The Games of May 2014

gamesofmay2014-header

May is an interesting month for game releases – there’s not much coming out, but there are quite a few heavy hitters, including Transistor, Watch Dogs, and, of course, Mario Kart 8. Read on to find out what the Warp Zoned staff is most excited about for this month!

Three games are going to make the month of May a very busy one for my entertainment center.

Transistor and Wolfenstein: The New Order both launch on the same day, but they couldn’t be more different. Transistor apes the isometric action RPG style of Supergiant’s last game, Bastion, but adds several important updates. With just a polished next-gen look and a ridiculously cool sci-fi setting, I would have high hopes for the game. But it has a chance to be one of the best games of 2014 when you add in the strategic elements found in Transistor’s time-stopping “Turn” system. Wolftenstein, meanwhile, is the first game in the first-person shooter series to be developed by MachineGames. The former group of Starbreeze developers really seems to have tapped into the run-and-gun flavor that FPSs used to have and I can’t wait.

Finally, Mario Kart 8 will no doubt hook me on May 30 and keep me plugged in all throughout the month of June. My apologies to every publisher releasing a game in the first month of Summer, but I’ll be in a kart coma. OK… I guess Watch Dogs looks interesting, too. So make it four.

I am so excited about Sportsfriends that I can hardly contain it. I am really looking forward to finally playing my favorite of the collection, BaraBariBall, in my living room! Despite the fact that I’ve done everything there is to do in Borderlands 2 – and done it all twice – I’m still thinking about picking it up on the Vita, which is probably crazy. Transistor is definitely a day-one purchase for me, of course! And while I had originally pre-ordered the Watch Dogs PS4 bundle, I’ve lost some faith in the game, and I’m not sure if I’ll be buying it this month or not. I don’t currently own a Wii U, but with Mario Kart 8 on the horizon, I’m sorely tempted to use all of my Amazon points on a system just so I can play it. So many decisions!

May means one thing: MARIO KART 8! Being a destitute writer, I usually budget for games by waiting on sales and raiding bargain bins, but I will happily fork out £40 ($67.50) to play the latest version of Nintendo’s crazy racer. I’ve even bought a Wii U Pro Controller so my girlfriend can join in the fun!

I am curious to see how Watch Dogs pans out. I’ll definitely be picking it up at some stage, either on the PS4 whenever I finally buy one, or perhaps even on the Wii U, as Ubisoft seem to have a great grasp of how to make the GamePad work with games.

And let’s not forget Transistor from Supergiant Games. I want Red’s sword framed on my wall.

Not a whole lot of games to choose from this month, but the options will hopefully be amazing. I am a bit interested in Wolfenstein: The New Order based on nostalgia alone. The original was always a favorite of mine, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein was my first foray into Xbox Live multiplayer, so the series definitely holds a special place in my heart. Watch Dogs is also on my list, and I can’t wait to see how well my hometown is represented. Basically I’m hoping to drive down to 63rd and Cicero and pull into the parking lot of my old job – and blow up all the parked cars.
