as well as at its permanent home in the Google Doodle Archive.
