Nintendo Download: Severed, SMT4 Apocalypse, River City Tokyo Rumble, more

Summer might be over, but the Nindies Summer Jam rolls on with today’s selection… Severed. Available to download now for the Wii U, Severed is a touchscreen-based game from DrinkBox Studios where players take control of “a one-armed warrior named Sasha who wields a living sword” as she goes on a journey through “a nightmare world” in search of her family. Also available to download through the Wii U Shop this week is the slightly-more-normal Donkey Kong Country Returns, a side-scrolling platformer that was originally released for the Wii in 2010.

But “normal” is definitely not the word to describe Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse, an RPG now available to download for the 3DS. Players take control of a novice demon hunter who must battle for the very soul of humanity in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo… as one does.

Finally this week, a trio of beat ’em ups prove the genre is alive and well on the 3DS. First up, Final Fight 2 and Final Fight 3 made the jump from the Super NES to the handheld’s Virtual Console service. And River City: Tokyo Rumble will resurrect the famed franchise in a brand new adventure beginning on September 27.

More information on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)

  • Super Mario 3D World

3DS Games

The Last of Us is first among June 2013’s best-selling games

thelastofus-header

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us cashed in on years of hype and some of the best reviews for a PS3 game ever (including a 7/7 from our own Andrew Rainnie) to emerge as the best-selling game of June 2013. Last month’s report from The NPD Group featured plenty of other new faces including Animal Crossing: New Leaf (#2), Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition (#3, the first time its been available for retail sale), and Deadpool (#8).

Call of Duty: Black Ops II, NBA 2K13, and Battlefield 3 continue their lengthy runs as they sold enough copies to land at, respectively, #4, #5, and #9. The complete list of June 2013’s top ten best-selling games can be found after the break.

According to the NPD’s monthly report (via Game Informer), total retail sales of games, consoles, and accessories amounted to $593.3 million, a 15% decline from June 2012’s $700.6 million total. (more…)

Injustice: Gods Among Us scores another sales knockout in the May 2013 NPD report

injustice-header

Yup, you can definitely tell we’re in a console transition period. Just a single new release was able to crack the list of the top ten best-selling games of May 2013.

Deep Silver’s Metro: Last Light was that game and the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 shooter was able to claim the sixth spot for the mutants of post-apocalyptic Russia. A pair of sorta-new releases helped push the profile of two titles that were originally released in years past. The 3DS version of Donkey Kong Country Returns lifted the game to #3 and the Wii U re-release of Lego Batman 2 helped the Brick Knight squeeze into the #10 slot.

According to Game Informer, sales of retail games are down 31% from May 2012 and retail sales are going to continue to drop as Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony move towards an all-digital future. Althugh, to be fair, May 2012 did include the release of Diablo III, which sold a ton of copies at retail.

The NPD Group’s complete report on the top ten best-selling games from May 2013 can be found after the break. (more…)

dkcr-header

Donkey Kong Country Returns makes the jump to the 3DS tomorrow as, not surprisingly, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. It’ll be available in stores and on the 3DS eShop.

But the true star of this week’s Nintendo Download is Kirby. The pink puffball stars in three new games added to the Wii U Virtual Console today: Kirby’s Dream Land 3, Kirby’s Dream Course, and Kirby Super Star. Regularly priced at $7.99 each, if you buy any two of the games before May 30, you’ll get the third free.

Let’s see… also available this week is the 3DS rhythm game Groove Heaven and Naruto: Powerful Shippuden, a side-scrolling brawler based on the popular anime.

More details about all of these games can be found after the break. (more…)

newreleases051813

This week’s might seem a bit familiar to you, and that’s because we’ve seen most of them before.

Resident Evil Revelations gets the full HD treatment on the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. The game will also be available for the PC through your favorite digital download services, including Steam. In addition to the Wii U-exclusive features included with Resident Evil Revelations, three of this week’s re-releases are specifically targeting Nintendo platforms including Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D on the 3DS and Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes and Sniper Elite V2 on the Wii U. This week’s last re-release, Worms Collection for the PS3 and Xbox 360, brings together three games (and six DLC expansions) previously only available as downloads: Worms, Worms 2: Armageddon, and Worms: Ultimate Mayhem.

If you’re looking for something new, Activision has taken the sixth Fast and the Furious film and turned it into a video game. Fast & Furious: Showdown will be available for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. A portable version is also coming to the 3DS.

Finally this week, Ubisoft and Techland have come together again to release a new game in the Call of Juarez series. Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a downloadable title that’ll be available for the PC, as well as from the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

Pikmin 2 coming to Wii on June 10 with latest batch of Nintendo Selects

Nintendo has announced that Pikmin 2 will finally make its way to the Wii on June 10, more than three years after the “New Play Control” version was released in Japan, Australia, and Europe.

Instead of carrying the “New Play Control” banner that the other GameCube re-releases were saddled with, Pikmin 2 will be released as part of the Nintendo Selects line, complete with a $19.99 budget price.

Nintendo plans to add three more titles to their Nintendo Selects line on June 10 alongside Pikmin 2. Mario Power Tennis (another GameCube re-release), Donkey Kong Country Returns, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl will all be given new maroon packaging and a price cut.

Donkey Kong Country Returns and Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be priced at $29.99, while Mario Power Tennis will match Pikmin 2’s $19.99 pricetag.
