Watch Dogs hacks its way into our hearts as the best-selling game of May 2014

We were already pretty aware of the fact that a lot of copies of Watch Dogs and Mario Kart 8 were sold in the last week of May. Now, the NPD Group has made it official by releasing their official report of the best-selling games of May 2014.
Not surprisingly, Watch Dogs took the gold while Mario Kart 8 had to settle for the silver. The top ten was populated by several other May releases including Wolfenstein: The New Order (#4) and Kirby: Triple Deluxe (#9). A retail release of Minecraft on the PS3 also pushed that game back into the top five (#5, to be exact).
According to Joystiq, the NPD Group also confirmed that the PS4 has outsold the Xbox One for the fifth straight month. You can view the complete top ten list from the month of May after the break. (more…)

Mario Kart 8 Review: Nintendo Is (Almost) Firing On All Cylinders With This Sequel

It’s a safe bet that the gaming public has some idea what to expect from a game whose title ends in a numeral that many people subconsciously pair with the phrase “Is Enough.” Such is the case with Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8. At a time in the franchise’s lifecycle when most publishers would attempt to hide how long the series has been running with a clever subtitle, Nintendo comes right out and says, “Yeah, this is the eighth Mario Kart game, you wanna make something of it?” (more…)

Daily Scoop: June 16, 2014 – Monday’s back
Hey, it’s Monday again! Did you spend the weekend playing video games? I didn’t play nearly as many as I’d hoped, but I think that’s how I feel pretty much every weekend! I did get to spend some quality time with the family for Father’s Day, so that was fun. Oh, and I played Scattergories with them, which was a blast!
Let’s talk about deals! Steam’s got a great Daily Deal – it’s Just Cause 2 for the incredibly cheap $2.99. The Humble Store also has some really great sales. Planetary Annihilation is $24.99, FTL: Advanced Edition is $6.99, Age of Fear 2: The Chaos Lord is $9.99, and Octodad is $8.99. Scoop ’em up!
And now, some t-shirts!

Angry Birds Transformers will roll out on mobile devices this Fall
I am probably more excited for this than I should be, but Rovio and Hasbro have just announced they will collaborate on Angry Birds Transformers, a crossover game which will be released for mobile devices this Fall. The two companies will also team up to produce a variety of consumer merchandise (toys, t-shirts, and the like) and a line of Telepods based on Angry Birds Transformers.
“We’re really excited to combine the iconic Transformers universe with the quirky world of Angry Birds,” said Blanca Juti, Chief Marketing Officer of Rovio. “This mash-up is going to appeal to both those who grew up with the brand in the 80s, as well as fans of the brand today. People are going to love it!”
Angry Birds Transformers will most likely be based on the “Generation 1” continuity, as the teaser image provided by Rovio is a parody of the 20th Anniversary poster for Transformers: The Movie. But if you’ll allow me to nerd it up for a minute, the Deceptihog in the mech suit in the bottom right corner should be an Autobird as that suit belongs to Daniel, a human supporter of the Autobots, in the film.
Yeah, more excited than I should be.

Weekly Warp-Up: The A-Z of E3 2014
No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…
It looks like another E3 Expo has come to an end. We’ll all get together again next year in Los Angeles (June 16-18, to be exact) for another round of gabbing about gaming’s future. But for now, it’s time to talk about all the huge games that were on display at the 2014 E3 Expo. Though, to be fair, a lot of the games presented this year may show up at next year’s show too as a lot of this year’s biggest announcements have 2015 release dates.
Anyway, here it is, our annual list of everything E3. A link to every article for every game we covered is available after the break. (more…)
New Releases: EA Sports UFC, Tropico 5

With video game fans the world over still nursing E3 hangovers, it makes a lot of sense that the game publishers have decided to hold off on retail releases for another week.
But nothing can stop Electronic Arts and their EA Sports label is finally ready to release the first EA-branded UFC game, EA Sports UFC. It’ll be available for the PS4 and Xbox One and players who pre-order will receive early access to Bruce Lee.
Also available this week is the latest attempt by El Presidente to conquer his tropical island in the PC edition of Tropico 5.
Now I want to see someone create Fidel Castro in EA Sports UFC’s Create-A-Fighter mode and pit him against Bruce Lee.
Nintendo is planning side-scrolling and first-person Metroid games
While there was no talk of the Metroid franchise at E3, Stephen Totilo of Kotaku had an interesting interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Shinya Takahashi of Nintendo. Totilo pointedly asked them what was going on with the Metroid franchise, and what fans could hope to expect. Miyamoto deferred to Takahashi, who currently works with the creators and directors from the Metroid series. Takahashi had this to say:
“So it has been a while since we released the last one and we’re having discussions internally about what we can do next. So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we’ll be able to share something about them.”
This seems to indicate that a new game, or at least a new announcement, might be coming to us soon (perhaps during Tokyo Game Show?).
When asked by Totilo which one they preferred, Takahashi said he liked them both, and Miyamoto said he prefers Prime. I think this entire conversation is adorable.

Meet Pagan Min in the Far Cry 4 E3 trailer
At E3 2014, Ubisoft showed off the big villain, Pagan Min, from their upcoming game, Far Cry 4. Min is terrifying, which makes sense, seeing as he’s the dictator of Kyrat. The country is currently in a civil war trying to overthrow him, and you show up at a really bad time.
Far Cry 4 will be out November 18 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
