allyoucanarcade-header

Over the weekend, the founders of All You Can Arcade began their quest to become the GameFly of the arcade industry. From their headquarters in Antioch, California, the company rents out classic arcade cabinets for $75 a month. Is it a viable business model? What happens when someone located on the East Coast like me wants to rent a machine? We sat down for a quick chat with Seth Peterson, All You Can Arcade’s co-founder and CEO, to find out. (more…)

Ultra Street Fighter IV adds five characters in early 2014

Capcom just can’t stop. During this weekend’s Evo 2013 event, the publisher announced that the latest Street Fighter IV update, Ultra Street Fighter IV, will be available for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 in early 2014.

If you already own Super Street Fighter IV or Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, the update will be available as a DLC expansion priced at $14.99. Capcom also plans to sell the game as a disc-based retail release with a $39.99 price tag.

So what does Ultra Street Fighter IV add to the franchise? Aside from the usual round of balance tweaks, the game will add several new arenas and five new characters. Three (Rolento, Hugo, and Poison) made their video game debuts in the Final Fight franchise, while a fourth (Elena) was originally found in Street Fighter III. The fifth character is currently a mystery.

I don’t know why Capcom didn’t go with the name “Super Duper Street Fighter IV” for this update. After all, they already had the logo.

Far Cry 4 announcement coming “soon”

farcry-header

Far Cry 3 and its standalone expansion, Blood Dragon, have been huge hits for Ubisoft this year. So I don’t anyone’s monocle is going to pop off at the news that the publisher is getting ready to announce Far Cry 4.

Speaking to GameSpot, Ubisoft’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Tony Key, had this to say: “We’re totally psyched from [Far Cry 3]. It’s a great brand, and now it’s got the recognition it deserves, so we’re clearly going to make another one: more on that soon.”

Hmm, Gamescom 2013 opens on August 21. That’s “soon,” right?

Mad Max gameplay trailer asks “What is the Soul of a Man?”

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Avalanche Studios have released the first gameplay trailer for their game adaptation of Mad Max. If you look real close, you can certainly see a few moments of pure gameplay, but the trailer is just as heavy with cinematic cutscenes and views of the ominous Wasteland. Still pretty impressive, though.

Mad Max is due out sometime in 2014 for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Injustice’s next DLC character is Martian Manhunter

After first teasing his addition to the game over a month ago, NetherRealm Studios has officially revealed that Martian Manhunter will be the next DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us. NetherRealm released the first trailer featuring Martian Manhunter (as well as a John Stewart Green Lantern skin with new dialogue) at this year’s Evo 2013 event. You can check it out above.

No release date for the Martian Manhunter DLC was announced.

Rockstar Toronto is hiring for a next-gen game

rockstarlogoRockstar Games has been very quiet about their post-Grand Theft Auto V plans. But it looks like at least one of their studios is making the jump into next-generation game development.

Rockstar Toronto is currently hiring for an Environment Artist who will be tasked with “designing, building and texturing the world” of a new game in development for “next-gen consoles.” The PS4 and Xbox One were not specifically mentioned by name, so any speculation about platforms at this point would just be guesswork. Similarly, asking whether the game will be part of an existing Rockstar franchise (including the hope that it’s a next-gen port of GTA5) or an original property is equally speculative.

Max Payne 3 is the most recent game on Rockstar Toronto’s resume. The team was part of the “Rockstar Studios” collective (alongside Rockstar London, Rockstar New England, and the now defunct Rockstar Vancouver) that developed the title.

Weekly Warp-Up: Happy Anniversary to the App Store

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Happy Anniversary… Happy Anniversary… Haaappy Anniversary!

Apple’s iOS App Store celebrated its fifth anniversary this week and the massive company is sharing the wealth by giving iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users a present in the form of ten free games. And they aren’t just random titles, it’s some of the best stuff the App Store has to offer including Infinity Blade II, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Angry Birds Star Wars, Peggle, and Mirror’s Edge. And speaking of Angry Birds Star Wars… Rovio has strongly hinted that the next five years of the iOS App Store will begin with the announcement of a sequel to the popular bird-flinger based on the Prequel Trilogy.

In non-video game news, we sat down with the co-creator of the card game Don’t Play With Drugs on the eve of the end of its Kickstarter campaign. Sadly, the community chose not to fund the project, but hopefully the team at Right After Then will try again in the future.

What do you think about tabletop gaming coverage on Warp Zoned? Would you like to see more? Let us know in the comments and be sure to hit the jump for more news from the week that was. (more…)
