The Games of October 2018

The Fall is in full swing here in Warp Zoned’s northerly headquarters, and that means Apple Cider, Pumpkin Spice, a lot of talk about the leaves, and plenty of new video games. There are so many games set to launch this month, but one stands out head and shoulders above all the rest… I’m talking, of course, about Just Dance 2019.

Nah, it’s actually Rockstar’s latest magnum opus, Red Dead Redemption 2. You know you’re doing something right when you’re a developer with multiple magnum opuses (opusii?). And that is definitely the case with Rockstar and their newest trip back to the American West.

But there are other games we’re excited for this month, and you can read all about them after the break.

Mega Man 11 (October 2)
Mega Man is back! The eleventh game in the mainline Mega Man series doesn’t look like it’ll stray too far from the franchise’s well-established formula, but Capcom’s in-house development team has given the Blue Bomber a flashy new look. The eight Robot Masters will also be bigger than ever before, and the new Double Gear mechanic gives Mega Man the ability to fire a supercharged beam and slow down time. Modern platformers like Shovel Knight and 20XX have changed the way we look at some of the old classics, but I’m very interested to see where Capcom is finally taking their mighty mascot. – John Scalzo

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (October 12)
Year after year, many Call of Duty fans say they have no use for the single-player campaigns produced by the franchise’s trio of development teams. Now it looks like Activision is finally taking them at their word and jettisoning the Story Mode from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. In its place is nearly a dozen Multiplayer maps, an expanded Zombies experience (I am excited for Zombies in Ancient Rome), and Treyarch’s take on the battle royale genre (Blackout). Will it work? I don’t know, but it’ll be interesting to try out. – John Scalzo

Starlink: Battle For Atlas (October 16)
There were many, many highlights from E3 2018, but one moment in particular pushed me back to my childhood of playing video games. I thought I heard the sound of the communicator from the Star Fox series during Ubisoft’s trailer for Starlink: Battle For Atlas. I think I may have even gasped, but when they revealed that Star Fox was indeed coming to the game I shouted out, “NO!”

Star Fox Zero on the Wii U underlined that Nintendo was more focused on the console’s ridiculous motion controls at that point than the actual game (though frustrating, largely due to the controls, I did find it found enjoyable). I think Star Fox will be a great fit for Starlink, and from the gameplay footage released so far, it looks like it will finally deliver the explosive space battles we have hoped for our furry pilot. Would I buy it without Star Fox being included? Possibly (I’m a sucker for collectibles). But his addition to the game’s roster of characters pushes it from a possibly to a definite day one purchase. Thankfully, my birthday falls in October too! – Andrew Rainnie

Red Dead Redemption 2 (October 26)
Red Dead Redemption is a game that will sit with me forever. I adored that story, was gutted by the ending, and will never forget those characters. The sense of humor and humanity they gave them, their shortcomings – they were so believable. While I did have my complaints – I hated that horse more than any other horse in a video game, and the glitches were just comically over the top – I’m sure that in 2018 we’ll be able to touch water without dying. Please, someone tell me that in Red Dead Redemption 2 I’ll be able to touch water without dying. – Nicole Kline

** NEW RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 1 **
Grim Fandango Remastered (October TBA)

Of all the LucasArts point-and-click adventure games that were released, Grim Fandango was one that eluded me, both on its initial release and when it was remastered for the PS4 a few years ago. But now it’s coming to the Nintendo Switch, my current console of choice, and I think it’s time I discovered why the game is, after 20 years, still held in such a high regard. Despite having never played it, I always admired it for its artwork, and thought it was almost Pratchett-esque in it’s humorous rendition of the Grim Reaper. Now, if only someone could remaster the Discworld game! – Andrew Rainnie
