Retro City Rampage Review: Nostalgia Gone Wild

“What would Grand Theft Auto have been like on the NES?” It’s an interesting question, and one that Vblank’s Retro City Rampage attempts to answer by fusing the franchise’s original bird’s-eye viewpoint with a bucketful of 80s/90s nostalgia. The game never quite comes together, but designer Brian Provinciano definitely deserves points for trying. (more…)

It’s another big week for Nintendo’s download services… and we even get another Wii U game.

That game is Gaijin Games’ Bit.Trip Presents Runner 2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien. The platformer, which stars everyone’s favorite monochrome mascot, CommanderVideo, is available today is both demo and full version form.

Also available this week is Konami’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate. The 3DS side-story that bridges the gap between the two Lords of Shadow games on the PS3/Xbox 360 is available now as a demo, with the full game set to hit the 3DS eShop on Tuesday, March 5.

Finally, this week finally marks the release of Retro City Rampage on the Wii Shop Channel. An 8-bit-styled, open-world game reminiscent of Grand Theft Auto’s early days, Retro City Rampage on the Wii includes the special “ROM City Rampage” mode, which morphs the game into a true 8-bit adventure that would have worked on the NES.

Hit the jump for more details on all of these games as well as three other additions to this week’s Nintendo Download. (more…)

Vblank Entertainment has teased Retro City Rampage‘s impending debut on the Xbox Live Arcade and Wii Shop Channel all month long. Today, the developer is finally ready to announce that the game will be added to the XBLA on January 2 (priced at 1200 Microsoft Points/$15).

That’s right, next week!

A variety of tweaks of polishing were added to the XBLA version, making it the ultimate version of Retro City Rampage. This additional content is also available on the PS3/Vita version of the game as a downloadable patch.

The WiiWare rendition of the game is still on track for a January release.

Retro City Rampage readying for XBLA, WiiWare release

Vblank Entertainment has revealed that Retro City Rampage will soon be available to download from the Xbox Live Arcade and Nintendo’s WiiWare service. According to Vblank, both versions are currently going through “console certification” in North America and Europe and, barring any setbacks, will be released soon.

Retro City Rampage was first released for the PC, PS3, and Vita in North America on October 9, and since then, Vblank has been hard at work on tweaking the game to make it better. These tweaks (which are currently available on the PC/PS3/Vita as a title update) include “faster cars, tips screens, shop icons on the map, additional tutorials, checkpoints, level balancing and more.”

Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to get another chance to play Retro City Rampage. And for our friends across the Atlantic, the European release of the PS3/Vita version of the game was also said to be nearing completion as well.

PSN Today: Dishonored, Retro City Rampage, Walking Dead Episode 4, more

It’s another massive day for the PlayStation Store as Sony has added 15 titles to their digital marketplace.

The highlight of this week’s crop is most certainly Dishonored, Bethesda’s Victorian-era steampunk stealth game. But a slew of interesting titles became available today including the top-down madness of Retro City Rampage, the violent toys of Naughty Bear: Panic in Paradise and the lumbering undead of The Walking Dead: Episode 4 – Around Every Corner.

More information on all of this week’s new additions can be found after the break and (as always) the PlayStation Blog has a fine rundown of this week’s new game add-ons. (more…)

Retro City Rampage sets the world on fire on October 9 on PC, PS3, Vita

In a strange turn of events, Retro City Rampage – which had been slated to be released for WiiWare and Xbox Live at separate times and never made it to either – will be coming out on October 9 on PC, PS3, and Vita. Not that I’m complaining – after playing it years ago at PAX, I was bummed to find out it was coming to every console but the one I had at the time. But now, barring any additional strange barriers, hopefully the game will really be coming out next week.

Retro City Rampage was created by Brian Provinciano and has been showcased dozens of times. Its quirky backgrounds and obvious homage to the original Grand Theft Auto, coupled with its genuinely retro feel, make it a funny, entertaining game.

The game will be available for PC via Steam and GOG.com, though you can also buy it DRM-free through retrocityrampage.com and get a Steam or GOG download code as a bonus. If you’re buying it for the PSN, you will get copies for the PS3 and the Vita, which is pretty amazing. No matter how you buy it, it will cost $14.99.

The game will also be coming to the Wii Shop and Xbox Live Arcade… at some point. But for now I’m going to gorge myself on RCR on both of my Sony devices as soon as Tuesday* hits.

* Unless it gets delayed again.
