Celeste, God of War, Spider-Man, Red Dead 2, Smash Ultimate will compete for “Video Game of the Year” at 2019 SXSW Gaming Awards
The SXSW Gaming Advisory Board has sifted through all of 2018’s biggest games and announced the nominees for this year’s SXSW Gaming Awards.
As you might have expected, Sony Santa Monica’s God of War, Insomniac’s Spider-Man, and Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 claimed the most nominations. Each of the three games will compete in a total of nine categories, and all three are in the running for “Video Game of the Year.” Matt Thorson’s brutal platformer, Celeste, and Nintendo’s crossover fighter, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, were also nominated for the big prize.
The public will get the chance to vote for the winners in all categories at this year’s SXSW Gaming Awards, and the final winner in each category will be determined by a weighted total between public and advisory board votes. Voting is open now at SXSW Gaming’s official website, and will close on Sunday, February 17 at midnight (Eastern Time).
The SXSW Gaming Awards will be given out on March 16 and you can find the full list of nominees in all categories after the break. (more…)

Sony Santa Monica’s God of War wins “Game of the Year” at 2018 Game Awards
In what is surely to be the first of many accolades, Sony Santa Monica’s God of War won “Game of the Year” at the 2018 Game Awards. Kratos’s latest adventure also picked up statuettes for “Best Game Direction” and “Best Action/Adventure Game.”
But the biggest winner of the night was Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2, which picked up four wins last night. The publisher’s “Cowboy Game” collected some shiny hardware for “Best Narrative,” “Best Score/Music,” “Best Audio Design,” and “Best Performance” (for Roger Clark’s work as Arthur Morgan).
The all-mighty Fortnite picked up two awards, “Best Ongoing Game” and “Best Multiplayer,” but the most surprising news of the night might be that Insomniac’s Spider-Man was completely shut out. Best of luck next time to the ol’ webhead.

Multiple nominations for Red Dead Redemption 2, Spider-Man, and God of War will make this year’s Game Awards an EPIC event
It’s been a big year for super-sized games like Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 and Sony Santa Monica’s God of War, and it looks like they’ll be front and center (alongside a few other epic titles) at this year’s Game Awards show on December 6.
Rockstar’s western and Sony’s Norse fable tied for the most nominations (eight apiece), and they’ll both be competing for “Game of the Year” against Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, Insomniac’s Spider-Man, Capcom’s Monster Hunter: World, and Matt Thorson’s Celeste.
This year, fans will be able to make their voices heard in the balloting by joining the official The Game Awards Discord server, and voting for their favorites in all categories. Voting through the Discord server is now open and will be available through December 5.
The Game Awards will kick off at 9:00 PM (Eastern Time) on December 6, and fans can watch the show through their favorite video streaming service or at TheGameAwards.com. As usual, we can also expect to see “exclusive game world premieres” and “new game announcements.”

New Retail Releases: Fallout 76, Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu, Hitman 2, More
Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong, thanks to this week’s brand new retail game releases…
Fallout fans will be able to return to The Wasteland in an entirely new way this week as Bethesda will add multiplayer gameplay to the franchise for the first time in Fallout 76 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Xbox One owners interested in upgrading to an Xbox One X will also be able to opt for an Xbox One X 1TB + Fallout 76 Bundle.
Pokemon fans will be able to experience a familiar locale in a new way this week as well with Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee! and Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu! for the Switch. The two games will revisit the Kanto region, and players will need to use a throwing motion with a Joy-Con (or the optional Poke Ball Plus controller) to catch Pokemon in the wild. Two special console bundles (a Switch + Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee! + Poke Ball Plus Bundle and a Switch + Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu! + Poke Ball Plus Bundle) will also be available.
More familiar settings can be found this week in Activision’s Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which collects the first three games in the series on the PS4 and Xbox One. It’ll be joined on store shelves by a pair of new-to-the-Switch games, including SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, a compilation of SNK’s pre-NeoGeo offerings, and the console debut of 2K’s Civilization VI.
New adventures (and targets) await Agent 47 this week as developer IO Interactive has ditched the episodic structure for the assassin’s newest game, Hitman 2, which will launch for the PS4 and Xbox One (and on the PC as a download-only title).
The Golf Club 2019 Featuring PGA Tour (PS4, Xbox One), a golf simulation from HB Studios, and Trailblazers (PS4, Switch), a futuristic racer from Supergonk, will make their way to retail shelves everywhere after first appearing as digital titles earlier this year. And Epic’s Fortnite: Deep Freeze Bundle will give fans the chance to obtain the Deep Freeze Costume Set and 1,000 V-Bucks for the free-to-play Battle Royale shooter.
Finally this week, DICE and Electronic Arts will deliver Battlefield V: Deluxe Edition to the franchise’s on the PS4 and Xbox One a few days ahead of the launch of the Standard Edition.

Fortnite will add NFL-themed Outfits on November 9
Are you ready for some Football Royale? Epic Games and the NFL have announced that NFL-themed Outfits will be available to download in Fortnite beginning this Thursday, November 9, at 7:00 PM.
According to an update on Epic’s official website, jerseys will be available for all 32 NFL teams, plus an additional Fortnite-styled jersey:
Each Outfit can be swapped to any of the thirty-two NFL teams, plus an additional unique Fortnite team. You’ll also be able to choose any number from 1-99 to place on your jersey to complete the official NFL look.

Epic delays free-to-play version of Fortnite: Save the World into 2019
Fortnite was a very different game when it was first released in July 2017. Originally, the game was developed as a team-based shooter where players would battle zombies and rescue survivors (not unlike Left 4 Dead) while also crafting and building weapons and defensive fortifications.
That all changed when Epic Games launch the Fortnite: Battle Royale expansion. Very quickly, the 100-player free-for-all was all anyone was talking about, and the main game (which was retroactively retitled as Fortnite: Save the World) was moved to the back burner.
But Epic always planned to offer a free-to-play version of Fortnite’s Save the World mode, and it was expected to launch before the end of this year. However, the developer has now confirmed (via their official website) that it won’t be available sometime in 2019:
We decided to move the free-to-play launch of Save the World out of this year. We’re working on a broad set of features, reworks, and backend system scaling we believe are needed to go free-to-play. Save the World has grown consistently since our launch in July 2017 and Fortnite overall has experienced unprecedented growth. Scaling up for the legions of player heroes who will be joining the fight is key to providing an excellent experience. This applies to all of our players, old and new, so we’re taking the time to get this right.
To make amends for this delay, Epic also announced that players will be able to pick up Fortnite: Save the World for 50% off beginning this week when they buy one of the game’s four Founder’s Packs.
New Retail Releases: Mega Man 11, Super Mario Party, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, More
The Blue Bomber has been sleeping for the better part of a decade, but Capcom’s venerable mascot will finally return in a new platforming adventure this week for the PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. Mega Man 11 was developed internally at Capcom, and it features a brand new art style, eight never-before-seen Robot Masters, and a handful of new gameplay mechanics that should keep “Mega Fans” on their toes. In addition to its retail launch, Mega Man 11 will also be available to download for the PC.
Several other major franchises will also be making a return this week, and that includes Super Mario Party, the latest addition to Nintendo’s madcap multiplayer series. This time around, Switch owners get to try out Board Game Mode when battling friends, as well as tackle new minigames in Mariothon and Online Mariothon.
If you’re not a Switch owner yet (or you’re thinking of investing in a second Switch console), Nintendo has teamed up with Epic Games to produce the Switch + Fortnite “Double Helix” Console Bundle. The package includes a Switch console with Neon Blue and Red Joy-Con controllers, as well as 1,000 V-Bucks, and the Double Helix Costume Set.
But if you’d rather trade Tilted Towers for the Parthenon, PS4 and Xbox One owners will be able to explore Ancient Greece in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. According to Ubisoft, players will be able to “journey from outcast to legendary Spartan hero” in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, which will also be available to download for the PC.
We can race back into the present with Forza Horizon 4, a new arcade-style racer for the Xbox One from Microsoft and Playground Games. A PC download through the Windows Store (which is compatible with Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere service) will also be available.
And finally this week, 2K Games will release the WWE 2K19: Deluxe Edition for the PS4 and Xbox One. This feature-packed version of the game will be available on October 5, four days before the Standard Edition, and include two bonus playable wrestlers (Rey Mysterio and Ronda Rousey), the Season Pass, and all digital content from the Wooooo! Edition.

Epic Games will add “robust competition system” to Fortnite this Fall
Epic Games hand-delivered the “August 2018” development update for Fortnite earlier today on their official website. The communique from the development team includes new information about weapon balancing and building effectiveness, as well as the first statement about the battle royale’s recent launch on Android platforms.
But the real meat of this announcement can be found under the Competitive heading, which is where Epic announced that a “robust competition system” is coming to the game this Fall:
We are aware of a strong desire from competitive players for more opportunities to compete directly against one another within the same match. Development recently began for a robust competition system which will allow for all players to compete with one another and be recognized for their accomplishments. The first version of this feature is expected later this Fall.
Ideally, this new scoring system will help Fortnite transition into the full-fledged esport that Epic hopes it’ll be.
In addition to the new competition system, the developer also confirmed that “the ability to completely remap your gamepad to exactly your preference” will also be added to Fortnite this Fall.
