PlayStation Plus subscribers to receive “Instant Game Collection”

Between all the free games and the ridiculously awesome sales, PlayStation Plus has always been a better subscription service than Microsoft’s Xbox Live Gold. But with its latest gambit, Sony is going for the throat.

Announced last night during their E3 2012 Press Conference, starting today, PlayStation Plus will receive an “Instant Game Collection” of 12 PS3 titles. And these aren’t the dregs of the PlayStation Store either. This is good quality, amazing stuff.

Just take a look at the list of free games you’ll receive as long as you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber:

  • Choplifter HD
  • InFamous 2
  • Hard Corp: Uprising
  • Just Cause 2
  • Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
  • Little Big Planet 2
  • Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One
  • Saints Row 2
  • Sideway: New York
  • Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown
  • Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Never Die Alone

Downloading all of these games individually from the PlayStation Store would cost over $260. So purchasing a PlayStation Plus subscription for $49.99 per year is a much better option. Especially when you add in all the other monthly bonuses a Plus subscription includes.

Your move Microsoft.

Madden NFL 12 blitzes the September NPD list

Boom! After taking the month of August off thanks to the NFL lockout, the debut of Madden NFL 12 has reclaimed its rightful spot at the top of The NPD Groups’s monthly rankings.

The football sim was joined at the top of the charts by other big new releases: Gears of War 3 chainsawed the second spot and Deep Silver’s Dead Island landed at #3 (behold the power of hype, folks). EA Sports claimed the rest of the top five with FIFA Soccer 12 at #4 and NHL 12 a spot below. Resistance 3 at #7 and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine at #10 round out the bevy of new releases on this NPD list.

Holdovers from previous months include Deus Ex: Human Revolution (#6), Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (#8) and Call of Duty: Black Ops (#9).

The complete top ten can be found after the break. (more…)

No surprises in THQ’s E3 lineup

After a flurry of announcements this week, THQ has finally unveiled their complete E3 lineup. Aside from the new stuff like Metro: Last Light, WWE ’12 and UFC Undisputed 3, this is the same lineup of games THQ talked about last year.

Sadly, there appears to be no mention of the publisher’s more distant projects like Darksiders II, Devil’s Third, Guillermo Del Toro’s Insane and the Turtle Rock-developed first person shooter.

You can check out THQ’s complete lineup after the break. (more…)

THQ renews Warhammer 40,000 license

THQ and Games Workshop have announced today that they are renewing THQ’s exclusive license to prepare video game adaptations of the popular Warhammer 40,000 tabletop war game.

The publisher has two Warhammer 40,000 games in development: PC/360/PS3 third person shooter Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and MMORPG Warhammer 40,000: Dark Milennium Online. THQ President and Ceo Brian Farrell expressed his enthusiasm for both games, still scheduled to launch this year, saying, “our envisioning of the Warhammer 40,000 universe will continue to grow with top quality games across all platforms, including the upcoming launches of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online.”

The last big game to come out of this license, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, was a notable success among PC gamers, breathing a little extra life into the Real Time Strategy genre.

In other tabletop news, anyone wanna get in on a D&D campaign?
