Insert Quarter: Is Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel’s Season Pass a Good Value or a Rip-Off?

insertquarter-header

Insert Quarter is our showcase for some of the best and most interesting writing about video games on the Internet.

Gearbox supported 2012’s Borderlands 2 with a bevy of downloadable content including four campaign expansions (which were included as part of the game’s Season Pass), five Headhunter Packs, two level cap upgrades, and two additional playable characters. It was the most ambitious post-release DLC schedule for a game ever.

Perhaps it’s due to the developer switch or maybe it’s because the latest Borderlands game is still living on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in a new-generation world, but Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel‘s DLC schedule isn’t nearly as expansive. 2K Games is once again selling a Season Pass for The Pre-Sequel, but Destructoid’s Darren Nakamura is concerned that 2K is being intentionally vague in their promotion of the Pass to hide its less-than-stellar value:

So even though no promises are technically being broken, and 2K plans to deliver four digital additions to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel for the price of three through the season pass, I cannot blame any who bought it for feeling cheated. The content fits the requirements laid out, but the value is not there. Even if the plans were to change from here onward and the season pass ends up including one new Vault Hunter and three story DLCs, the value of the pass over purchasing content piecemeal hinges on the quality of all three packs, and the series does not have a perfect track record on that front.

Handsome Jack will join Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel as fifth playable character

borderlandspresequel-handsomejack

Admit it, ever since Borderlands 2 came out, you’ve wanted to play as Handsome Jack. Well, you’ll get your chance (sort of) in the “Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack,” the first downloadable content pack for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Available on November 11, players will be able to take control of Jack’s Doppelganger, who is able to summon multiple Jack clones to aid him in battle:

As “Jack,” you’ll be able to summon multiple Digi-Jacks, which will join you in battle to mow down enemies and earn you more sweet, sweet loot. Depending on how you spec out your Skill Trees, these Digi-Jacks can earn you bonuses or even get you a Second Wind in Fight For Your Life. “Jack” can also shoot enemies with wrist lasers, get buffs every time he picks up money (in typical CEO fashion), or even get upgrades for using guns made by specific manufacturers.

The Handsome Jack Doppelganger Pack will be the first piece of content available through the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Season Pass (which is available for $29.99) and can also be purchased separately for $9.99 on the PC, PS3, or Xbox 360.

Here’s a complete timeline of everything that’s happened in the Borderlands franchise so far

borderlandsthepresequel-header

Some franchises produce a tangled timeline due to a gaggle of sequels, prequels, and side stories mingling with time travel, alternate realities, and cross-dimensional rifts.

Through three games, the storyline in Gearbox’s Borderlands franchise doesn’t do this. But the developer still felt the need to create an official timeline to map the major events of Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (which takes place between the first two games but is presented as a flashback from after Borderlands 2). With the official timeline in place, everyone will be on the same page ahead of the release of Tales From the Borderlands, which should launch before the end of the year.

You can find the timeline after the break, but beware, it contains quite a few spoilers from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. (more…)

Gearbox’s “Customer Appreciation” Debacle: A Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Non-Review

borderlandsthepresequel-header

This is where my review of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel would be, if I had received the game on time. I received a free code for the game – a “Certificate of Appreciation” – from Gearbox when I went to their panel at PAX East. PAX Prime attendees of their panel also got Certificates. But many people who received these Certificates are just now getting game codes – or still waiting for them – three days after the game was released. (more…)

Borderlands: Pre-Sequel, Minecraft PS Vita, Evil Within, and a lot more added to PS Store

minecraft-header

It’s another big week for the PlayStation Store as more than a dozen new titles are now available to download on the PS4, PS3, and Vita.

Leading things off is Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (PS3), 2K’s tale of what happened between the first and second games in the series. With a new location (Pandora’s Moon) and a new developer (2K Australia), it might just make your PS4 feel a bit lonely for the next few weeks.

But speaking of the PS4, it is now home to plenty of scares and a little bit of whimsy. The scares are provided by the haunted mansion of Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within (also available on the PS3) and the roving zombies of Telltale’s The Walking Dead. Come to think of it, the deadly Triad gangsters of United Front’s Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition are pretty scary too. To balance out all this blood and gore, you might like to know that PopCap’s adorable puzzle game, Peggle 2, was released for the PS4 this week as well.

Vita owners might like to know that Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition is finally available to download. Not only does the portable version of Mojang’s world-crafter include everything from the PlayStation 3 Edition, but it’s also a free download if you own it on the PS3.

Finally this week, if you love Duck Dynasty so much that you want to play a quickie tie-in game (also titled Duck Dynasty) on your PS3 or PS4, then Activision’s got you covered.

A complete list of this week’s new releases (including a few more that went unmentioned above) can be found after the break. And a full rundown of this week’s new game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

New Releases: Borderlands: Pre-Sequel, The Evil Within, PlayStation TV, More

newreleases101414

While most of this Fall’s new releases are centered around showcasing the power of the PS4 and Xbox One, let’s not forget that previous-generation consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360 are also in line for a few new games. (Meanwhile, the Wii U sits in the corner, doing its own thing, content in its existence.) And PS3/Xbox 360 owners should take note that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, perhaps the biggest PS3/Xbox 360 release of the Fall, will be available in stores this week. The third Borderlands game, which actually takes place between the first two titles in the series, will also be released for the PC.

Bethesda’s The Evil Within is not a previous-generation exclusive, but it will be release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in addition to the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The Evil Within is Shinji Mikami’s return to horror and will likely be full of pants-wetting terror regardless of what platform you play it on.

The rest of this week’s new releases are a grab bag of games that run the gamut from a new Pac-Man game (Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2 on the 3DS, PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360) to a Duck Dynasty tie-in (Duck Dynasty on the 3DS, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One) to a passel of re-releases on new platforms (Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One; The Walking Dead on the PS4 and Xbox One; and The Walking Dead Season 2 on the PS3 and Xbox 360).

Finally, speaking of systems proclaiming their existence, Sony’s PlayStation TV set-top box, which plays Vita games and streams PlayStation Now content and local PS4 games, will be released this week.

A complete list of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

2K announces add-on content and Season Pass for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

borderlandspresequel-seasonapssHey! Guess what! 2K Games, Gearbox, and 2K Australia will follow the release of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel with four add-on content packs. And… and… you’ll be able to pre-purchase a Season Pass to get a 25% discount on all four DLC packs.

Announced over the week at the PAX Prime convention, the four content packs will add “new characters, challenges, missions, and experiences” to the Pre-Sequel. Obviously, the make-up of each pack has yet to be formalized, but we do know that they’ll be priced at $9.99 apiece while the Season Pass has been set at $29.99.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (and the Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Season Pass) will be available for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on October 14.
