Daily Scoop: January 3, 2012 – I’m back!

Whew! It’s been a long time, friends. I have been busy doing so much! Christmas and the celebration of the New Year coming in were both absolutely wonderful. I finally got a Tokidoki purse, my mom surprised me with a Pandora bracelet (which I’m nervous to wear!), and my amazing boyfriend made me a Blood Bowl team! The Nurgalos are now a real, official team, and not just a modgepodge of other people’s minis. I was the happiest girl in the universe on Christmas! And for New Year’s Eve, we went to a local bar and rang in 2012 with some good friends and good beers. It was a delight.

And the happiness continues! First I’d like to say Happy Birthday, Warp Zoned! We turned a year old on January 1, and it was a proud and wonderful moment. Thank you for everyone who made it possible!

And now, a few tiny deals and, of course, some t-shirts! Today’s Deals of the Day are all PC downloads from 2K Games! Duke Nukem Forever is $15.32, Sid Meier’s Civilization IV: The Complete Edition is $24.95, L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition is $12.49, and The Stronghold Collection is $19.95.

GameStop is also having some sales – they’ve currently got a 50% off accessories sale, as well as a $75 gift card offer with these Xbox 360 consoles. Time to spend all that holiday cash burning a hole in your pocket!

I’ve got two t-shirts for you today: (more…)

The Last Guardian cancelled, says GameStop

According to a bunch of gamers chiming in all over the Internet, as well as Destructoid (who posted a recording of the call), The Last Guardian has been cancelled. GameStop has been calling to let people who pre-ordered the game know that publisher Sony has contacted them and told them it was cancelled.

Coming on the heels of Fumito Ueda leaving Sony Japan, this is not all that surprising, but it is certainly devastating. I guess Ueda was not as committed as Sony thought he was. Or hopefully, this is just a rumor, or a miscommunication. Or something. Christmas is this week! You can’t cancel Last Guardian!

UPDATE: Sony has informed IGN that The Last Guardian is not cancelled. Furthermore, GameStop issued a correction, stating the calls were due to the game being removed from their system due to its lack of a release date.

Game of Thrones RPG gets a new website, snowy trailer

The new Game of Thrones RPG for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 is actually looking pretty promising. The new trailer, titled “The Wall,” shows some of what you’ll be up against in a Westeros we aren’t exactly familiar with.

They’ve also got a shiny new website, and I’m digging that they’re using the music from the show. It’s shaping up to be an interesting amalgam of the book and the show. Also, if they get enough “Likes” on their Facebook page, they’ll open up more areas to explore on the site. So start unlocking! It’s a long way to early 2012… oh wait, no it’s not. Oh well. Unlock anyway! I’m impatient.

Retailers list February release date for Kinect Star Wars, R2-D2 Xbox 360 bundle

Is it time to rejoice, my fellow Star Wars nerds? It looks like Kinect Star Wars may just have a release date – which means that ridiculously amazing Xbox 360 Limited Edition Kinect Star Wars Bundle may have one, too! Walmart has a February 7 release date listed for the game and bundle, while Kmart has the same date for the game. I can’t even find the bundle on Amazon right now (it’s actually been pulled), and the game still just says it will be released in December 2012.

I’m thinking February 7 is the date. With the recently released ESRB Rating Summary, it’s clear moving and shaking is happening – possibly literally and figuratively. I’ve been holding out on buying a 360 since this bundle was announced, determined that this will be my first ever Xbox. And with a March birthday, this is pretty awesome timing, Microsoft. Thanks for thinking of me.

Minecraft tops Time Magazine’s top 10 video games of 2011

Time Magazine has announced their “Top 10 Everything of 2011” lists, which of course contains a list of video games. Did your favorite games of this year make the list? Number 10…

10. Battlefield 3
9. Sword & Sworcery
8. Dark Souls
7. The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim
6. Bastion
5. Batman: Arkham City
4. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
3. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
2. Portal 2
1. Minecraft

My favorite game of 2011, Dead Space 2, did not make that list – nor have I seen it on any other lists. That’s what happens when games get released at the beginning of the year, I suppose. Ah well. For full commentary, check out the Time Magazine article.

10 million copies of Skyrim shipped

In an announcement surprising to no one, Bethesda Softworks said they’ve shipped 10 million copies of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. In PC games alone, it outsold all other PC games three to one in the first month of its release. Digitally speaking, it’s also the “fastest selling title in Steam’s history,” according to Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve Corporation.

Skyrim has also been raking in countless awards and attention, from Game of the Year at Spike TV’s VGAs to Raptr’s Most-Played Game of 2011. G4TV, Official Xbox Magazine, and Machinima.com also gave Skyrim their Game of the Year Award. This comes as no surprise, seeing as this same developer also got game of the year in 2006 with Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and in 2008 with Fallout 3.

I haven’t played any of the Elder Scrolls games, but this might be the year that I cave and get one. I might start with Oblivion and then ease my way into Skyrim. Don’t be alarmed – that sound you hear is just my backlog weeping.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 makes $1 billion in 16 days, surprises no one

Activision announced on Monday that their latest blockbuster, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, made $1 billion in the first 16 days of its release, beating out the previous record set by Avatar in 2009, which got to that milestone in 17 days.

The press release was full of random facts, including this one, which gave me pause: “With more than 30 million gamers, the Call of Duty community now exceeds the combined populations of the cities of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris and Madrid.” For the record, the total population of those five cities is 42 million. You fail math forever, Activision!

The article went on to say that the CoD games are “now amongst that rarefied group of sustained franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and the National Football League (NFL) that attract or engage tens of millions of people every year or every new release.”

Wow. Comparing Call of Duty to the NFL? That’s pretty intense. I still haven’t picked up my copy of Modern Warfare 3, but maybe Santa will leave it in my stocking.

Alan Wake coming to PC in 2012

Remedy Entertainment has announced (or rather, reannounced) Alan Wake for the PC, scheduled to release in early 2012. These are the same developers responsible for the PC development of Death Rally and Max Payne 1 and 2, so it’s clear they’ve got the experience necessary.

This PC version will also include both downloadable expansions, The Signal and The Writer. This announcement comes as no surprise in the wake (see what I did there?) of last weekend’s VGA announcement detailing Alan Wake’s American Nightmare.
