Square Enix officially unveils Shadow of the Tomb Raider in a new trailer

As promised, Square Enix has unveiled our first look at Shadow of the Tomb Raider in a brand new trailer. Dubbed “The End of the Beginning,” it looks like players will close out this chapter of Lara Croft’s life as she takes her rightful place in the world as the “Tomb Raider”:

Experience Lara Croft’s defining moment as she becomes the Tomb Raider. In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Lara must master a deadly jungle, overcome terrifying tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour. As she races to save the world from a Maya apocalypse, Lara will ultimately be forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be.

Key Features

  • Survive and Thrive In the Deadliest Place on Earth: Master an unforgiving jungle setting in order to survive. Explore underwater environments filled with crevasses and deep tunnel systems.
  • Become One With the Jungle: Outgunned and outnumbered, Lara must use the jungle to her advantage. Strike suddenly and disappear like a jaguar, use mud as camouflage, and instill fear in enemies to sow chaos.
  • Discover Dark and Brutal Tombs: Tombs are more terrifying than ever before, requiring advanced traversal techniques to reach them, and once inside they are filled with deadly puzzles.
  • Uncover Living History: Discover a hidden city and explore the biggest hub space ever found in a Tomb Raider game.

While today’s trailer lays out the main story of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, fans will get their first look at a Gameplay Trailer during this year’s E3 Expo in June.

Square Enix also announced that Camilla Luddington will once again portray Lara Croft in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, reprising her role from Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider. And she’ll continue to tell Lara’s story beyond the release of the game, as the publisher is planning to launch seven downloadable add-ons to Shadow of the Tomb Raider in the months that follow.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is currently in development at Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. And it’ll be released on September 14.

Square Enix will launch Shadow of the Tomb Raider for the PC, PS4, Xbox One on Sept. 14

As expected, Square Enix has announced that Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on September 14. A short teaser trailer, embedded above, also gave us our first look at Lara’s next destination… the Mayan Pyramids of Central America.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is being jointly developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal, and according to its official website, we’ll learn more about the game during a “Reveal Event” on April 27. Fans can also expect some kind of puzzle-based contest (with a developer meet-and-greet as a prize) to begin this Monday, March 19.

And don’t forget, the newest Tomb Raider movie, starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, opens in theaters today.

Square Enix is counting down to a reveal of Shadow of the Tomb Raider on March 15

Back in December, Square Enix announced that a new game in the Tomb Raider franchise was in development at Crystal Dynamics, and a promise that we’d learn more about it this year. Today, they’ve updated the game’s official website with a countdown that’s set to expire on Thursday, March 15, at 9:00 AM (Eastern Time).

However, that’s not all Square Enix did. Digging in to the site’s source code, you can find the game’s final title (Shadow of the Tomb Raider), an announcement date for “pre-order incentives” (April 27, 2018), a tagline (“Shadow of The Tomb Raider is the climatic finale of Lara’s origin story.”), and the release date (September 14, 2018).

Whoops doesn’t seem to cover it… but we’ll probably get a nice trailer once the countdown clock reaches zero tomorrow.

Square Enix officially confirms that a new Tomb Raider game is in development

Last Summer, Crystal Dynamics hired Ian Milham as their Franchise Director for Tomb Raider, effectively confirming that a third game in the rebooted adventures of Lara Croft was in the works.

Today, Square Enix officially announced the game with a short tweet, and said we’ll hear more about it during a major 2018 event:

Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to learn more about the next Tomb Raider game, but eagle-eyed readers might have already spotted something neat about this message. If you take the first letter from each sentence, they spell out the word “Shadow.” And wouldn’t you know it, rumor has it the next Tomb Raider game will be known as Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Of course, there’s also the possibility that someone in Square Enix’s PR department is just messing with us and the game will be titled something else entirely.

Lara Croft Will Return… Art Director for Dead Space joins Crystal Dynamics as Game Director of Tomb Raider franchise

Ian Milham, who is probably best known to gamers as the Art Director of the Dead Space franchise, will be joining Crystal Dyamics as the new Game Director of the Tomb Raider franchise. He’ll replace Brian Horton, who left Crystal Dynamics for the neighboring offices of Infinity Ward back in January.

“Ian is one of those rare veterans who combines creativity, artistry, and passion into excellence on-screen. It’s a matching type of DNA that Crystal Dynamics has forged itself upon over these last few years,” said Scot Amos, the Co-Head of Crystal Dynamics. “We’re very excited to welcome Ian as the newest top-tier talent joining our studio. His attitude, aptitude, and aspirations for crafting great game experiences are perfectly aligned with who and what Crystal Dynamics is all about.”

Lara Croft probably won’t battle an oozing space monster anytime soon, but Milham isn’t just known for Dead Space’s deranged and distinctive designs. Immediately prior to his employment at Crystal Dynamics, the developer also served as the Creative Director on Battlefield Hardline.

“Adventure games have always been my first love,” said Milham. “When the opportunity came to join Crystal Dynamics, I had to jump on it. This is the home of Lara Croft, who is a legend in action-adventure gaming and a pillar of the industry. I’ve admired Crystal’s work for a while now, as they continue to deliver top notch narrative and spectacle, coupled with deep systems and player choice. I’m very excited about where the studio is headed and I’m eager to be a part of it.”

While Square Enix didn’t officially announce a third game in the rebooted adventures of Lara Croft today, they may as well have. The recruitment of a new Game Director means the publisher has likely given the green light to yet another entry in the franchise, but it’ll probably be quite some time before we hear anything about it.
