Hundreds now available on iTunes App Store

Hundreds is the latest game from Semi Secret Software and the minimalist puzzle game has quite the pedigree behind it with the creators of Gasketball, Wurdle, Osmos, and iOS favorite Canabalt all having a hand in its development.

So what is Hundreds? Well, the game gives you a set of circles with a zero in the middle of each one. By tapping the circles, you increment the number. The goal is to coninue tapping them until the numbers inside each circle add up to “100.” Sounds easy, right? But if two circles that have been recently tapped touch, they explode. And various mathematical symbols are floating within each level to mess with your addition skills.

Not so easy anymore is it?

Hundreds was first released as a Flash game on Newgrounds and the iOS is said to be improved in every way. Hundreds for the iOS (it’s playable on both the iPad and iPhone/iPod Touch) includes over 100 levels and is available to download for $2.99 until January 10 (then the price jumps up to $4.99).

Sony has applied for a patent to chain game discs to a PSN account

sonyusedgamepatent

On September 12, Sony Computer Entertainment filed a patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office for a “Use Permission Apparatus” connected with a game system. Even if you don’t speak lawyer, the implications of the patent application are clear… Sony wants a way to chain disc-based games to a user account and/or game system.

This patent application comes on the heels of a March 2012 rumor that specifically linked a universal online pass system to the PlayStation 4/Orbis. Such a system would effectively require all used game buyers to re-authenticate their used games (likely for a small fee) through an online service like Sony’s PlayStation Network.

It should be said that, for now, this apparatus is just a patent application and exists only as drawings and words on a computer. There’s no guarantee that it’ll be included in the PlayStation 4/Orbis. And unless Sony wants to incur the greatest fan backlash ever, I doubt it’ll ever be included in any system.

Latest Earth Defense Force 2025 trailer shows off the EDF’s vehicles

D3 Publisher Japan has released another trailer for Earth Defense Force 2025, again focusing on the new Air Raider class and his accompaniment of deployable pods (which include air strikes, shield walls, turrets, and health beacons).

The trailer also give a good bit of screentime to the EDF’s vehicles. With Sandlot taking back the development reins, they’ve pushed the helicopter back into service. A trio of tanks, a massive new walking mech, and a motorcycle with a sidecar (which likely replaces the hoverbike) can also be seen.

Earth Defense Force 2025 will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime this year.

Since it’s release in May, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has sailed past numerous sales records. Xbox Live Arcade users scooped up two million, then three million, and finally four million copies of pixelated favorite. What comes next? Why, five million, of course.

Daniel Kaplan, Mojang’s Business Developer, has revealed that on December 31, the Xbox 360 Edition of Minecraft surpassed five million copies sold:

Minecraft really is the little game that could and I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before it reaches six million. Say it with me: I think I can… I think I can…

codeofprincessThis week’s Nintendo Download is all about the 3DS as a pair of RPGs, a side-scrolling cowboy adventure, and a new take on the greatest game you can play on a table full of holes were added to the 3DS eShop today.

Rounding out this week’s new additions are two DSiWare games: the vertical-scrolling shooter Galaxy Saver and the extreme snowboarding of Snowboard Xtreme (bet you didn’t see that one coming).

More information on all of these titles can be found after the break. (more…)

Nintendo will make a big Pokemon announcement on January 8

pokemonblackwhite-2A Japanese commercial for Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 has confirmed that Nintendo is planning to make a Pokemon-related announcement on January 8.

The commercial promises to reveal “the latest information” about the franchise’s future, but what exactly that means is a mystery. Speaking of mysteries, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity was released for the 3DS in Japan back in November. So with the first spinoff available for the handheld, perhaps this announcement of an announcement means it’s time for a proper Pokemon game on the 3DS.
