Noel Gallagher blames UK riots on video games

I’m still not entirely clear on the reasons behind the London riots, but former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher thinks he has the answer… video games:

“We live in this age of violence – and I don’t care what other people say: Brutal TV and brutal video games are a reason for this pointless violence as well. The people are immune to violence, they are used to it. And if they get caught they aren’t punished the right way. The prisons are already full? Then build new ones!”

Bear in mind, this is a man who bludgeoned his brother with a cricket bat for talking too loudly. So he’s definitely an expert on why someone would want to partake in a bit of the ultraviolence. But something tells me that Noel isn’t a big gamer.

So then what’s his excuse for being a drunken psycho… wait, I think I know now.

Borderlands 2 teaser trailer goes guncrazy with the Gunzerker

Well here’s a nice late night surprise. A few minutes ago, 2K Games released the first teaser trailer for Borderlands 2! The short clip focuses on new character Salvador the Gunzerker and his “shoot first, ask questions never” gameplay style.

Borderlands 2 will be available for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012, but if you can’t wait that long the game will be playable at both Gamescom 2011 (from August 17 – August 21) and PAX Prime (Booth #3417 from August 26 – August 28).

Gears of War 3 gets stereoscopic 3D mode

If you thought Marcus Fenix and the rest of Delta Squad were frightening before, wait until you see them bursting out of the screen in stereoscopic 3D. Executive Producer Rod Fergusson confirmed that Gears of War 3 will include the eye-popping visual mode in an interview with Eurogamer.

“We asked, could we do it? It felt like something we wanted to have. It was a feature we didn’t want to be deficient in. […] It’s still fledgling technology,” Fergusson said. “It’s still a niche feature. But it was something we could support, so we felt, why not?”

Sadly, this means that Gears of War 3’s visuals will have to be rendered at a sub-720p resolution. Fergusson delivered the bad news himself: “It’s a little bit jaggier in certain areas. Instead of 720p you’re at five something.”

But fear not Xbox 360 owners, Fergusson used the same interview to reveal that “full” 720p stereoscopic 3D support is coming to the console sometime in the future. But obviously not before GoW3’s September 20 release date.

First Lollipop Chainsaw trailer is full of candy, rainbows, pigtails and blood

Lollipop lollipop // Oh lolli lolli lolli // Lollipop lollipop…

The Chordettes’ 1958 classic “Lollipop” serves as the backdrop for the first trailer for Suda 51’s Lollipop Chainsaw. That piece of pop music candy is the perfect accompaniment to a cel-shaded cheerleader slicing and dicing zombies with a magical chainsaw.

Lollipop Chainsaw will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 by WB Games sometime in 2012. So start practicing your splits and high kicks now.

Mr. Freeze tries to ice Batman in the latest Arkham City trailer

Cutting an imposing silhouette that bears a bit of a resemblance to BioShock‘s Big Daddy, Mr. Freeze says “ice to see you” in the latest Batman: Arkham City trailer. You should definitely give it a watch, it’s so cool.

OK, that’s enough icy puns for one article, I wouldn’t want you to give me the cold shoulder. Batman: Arkham City will be available for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 18.

August continues to plod along with little excitement coming out of the game industry and even fewer new games. But this week we took a hands-on look at the upcoming Driver: San Francisco as well as posted Episode 17 of the Warp Zoned Podcast. The staff discussed a very important topic: Borderlands! What they love, what they hate, and most importantly, how to catch a riiiiiiiiiiiiiiide. We also talked a bit about the new 3DS Ambassador program Nintendo unveiled and we rounded it out with whether or not games are too expensive, what’s too much to pay for a game, and why some developers can be real hypocrites about it.

Sonic 4 Episode 2 announcement coming “very soon”

Hey, remember that side-scrolling reboot of the Sonic series that Sega said would honor the hedgehog’s Genesis roots? And no, I’m not talking about the upcoming Sonic Generations. It’s easy to forget, but I’m actually talking about the episodic adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Episode I was released in October of last year and in the ten months since, Sega has mentioned nary a peep about Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. But, according to Sega West CEO Mike Hayes, an announcement concerning the downloadable game will arrive “very soon.” And actually, we should “look out for that one.”

Mike, buddy, I don’t want to tell you how to run your business, but if there’s nearly a year between the release of Episode I and the announcement of Episode II, that’s not an episodic release schedule. Just ask Gabe Newell.
