Some people have been touting Super Mario Maker as the last Mario game you’ll ever need. I’m not sure I’d go that far, but the level of creativity and ingenuity found in the community-created courses is amazing. The level-editing tools Nintendo has made available in the game are extremely powerful and I can’t believe how easy it is to create my own masterpiece. How great is it? I’d be willing to spend cold hard coins on a retail collection of the best Mario Maker levels.

Before I took Super Mario Maker out of its shrink wrap, I was busy finishing up Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows. Yacht Club’s villainous expansion to their side-scrolling hit was just as satisfying as the original game and I love the new spin it gave to the story. I know they’re probably still a long ways away, but I can’t wait to see how the King Knight and Specter Knight expansions change Shovel Knight’s world.

Finally, I once again spent last month accumulating bears in Alphabear, Spry Fox’s ridiculously cute word puzzler. I am a 34-year-old man and I have no shame in admitting that collecting new bears and reading their Mad Libs-style ranting is some of the most fun I’ve had with a game all year.

I didn’t play nearly as many video games in October as I wanted to. I kept chipping away at Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, because I’m trying to get the Platinum Trophy. And I played lots and lots of mobile games – my regular Words With Friends, Twenty, Alphabear, and even the occasional 2048. I tried to get into Gravity Rush on the Vita, but found myself closing it to play Plants vs Zombies, which I ended up beating again.

But I’m excited to announce that my video game ennui was broken when I got a copy of Persona 4: Golden, which has made video gaming exciting again! Oh, and Anthony and I started up the PlayStation Plus title Chariot on the PS3, which is utterly adorable. I can’t recommend it enough!

So many games! I continued on with my Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim addiction, and added some Splatoon into the mix. I also returned to Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, trying to finish the devilish platformer on Off-TV Mode. And I finally tried the physical edition of Shovel Knight on the Wii U, and, AND (!) I finally bit the bullet and bought a PS4. I’ve already managed to amass eight games so far via trading in some PS3 titles, but the only one I’ve managed to sample was Assassins Creed: Syndicate.

Greatness Awaits.

October was pretty crazy, but I did manage to get some gaming time in. My newest obsession right now is Rocket League. I have so much fun playing this game online, and I haven’t even jumped into single-player yet. It’s so fast-paced and competitive, and some of the moves I’ve seen people do with these little remote control cars is astounding. I highly recommend picking it up. I also worked on my fishing skills in Fantasy Life, my shooting skills in Destiny, and my non-stop eating skills in Pac-Man 256. Finally, I spent my Halloween playing the Wii U’s PictoParty with the family. I was very surprised at how fun it was, and I’ll have a review up shortly.
