New Retail Releases: Rage 2, A Plague Tale, More

It’s time once again for a look at this week’s new retail releases.

Bethesda and id Software, along with an assist from Avalanche Studios, are bringing back the Rage universe this week with the release of Rage 2 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Rage 2 retains the original game’s Mad Max-inspired Wasteland, but adds in a dash of over-the-top zaniness and and a colorful new graphical palette.

Also set to launch this week is A Plague Tale: Innocence, a harrowing look back at the plague-ravaged French countryside of 1349. Taking control of a young woman who must protect a brother she barely knows, players will need to avoid the Inquisition and an army of deadly rats. A Plague Tale: Innocence will be available on retail shelves for the PS4 and Xbox One, while PC players will be able to download it through their favorite digital storefront.

Finally this week, Sniper Elite V2 Remastered gives fans of the franchise a chance to relive the second entry’s World War II setting. This Remastered version of the game (for the PS4, Switch, and Xbox One) will include updated graphics, new playable characters from Rebellion’s Zombie Army Trilogy, and all previously-released downloadable content. Sniper Elite V2 Remastered will be available as a digital download on the PC.

You can find the rest of this week’s retail releases after the break. (more…)

Bethesda will take fans on a “deeper dive” into Doom Eternal and Fallout 76 at QuakeCon 2018

Bethesda has announced that we’ll learn a lot more about Doom Eternal and Fallout 76 at QuakeCon 2018. (This is my shocked face.)

While there was never much doubt that QuakeCon attendees (and those of us watching at home through Twitch) would get an updated look at two of Bethesda’s biggest upcoming titles, the publisher put out an official schedule of events for the convention earlier today:

Keynote Address, Featuring the Reveal of Doom Eternal
Friday, August 10th @ 11:00 AM (Central Time)

QuakeCon’s Keynote Address returns, with updates planned for Quake Champions, Rage 2, The Elder Scrolls Online, and, of course, the savage gameplay reveal of Doom Eternal with Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin from id Software.

Fallout 76 Panel and Fan Q&A
Saturday, August 11 @ 11:00 AM (Central Time)

Todd Howard and others from Bethesda Game Studios will take fans through a deeper dive into the character system and Perks coming in Fallout 76, followed by a Q&A with the team to address fans’ most pressing questions.

Additional panels and esports events promoting Rage 2, Quake Champions, The Elder Scrolls: Legends, and Prey are also in the works, and they’ll be added to the schedule soon:

Panels
This year’s QuakeCon will see the return of official and community-run panels, including inside looks and discussions with Bethesda developers about games like Doom Eternal, Rage 2, Quake Champions, and Prey. The panel schedule and details will be revealed alongside the full list of activities prior to QuakeCon.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends Masters Series
Thursday, August 9 – Friday, August 10

The Elder Scrolls: Legends Masters Series qualifiers are underway and set to culminate with two days of competition and finals at QuakeCon. Sixteen of the best Legends players in the world will convene at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center to battle for their share of a $50,000 prize pool.

Quake Champions QuakeCon Open
Friday, August 10 – Sunday, August 12

The next Major event for Quake Champions will take place at QuakeCon 2018. The QuakeCon Open will bring some of the best esports players in the world to battle it out in 2v2 for their share of a $175,000 prize pool. And, as a bonus – players from the top eight 2v2 teams will move on to compete solo in a 1v1, winner-take-all Duel showdown for a shot at ultimate glory and $25,000.

QuakeCon 2018 will kick off on August 9th at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas. Tickets are now available at QuakeCon.org.

Bethesda reveals first Gameplay Trailer for Rage 2 and confirms Spring 2019 launch date

As promised, Bethesda has pulled back the curtain on the first Gameplay Trailer for Rage 2. Bringing players back to the wild wasteland of the first game, Bethesda also confirmed that Rage 2 will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One in Spring 2019.

In addition, the publisher unveiled a bevy of gameplay and story details in a new post on Bethesda.net (and slipped in a few Walker: Texas Ranger jokes):

Mankind is in peril. In the decades following an asteroid’s devastation, most of the earth has become an unforgiving wildland where bloodthirsty factions vie for control of precious resources. Pockets of civilization have emerged to claim their space in the world, but the tentative peace they’ve established is being threatened. Rage 2 follows Walker, the last Ranger of Vineland, as he fights to survive the chaos of the dystopian world into which he was born. With a wide array of weapons, vehicles and strange powers, Walker sets off to take down the tyrannical Authority.

It’s the perfect mix: id Software’s first-person shooter pedigree, Avalanche Studios’ mastery of the open world sandbox, with a healthy dose of pedal-to-the-metal vehicle combat. From the swamplands and jungles where enemies lurk among the dense foliage, to the open deserts where a passing car is more likely to mow you down than offer you a ride, the world of Rage 2 is not a gentle, nurturing place. The people who have survived in this landscape have had to learn to protect themselves and keep their heads on a swivel, especially with the reemergence of a familiar menace.

Players will have other opportunities for mayhem in Rage 2’s open world by equipping special Nanotrite abilities:

Among the arrows he can choose from his Nanotrite ability quiver are the power to crush enemies into paste from above in a devastating slam attack or send them flying away from him with a lethal energy push. Walker will also learn to channel these Nanotrites into his weapons, pushing them into an awe-inspiring Overdrive, a unique skill that lets him push his guns beyond their limits and unleash absolute hell on his foes. Chain these abilities together to make Walker a powerhouse of destruction, quickly refilling his Overdrive meter. While in Overdrive, Walker’s guns do more damage, they gain new attributes, enemies drop better rewards and Walker’s health starts to regenerate. When timed correctly, Overdrive is more than enough to tip the scales in a tricky fight.

If you’re still hungry for more information about Rage 2, you’ll have to wait until this year’s E3 Expo to really dig in. Bethesda has said they’ll reveal a second Gameplay Trailer and even more details about Rage 2 during their BE3 Showcase on Sunday, June 10.

Bethesda officially announces Rage 2

After a spate of rumors pointed to an impending announcement for Rage 2, Bethesda has thrown up their hands and officially announced that the game is in development at id Software for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A short Teaser Trailer has been embedded above, and a longer Gameplay Trailer will be unveiled tomorrow. If the Teaser Trailer is any indication, the next Rage will be considerably sillier than its predecessor.

Rage ended on a huge cliffhanger, and while it wasn’t as well-loved as Doom or Quake, fans have been hoping that the developer would return to the game’s post-apocalyptic world in a sequel. Bethesda has also recruited Avalanche Studios, the team responsible for 2015’s Mad Max game, to assist in the creation of Rage 2.

The announcement of Rage 2 also ups the possibility that the rest of the games included in the recent Walmart Canada leak (as reported by Polygon) are real. So don’t be surprised when game publishers start announcing Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 6, Lego DC Supervillains, Gears of War 5, Assassin’s Creed 2018, and Just Cause 4 over the next few weeks.

A release date for Rage 2 has yet to be announced.
