It’s raining coins in this new New Super Mario Bros. 2 trailer

Even though every New Super Mario Bros. 2 trailer is just a variation on the same theme (“Mario collects a ton of coins and then makes the streets paved with gold”), each one manages to plaster a giant smile on my face. Such is the power of Mario and lure of massive amounts of loot. Go Mario! Collect those coins!

New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be available for the 3DS on August 19.

It’s all about the coins in this New Super Mario Bros. 2 trailer

Even though Wario is the character from the Mushroom Kingdom typically associated with a gold obsession, Mario is getting the Midas Touch in New Super Mario Bros. 2 as well. Quite literally in fact, as a special block will turn all of the Koopa Troopas and Goombas into solid gold versions of themselves.

That’s not the only golden opportunity Mario will have. Pounding a special coin block wraps his head in a box that continuously spits out coins. And obtaining the Golden Fire Flower… you guessed it… presses blocks and enemies into mountains of coins.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be available for the 3DS on August 19.

3DS, Wii U retail games to be sold digitally… starting with New Super Mario Bros. 2

The 3DS eShop just got a whole lot cooler. Nintendo has announced that, beginning this August, the online store will offer downloadable versions of retail games. First on the list… New Super Mario Bros. 2.

Like current 3DS eShop downloads, downloadable retail games must be stored on an SD card and will only be playable on the handheld they were purchased on. If you’re one of those people who are still uneasy about using a credit card on the Internet, brick-and-mortar retailers will also sell download codes for 3DS digital downloads. Best of all, retailers can set the price for a download code just as they can for a cartridge game, so we might see some big sales for downloadable 3DS games.

Nintendo also announced that “Onitore,” the game more popularly known as Brain Age: Devil Training, will receive a US release and that it too will be available sometime this year as both a retail release and a digital download.

Finally, Nintendo confirmed that the same retail/digital download deal will apply to Wii U games when the system launch’s this Fall. So shoppers will be able to download any Nintendi-publisher Wii U title at the same time the game is released in stores.

Hey! Nintendo can finally say they’ve one-upped Sony and Microsoft in the online arena for something!

Nintendo has been teasing a new sidescrolling Mario game for the 3DS for more than a year now, and this morning the company finally revealed New Super Mario Bros. 2. The game will be available this August and it’ll bring Mario, Luigi, and the popular Super Leaf with it.

2D Mario game coming to 3DS before Q1 2013

Nintendo’s quarterly financial briefings are always full of surprises, and this week’s was no exception.

During the investor’s presentation, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that a 2D Super Mario Bros. side-scroller will be released for the 3DS during Nintendo’s next fiscal year. That’s sometime between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013 for those of us still using the good old Gregorian calendar.

We know that the game has been in development for at least a year as Shigeru Miyamoto revealed his involvement with a 2D Mario game for the 3DS during Nintendo’s October 2010 financial briefing.

See, there’s always something exciting happening at a Nintendo financial briefing.
