Square Enix officially confirms that a new Tomb Raider game is in development

Last Summer, Crystal Dynamics hired Ian Milham as their Franchise Director for Tomb Raider, effectively confirming that a third game in the rebooted adventures of Lara Croft was in the works.

Today, Square Enix officially announced the game with a short tweet, and said we’ll hear more about it during a major 2018 event:

Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to learn more about the next Tomb Raider game, but eagle-eyed readers might have already spotted something neat about this message. If you take the first letter from each sentence, they spell out the word “Shadow.” And wouldn’t you know it, rumor has it the next Tomb Raider game will be known as Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Of course, there’s also the possibility that someone in Square Enix’s PR department is just messing with us and the game will be titled something else entirely.

Cellar Door’s Full Metal Furies will be released for the PC and Xbox One on January 17

Cellar Door Games, the developer responsible for Rogue Legacy, has announced a release date for their next game. Full Metal Furies is a retro-styled brawler that’ll be available for the PC and Xbox One on January 17 as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, and Cellar Door’s Kenny Lee had a lot to say about its modern design on the Xbox Wire:

FMF holds a special place in our hearts because its beginnings stem back more than 10 years ago, before our company, Cellar Door Games, even existed. Being ’80s babies, we grew up in the arcades with brawlers like Double Dragon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade. It was truly the golden age of brawlers and beat-em-ups, but since then the genre has struggled to reach contemporary audiences. It was heartbreaking to see these types of games stagnate, so we’ve known for a long time that we wanted to do something about it.

For Full Metal Furies, we tried to tackle everything we thought was a problem. From the big ticket items like adding a proper story and implementing deeper combat systems, to the more minute issues such as standing at the edge of the screen and just punching enemies off-camera.

It is a massive laundry list of changes, big and small, and while we could bullet-point every single thing that we feel makes FMF special, who’d read it? (By the way, if you want a list, let us know and we’ll totally give it to you).

To celebrate the official release date announcement, Cellar Door also uploaded a new trailer for Full Metal Furies, and it’s been embedded above.

Atlus will release Dragon’s Crown Pro in North America in Spring 2018

Atlus has announced plans to bring Dragon’s Crown, a bizarre beat ’em up that was originally released for the PS3 and Vita in 2013, to the PS4 in Spring 2018.

The remaster will be known as Dragon’s Crown Pro, and it’ll include PS4 Pro support, a newly recorded orchestral soundtrack, English and Japanese audio options, cross-play and cross-save compatibility with the PS3/Vita version, and the Storyteller Voice Pack DLC:

Features

  • Visuals Fit for an Ancient Dragon – With beautifully refined artwork and 4K resolution support, Vanillaware’s signature art style will come alive as you bludgeon, cleave, shoot, and loot through the dungeons of Hydeland.
  • A Rousing Adventurer’s Soundtrack – A newly recorded soundtrack by fabled composer Hitoshi Sakimoto, supported by a live orchestra, will accompany daring treasure hunters on their search for the Dragon’s Crown.
  • Glorious Presentation – Rejoice because English and Japanese audio options will now be available! Plus, game text will be localized in French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
  • All the Royal Bells and Whistles – If you already own Dragon’s Crown, your saves won’t go to waste. There will be online cross-play and cross-save compatibility with existing PS3 and Vita versions. Oh, and all patches, features, and the Storyteller Voice Pack DLC from the original game will be included!
  • Four Player Frenzy – With the fun local couch co-op and online multiplayer you remember, up to four players can experience countless hours battling together.

Overview
As with the original release, Dragon’s Crown Pro features groups of heroes that face dreadful challenges in the labyrinthine dungeons surrounding the medieval fantasy kingdom of Hydeland. As they explore deeper into the dungeons, non-player characters such as Samuel the Adventurer’s Guild leader and Lucain, the wizard come in to play with quests and tasks to complete. Use six adventurers (Fighter, Dwarf, Amazon, Wizard, Elf, and Sorceress) and their unique abilities to unravel the story behind the ultimate treasure, the Dragon’s Crown.

We were pretty big fans of Dragon’s Crown the first time around, and if you’re interested in trying out Dragon’s Crown Pro this weekend, it’ll be playable at Sony’s PlayStation Experience, which will be held on December 9th and 10th in Anaheim.

Nintendo will re-release Wii and GameCube titles for Nvidia Shield in China

Nintendo began working with Nvidia several years ago, when the consolemaker was looking for a company to provide a graphical kick for their “NX” concept. In time, the NX would be revealed as the Nintendo Switch, and Nvidia confirmed the console would be powered by its popular Tegra chip. Today, Nintendo returned the favor in a surprising announcement to come out of China.

Speaking to Engadget, Nvidia has revealed that Nintendo will release remastered versions of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Punch-Out!! for the Nvidia Shield microconsole in China. Other games from Nintendo’s GameCube and Wii catalogs will be released for the Shield in the future… including Super Mario Galaxy.

Extending the business relationship that brought Nvidia technology to Nintendo Switch, some of Nintendo’s most beloved Wii and Nintendo GameCube titles are officially headed to China for the first time. New Super Mario Bros. Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Punch-Out!! are remastered in 1080p and available on the China version of Nvidia Shield, released today.

Because the Shield is so similar to the Switch, this deal might give us a window into Nintendo plans for its back catalog on the Switch. But that’s conversation for another time.
