Mutant Mudds Super Challenge Review: Dirty Deeds

mutantmuddssuperchallenge-header

When one hears the word “bully,” the archetypal image that usually comes to mind is that of a hulking brute. A dimwitted, slack-jawed, pit-stained-t-shirt-wearing oaf that couldn’t tell what a rhombus is, let alone be able to spell it. Not often do you hear of the nerdy kid with glasses being the jerk in the bunch. But I tell you this – I got my ass kicked by this bespectacled geek more times than I would by any bully. And these were brutal beatings, causing me great pain, uncompromising fury, and the occasional tear. Cruelly mocking me with every blow. Unrelenting. But you know what? I was totally cool with it.

Nintendo has sold more than 3.5 million copies of Super Mario Maker

supermariomaker-header

With the launch of the NX looming, it’s painfully obvious that the Wii U failed to hit the mark with the video game community. According to their most recent financial report, Nintendo has sold less than 13 million Wii U consoles, which is just a fraction of the install base owned by Sony’s PS4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. But that hasn’t stopped the consolemaker from creating compelling software that speaks to Wii U owners everywhere.

Just yesterday, Nintendo revealed that more than 25% of all Wii U owners have purchased Super Mario Maker, which translates to more than 3.5 million copies sold worldwide. These Mario fanatics have also managed to produce more than 7.2 million courses, and it would take the average person quite a long time to play them all:

Super Mario Maker’s 3.5 million copies puts it just outside the Wii U’s Top 5 behind Mario Kart 8, New Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo Land, Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. For Wii U, and Splatoon.

Homefront: The Revolution, Shadow of the Beast, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, more added to PlayStation Store

Unconventional warfare is the linchpin that holds many of the biggest titles in this week’s PlayStation Store update together.

First up is Sega’s Valkyria Chronicles Remastered, a PS4 re-release of the highly-acclaimed strategy RPG. Originally released for the PS3 in 2008, Valkyria Chronicles captured the hearts and minds of gamers everywhere with its blend of magical abilities and tactical modern warfare.

Speaking of modern warfare, Deep Silver’s Homefront: The Revolution is also now available to download for the PS4. In this sequel, history repeats as the North Korean invasion of the US continues, and players are forced to fight for their independence on the streets of Philadelphia. History also repeats in Shadow of the Beast, a PS4 remake of the popular side-scroller originally released for the Amiga.

Finally this week, NIS America’s Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice makes its PlayStation Store debut more than eight after the game was originally released for the PS3. If you’ve been waiting all this time to pick it up, now you don’t even have to leave your couch.

More information on all of these titles (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. And don’t forget, the PlayStation Blog recently published a complete rundown of this week’s new add-ons and discounts.

Batman: Return to Arkham will bring the first two games to PS4, Xbox One this July

It’s almost fitting that WB Games’s big Batman: Return to Arkham announcement was spoiled by a series of leaks… the Batcave is often less secure than a child’s piggy bank.

The Dark Knight will indeed return this July in a two-game compilation that’ll bring Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City to the PS4 and Xbox One for the first time. The package is priced at $49.99, and it’ll include all previously-released downloadable content for both games. Virtuos will handle the PS4 and Xbox One upgrade, which will include enhanced and updated character models, environments, lighting, effects, and shaders.

Batman: Return to Arkham will be available in stores on July 26.

Is id Software teasing Quake 5? Developer is telling prospective employees they’ll get to work on “franchises like Doom and Quake”

idsoftwarelogoAfter nearly a decade in development, Doom is now available on store shelves and nostalgic FPS fans are loving its mixture of modern design and retro sensibilities. So the developers at id Software are probably feeling pretty good about themselves. But that hasn’t stopped the company from going on a hiring spree.

More than a dozen job openings at id Software were recently added to Bethesda’s Careers page, and once again, they’re offering prospective employees the chance to work on “legendary game properties like DOOM and QUAKE.” Obviously, this isn’t a guarantee that Quake 5 is in the works at id, but the last time the developer went on a similar headhunting operation was in 2013, about a year before they debuted Doom to a packed house at QuakeCon 2014.

Of course, this is probably just the regular employment churn that occurs at all companies, combined with an HR department too lazy to write up a new job description. But after the amazing return of Doom (and Wolfenstein before it), I am ready for more Quake too.
