NCAA Football 12 is the valedictorian of July’s NPD chart

The NPD Group has revealed the top ten bestselling games for the month of July and NCAA Football 12 jumped to the head of the class. None of the rest of the month’s new releases managed to crack the list (including the awesome Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon or the alluring Catherine). Even the heavily-hyped Duke Nukem Forever was unable to maintain its place in the top ten.

With few new releases, only 17 titles were released during the month, gamers spent their money on other things in July. According to The NPD Group’s Anita Frazier, July was the “lowest month [for game sales] since October 2006.”

Maybe that’ll show publishers that the gaming community is pretty desperate for new games in the Summer. So maybe they shouldn’t backload every worthwhile game into the September-November period. In the meantime, check out the full top ten after the break. (more…)

Kareem, Dr. J say “I am the greatest” in NBA 2K12’s NBA’s Greatest mode

What do you do for an encore after you add His Airness to NBA 2K11? You throw the ball back onto the court and see who else wants to play.

2K Sports plans to make NBA 2K12 legendary with the new NBA’s Greatest mode. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and ten more basketball legends will relive their greatest game and then match up against current NBA stars like Lebron James and Dirk Nowitski.

“One of the things we’re really proud of as a franchise is that we’ve transcended video games and have become part of the talk about basketball and the NBA,” says Jason Argent, 2K’s Vice President of Marketing. “So we’re going to leverage that with NBA 2K12 as every person who loves to debate sports, every person in every barber shop and bar and everywhere else always wonders: What would happen if today’s Lakers played one of the Jordan teams?”

With ten spots remaining, I hope there’s room for The Round Mound of Rebound, Sir Charles Barkley himself!

First Duke Nukem Forever map pack announced

It may not have lived up to expectations (or perhaps it gave you EXACTLY what you expected), but 2K Games has announced the first DLC add-on pack for Duke Nukem Forever.

Duke will return to the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this Fall in the “Hail to the Icons Parody Pack.” The pack will include three new modes and four new multiplayer maps. It’ll also be a free download for Duke Nukem First Access Club members. A price point for the rest of us mere mortals wasn’t revealed.

So just what will the “Hail to the Icons Parody Pack” contain? Hit the jump to find out. (more…)

Jordan, Bird, Magic triple-team NBA 2K12 cover

Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. 2K Sports has chosen those three legends to grace the three different covers that’ll be available for NBA 2K12. The basketball sim will be available for the PC, PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360 on October 4.

After the huge success of last year’s Jordan-infused NBA 2K11, expanding the game’s repertoire of hoops legends is a great idea. The looming NBA lockout probably influenced 2K’s decision to stay away from active players as well.

However, I wouldn’t get too attached to the artwork of His Airness. If you look close you’ll see that, instead of his familiar “23” (or even his short-lived “45”), the number on Jordan’s jersey is a “3.” (A second look reveals that the “2” in “23” is there, just pushed all the way to the left.)

Whoops! Hit the (fast) break for a look at all three covers. (more…)

Bodycount tags August 30 release date

Codemasters has announced an August 30th release date for Bodycount, the wild new first person shooter from the creators of Black. In Bodycount, players will be tasked with tracking down the mysterious “Target,” a terrorist mastermind that makes other terrorist masterminds look downright cuddly.

However, cuddly is not the word I would use to describe the game’s seemingly neverending arsenal of killing implements:

Equipped with a mouth-watering arsenal of weapons, grenades, mines and airstrikes players rip through cover and enemies as they leave no man standing. By performing skill kills, chaining kills and collecting intel dropped by downed enemies, players can unlock a series of upgrades and abilities, including an adrenaline shot, explosive bullets and radar. Every bullet and every body counts, with replayability extended by the scoring of a player’s skill in each level which can be compared against online leaderboards in the game’s Bodycount Mode.

Bodycount will also include online co-op and competitive modes when it’s released in August for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

No surprises in THQ’s E3 lineup

After a flurry of announcements this week, THQ has finally unveiled their complete E3 lineup. Aside from the new stuff like Metro: Last Light, WWE ’12 and UFC Undisputed 3, this is the same lineup of games THQ talked about last year.

Sadly, there appears to be no mention of the publisher’s more distant projects like Darksiders II, Devil’s Third, Guillermo Del Toro’s Insane and the Turtle Rock-developed first person shooter.

You can check out THQ’s complete lineup after the break. (more…)

Come get the Duke Nukem Forever launch trailer

The man may have stolen all of Ash’s catchphrases, but Duke Nukem is still one of the biggest badasses in video games. And After 14 years, he plans to prove it on June 14 when Duke Nukem Forever is released for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. 2K Games wants to get gamers excited for that momentous date by unveiling the game’s launch trailer. It’s hilariously NOT SAFE FOR WORK, but it’s also hilariously awesome too.

I’d hit it too, Duke, I’d hit it too.

WWE ’12 pins PS3, Wii, 360 this November

Smackdown has been smacked down and Raw has been cooked, this year’s WWE release from THQ will be known by the much simpler title WWE ’12. THQ promises that WWE ’12 will be “Bigger, Badder, Better” when it releases on November 22 for the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360.

Not only does the game have a new title and a new slogan, but the technology behind it has been rebuilt from the ground up:

WWE ’12 will offer players the opportunity to engage in the WWE experience through the new Predator Technology dynamic gameplay system, which is poised to deliver the most fluid, dynamic, authentic and action-packed WWE simulation experience to date. Included are the new Breaking Point submission system, new Attributes and control layout as well as significant improvements to other key gameplay systems, including Momentum and Stamina. WWE Universe Mode 2.0 will generate new and more impactful elements of unpredictability based on player decisions, while dynamic visual changes to gameplay presentation, including new animations, camera positions, lighting and improved rendering, will set the tone for delivering an exceptional simulation of WWE programming.

WWE ’12 will also include an extensive Creatve-A-Wrestler mode with customizable entrances, finishing moves, storylines and Highlight Reels along with the return of the popular Road to WrestleMania mode. Finally, the game will boast one of the largest rosters of WWE Superstars, WWE Divas and WWE Legends in franchise history, including Randy Orton, John Cena, The Miz and the debuting Alberto Del Rio.

The game’s debut trailer can be found and a ridiculously detailed developer Q&A with Creative Director Cory Ledesma can be found at SmackdownVsRaw.com (the Q&A also includes a ton of screenshots). Not surprisingly, THQ will be showcasing the game at next week’s E3 Expo.
