The Games of November 2018

I’m sure that many gamers have decided to check out for the season now that Red Dead Redemption 2 is available on store shelves. But like always, November is just jam-packed with new titles, and some of them are impossible to ignore.

We here at Warp Zoned have a lengthy shopping list for this month, and that includes the long-awaited return of a few well-loved franchises (Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Darksiders III), as well the first multiplayer experience in the Fallout series (Fallout 76), a psychedelic VR-powered take on Tetris (Tetris Effect) from Sony.

Find out exactly why we’re looking forward to these games after the break.

Grim Fandango Remastered (November 1)
Of all the LucasArts point-and-click adventure games that were released, Grim Fandango was one that eluded me, both on its initial release and when it was remastered for the PS4 a few years ago. But now it’s coming to the Nintendo Switch, my current console of choice, and I think it’s time I discovered why the game is, after 20 years, still held in such a high regard. Despite having never played it, I always admired it for its artwork, and thought it was almost Pratchett-esque in it’s humorous rendition of the Grim Reaper. Now, if only someone could remaster the Discworld game! – Andrew Rainnie

Moonlighter (November 5)
I missed Moonlighter when it was released back in May, but I’m going to give Digital Sun’s dungeon crawler a look with it’s upcoming release on the Switch. I love the game’s art design, which is like a cross between Hyper Light Drifter and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. After spending the last month or two repeatedly dying in Dead Cells, I’m looking forward to a slower RPG experience. I’m also intrigued by the selling mechanic to progress, and with five dungeons to explore, it sounds like a definite download. – Andrew Rainnie

Tetris Effect (November 9)
Like clockwork, The Tetris Company licenses a new version of Tetris every few years. 2014’s Tetris Ultimate was a decent entry in the long-running franchise (and the only way to play the puzzle game on the PS4 or Xbox One), but it lacked that something that makes a truly great game of Tetris. That all changes this month with the PS4-exclusive release of Tetris Effect, which was directed by Tetsuya Mizuguchi (the creator of Rez and Lumines). Owing to Mizuguchi’s style, Tetris Effect includes wild visual effects and it’s also compatible with the PlayStation VR headset. VR is a cool addition to Tetris, but let’s face it, I was sold after you said Mizuguchi. – John Scalzo

Spyro Reignited Trilogy (November 13)
I’m sorry to say I missed the original Spyro series, coming late to the PlayStation experience (I started with a PS3). But this “Reignited” version looks delightfully charming, offering players a second chance at a platformer that might just stand up against Super Mario Odyssey, especially after Knack and it’s sequel failed to hold a candle to the plumber. Plus, as a fantasy writer, I love dragons. – Andrew Rainnie

Fallout 76 (November 14)
I’m almost too excited for November, if that could be possible! But I’m trying not to get excited about Fallout 76, because so far, everything I’ve read about it has cast it as the kind of game I wouldn’t enjoy playing. However, from what little I’ve seen of the B.E.T.A. so far, I’m having a decent time! It’s true that what I really want is more Fallout 4, and in that respect, I’ll probably be disappointed. But I’m trying to keep an open mind about Fallout 76’s multiplayer focus. – Nicole Kline

Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let’s Go Eevee! (November 16)
Pokemon: Let’s Go! comes out two days after Fallout 76, and I know that’s going to be a true joy. I played some of it at PAX West (using the new Pokeball Controller!) and I adored it. Walking around and using an actual throwing motion to catch Pokemon was a delight. I’m more and more impressed with the Switch with every new game I get for it. So I guess what I’m saying is, if all else fails in the Commonwealth, at least I’ll have Eevee to keep me company! – Nicole Kline

Darksiders III (November 27)
The original Darksiders and its sequel may have been rough around the edges, but they brought with them a beautifully realised apocalyptic world filled with lore and questions about humanity’s future. I love the idea that Fury is following a similar path of her fellow Horsemen War and Death, and the events in her game may run parallel to one of the others. While it is the third in the franchise, it is the first game developed outside Vigil Games (though Gunfire Games does share many of the same developers). So in that way, it’s a small miracle that we’re getting the game at all, and for that I’m grateful. – Andrew Rainnie
