Daily Scoop: October 17, 2013 – I’m back!
Hello there, friendly readers! I’ve been away for a few days – my good friends (and our former writers!) Ryan Littlefield and Brianne Galli came to Philadelphia to stay with us, and we had a blast! We played video games, ate junk food, and visited important landmarks. Then yesterday I was on a panel at the Grassroots Game Conference. It was amazing! But now I’m back, and ready to bring you some great deals and shirts, as always.
First up: deals! There’s a brand new Humble Bundle right now – the Humble Bundle with Android 7. Pay what you want for Ticket to Ride, Greed Corp, Incredipede, and Anodyne; pay more than the average to get Worms Reloaded and The Bard’s Tale. The soundtracks are included as well!
There are some great deals happening over at Amazon right now. The console version of Diablo III is $10 off right now. This blows the PC version out of the water and is definitely worth the money! Another personal favorite, Sleeping Dogs, is just $18.99 right now. And while I haven’t played it yet, $29.99 seems like a great price for Metro Last Light (it’s only $19.99 on PC).
And now, for the moment you’ve been waiting for: t-shirts! There are only two, but they’re both good ones… (more…)

Mass Effect 4 WON’T feature Shepard at all

Mass Effect, BioWare’s sci-fi juggernaut, has been the developer’s flagship franchise for the last few years. The first installment was released in 2007 and five years (and two additional games) later, the series reached a climactic ending that brought the entire story to a very final conclusion. SPOILERS FOLLOW.
The protagonist for the entire series, the character through whom players experienced every moment of every event in every game was forced to sacrifice his or herself to end the threat of the Reaper Invasion. In almost every ending, Commander Shepard dies. This left many wondering about the future of the franchise. The Mass Effect name seemed too powerful for BioWare to simply let go of the intellectual property, but if there were another Mass Effect game, when would it take place? Would it be a prequel? Or would players simply assume the role of another character? Certainly there were plenty of viable companions who could see their own titles, particularly Garrus Vakarian or Liara T’Soni. Complex recently posted an interview with Mac Walter, the man behind most of the content in the Mass Effect universe, and what the writer had to say was not what many gamers wanted to hear.
When asked explicitly about the direction of the next Mass Effect installment, the currently untitled Mass Effect 4, Walter revealed that the plan was “to tell a story that doesn’t relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever.” He went on to add that regardless of what happened, the most important thing to the team was to make sure that it still felt like a Mass Effect game, instead of a spin-off. And for anyone thinking that perhaps a story could still be told from Garrus’s perspective, a story that doesn’t relate to any of the Shepard events, Walter concluded that the next game would be “without the Shepard character or the Shepard-specific companions.”
So it seems that the next Mass Effect will start from scratch, though Walter did discuss his current project, a 13-issue comic called Mass Effect: Foundation. He mentioned that he couldn’t imagine not using “the comics as a companion” with the fourth Mass Effect installment. Fans who wish to familiarize themselves with the next step in the Mass Effect universe may want to pick up the comics to find out what’s in store.

5 Indie Games for PS4 to Spend Your Watch Dogs Money On

Gamers, please accept my apology. I didn’t mean to; it was a complete mistake. I take all the blame, and I hope that one day you will be able to find it in your heart to forgive me.
I pre-ordered Watch Dogs a few days ago.
I know, I know. If only I hadn’t pre-ordered the game, I wouldn’t have jinxed the whole thing, and the game never would have been delayed. Believe me; I’m just as devastated as you. Now my PS4 lineup will be without the title that I was looking forward to most. But hey – I don’t like to dwell on the past. I’m a half-full kind of guy. So I wiped my tears and got to searching for the next great next-gen game. And you know what I found? It looks like some of the best games won’t be coming from hundred-developer teams and multi-million dollar budgets. My friends, this generation is all about the indies.
While doing my research on what PS4 launch game to get to while I wait for Watch Dogs, I was a bit let down. Sure, there are some good choices, like Call of Duty: Ghosts and Killzone: Shadow Fall, but those didn’t really jump out at me. I’m already getting Knack, and I don’t have too deep an interest in sports or racing games. It was only when I started perusing the downloadable titles that I really started to get excited. And you should too. So here’s just a few upcoming PS4 independent games to use that Watch Dogs money on. (more…)

The title will be free-to-play, and feature Angry Birds Telepod support and upgradable karts. Angry Birds Go! doesn’t race to mobile devices until December 11, but in the meantime, you can get a birds-eye view of the new trailer right here.
Namco Bandai trademarks Soul Calibur: Unbreakable Soul in US

The soul still burns.
It’s looking more and more likely that Namco Bandai is prepping a new Soul Calibur announcement. Yesterday, the publisher submitted a trademark application for a game known as “Soul Calibur: Unbreakable Soul” with the US Patent and Trademark Office. Right now, all we know is that the trademark applies to “computer game software” and also includes a section stating that the game will include online play.
Namco Bandai filed an identical trademark application with the Trademarks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union several weeks ago. So while we’re still waiting on an official announcement, this is definitely more than a rumor.

God of War: Ascension, The Wolf Among Us, more added to PS Store

Kratos returns (again) as God of War: Ascension is now available to download from the PlayStation Store. I could have sworn this happened months ago, but the weekly PlayStation Store update doesn’t lie. Also available this week is the first episode of Telltale’s latest episodic adventure series, The Wolf Among Us. The Fables spinoff stars The Big Bad Wolf and he’s going to huff and puff and…
…let you know that hunting sim Cabela’s African Adventures, horse racing sim Champion Jockey, and game show sim Who Wants to Be a Millionaire: Special Edition are also available as PS3 downloads today.
Over on the Vita, Activision has added Angry Birds Trilogy to the PlayStation Store and XSEED has released their prison-set action RPG Valhalla Knights 3.
More information on all of these games are available after the break and a full rundown of this week’s new game add-ons is available at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

Kickstart This! The Opulent October Edition

October, the month where towns and shops put up Christmas decorations before people have even celebrated Halloween, when you remember that you have a heating system that has lain dormant all summer. And also the celebration of when I crawled out of the womb, a video game controller already in my hand (all birthday presents are welcome). But rather than spend your money on me, or hoarding it for a last minute Christmas Eve rush, instead why not channel the spirit of Tam o’ Shanter and dance with a strange devil in the midnight oil. And by this I mean give a nice game developer a Kickstarter donation.
There are five projects shaking their Starbuck-emblazoned begging cup at you, starting with the video game version of an old homeless man, ColecoVision. There is also Japanese Action RPG Reborn, Zombie RTS Undead Overload, the Lovecraftian 2D adventure game Mark of the Old Ones, and last but not least, the beautiful and unique Knite and the Ghost Lights.
Let’s go. (more…)
