Playable Google Doodle celebrates birthday of Frank Zamboni

googledoodlezamboniToday’s Google Doodle is another playable one, promising to waste time for everyone. In the game, people go out on the ice and mark it all up, after which it’s your job to go out with your Zamboni and make the ice all smooth again. There are pickups and obstacles, of course, just like any good old-school game. And it’s also completely adorable.

The Doodle is in honor of Frank Zamboni, creator of – what else? – the Zamboni machine, which cleans up the ice after each period in a hockey game. This is also fortuitous seeing as the hockey lockout just ended and hockey will return this very weekend. Needless to say, I’m sure hockey fans are psyched to play this game.

Once the Doodle has smoothed its way off the Google homepage, you’ll still be able to play it here: google.com/doodles/zamboni

Happy 112th birthday, Frank!

Pandora’s Tower coming to North America this Spring thanks to XSEED Games

pandorastowerSQUEEEEEE

Pandora’s Tower is coming to North America! This Spring! XSEED Games is bringing the long-awaited JRPG for the Wii to our shores in just a few months.

Who do I thank first? XSEED, the publisher who brings us so many great games we’d never see? Operation Rainfall, the amazing team that helped bring Xenoblade and The Last Story into our arms? I’m certainly not going to thank Nintendo, who could have done this a million months ago.

I guess I’ll just thank the CEO of XSEED, Shinichi Suzuki, who had this to say in the press release: “It’s fantastic to be bringing such a highly-anticipated title like Pandora’s Tower to such a vocal fan base… North American gamers have been very patient in waiting for this game to be released, and we’re confident they will be pleased when they get their hands on the title.”

We’re confident, too. What could we not like about a “tale of unfortunate circumstance” that includes a character who “succumbs to a wretched curse during a festival performance,” and then transforms into a monster? The love of her life fights to save her, battling through thirteen towers and fighting monsters to reverse her transformation. Just watch this European trailer if you’re not convinced.

Deep Silver in deep over mutilated female torso statue

deadislandriptide-header

Some days, I feel like the gaming industry is making progress in accepting its female audience and making them feel welcome. But then something happens, like Deep Silver announcing a mutilated female torso statue with a Union Jack bikini barely covering up its lady bits, and all that faith starts to crumble.

Their reprehensible UK-only “Zombie Bait Edition” for Dead Island: Riptide was announced earlier today, and was quickly followed up by an apology, but the damage was already done. Many gamers, especially freelance writer Jenn Frank, were absolutely outraged. “People, how did we get here? Really? Really. How is a woman’s mangled body, a literal trophy on your desk, even remotely defensible,” she tweeted. Frank’s statements were on point, and she didn’t let up: “Stop sending me apologies. It takes a profound amount of foresight to conceive, design, produce a limited run, and then announce them.”

What can Deep Silver do to make up for this? I don’t imagine they can, at this point. Sure, they’ll still sell games, but they’ve just lost a lot of respect. All I want to do is quote Frank more: “So hey, I have as much right to this as you do, right? You can still have a voice, I’m so into that. But here’s a thought: BE LESS HORRIBLE,” and “Anyway, if you play games, I love you. You understand my world, and you already know games can change the world. So don’t stand for this BS.”

The Mary Sue had a good point – the apology doesn’t ever say the word “woman,” and mentions nothing about them actually pulling the offensive edition.

This is a sad day for the industry.

Well, let’s face it: I’m excited about all of it.

And there’s a good deal to go along with the DLC today – Borderlands 2 is just $29.99 on Amazon today on PS3 and Xbox 360. Go scoop it up and spend the other $30 you would have spent on the Season Pass! It’s like it was fated or something.

Explore Double Fine’s The Cave next week

Double Fine’s latest game, The Cave, will be available next week, and this awesome little trailer shows off the seven characters you can choose from. It’s a pretty diverse group: Adventurer, Hillbilly, Knight, Monk, Scientist, Time Traveler, and “the Twins.” The Monk’s description was my favorite: “He seeks a journey filled with peace and enlightenment… and murder!” followed by evil laughter and an apology by the narrator, who is a talking cave.

Brought to you by creator Ron Gilbert (Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island) and Double Fine (Brütal Legend and Psychonauts), it’s a game you won’t want to miss. The Cave will be out on the PlayStation Network and Nintendo eShop for Wii U on January 22 for $14.99, and a day later on PC and the Xbox Live Arcade for $14.99/1200 Microsoft Points.

2013 Independent Games Festival nominees announced

independentgamesfestival-header

The finalists have been announced for this year’s Independent Games Festival, and the lists are full of games I love, and games I can’t wait to love. I’m sad that 10000000 isn’t on there, considering that’s what would get my vote for the game that totally destroyed my life for two days. Well, I guess that might not be what developers want to be known for, but I promise – it’s a compliment.

Whether or not my favorite time on the iPad is represented here, there are plenty of great games being celebrated. Kentucky Route Zero is up for Excellence In Visual Art, Pixeljunk 4AM has been nominated for Excellence In Audio, and another one of my favorites, Super Hexagon, might just win Excellence In Design. The games will be playable at GDC in March on the expo floor. Hit the jump for the full list of categories, finalists, and honorable mentions. (more…)
