Kickstart This! The Organic Monochrome Augmented Reality Edition

Summer is in full swing, like a party at Jay Gatsby’s house. While we are currently in the middle of a month of suffering thanks to a gaming drought, there’s always new opportunities on Kickstarter. This month, choose whether to join Team Meat or Team Cheese in Organic Panic, explore the chilling dystopia of Monochroma, or get your steampunk on in turn-based strategy Tooth and Cog.

Taking a slight detour from video games themselves, there is also the augmented reality board game Darkling Plain, a new open-source programmable handheld console in the FEZ Game-O, and finally, Double Jump, a novel about a man who finds himself in a world governed by video game logic.

Let’s jump right in! (more…)

Thomas Was Alone Review: How to Relate to Shapes

thomaswasalone-header

Thomas Was Alone is a lovely little puzzle game in which you get to play as different shapes. Each shape has a different power – whether it’s jumping far, floating on liquid, or being able to walk on the ceiling. The shapes must work together to clear each stage, solving puzzles and helping each other get through areas – sometimes by physically carrying one another, and other times by pressing buttons to open up new areas. It may sound boring, but I can assure you, this tiny game is anything but boring – in fact, there’s a huge and beautiful game experience tied into its little frame. (more…)

The Starship Damrey Review: A Clever, Fun, and Terrifying Space Puzzler

starshipdamrey-header

The Starship Damrey is the first game to be released in America from Level-5’s Guild02 collection, their second set of 3DS collaborations with some of Japan’s most acclaimed developers. You might remember such games as Liberation Maiden, Aero Porter, and Crimson Shroud from Guild01, and the quality hasn’t wavered at all in this first installment of Guild02. Designed by Kazuya Asano and written by Takemaru Abiko, creators of text-based adventures in Japan, The Starship Damrey is something of a survival horror puzzle game, devilishly elusive and refreshingly difficult and frightening. Free of tutorials or any kind of explanation at all, the player is thrown into the story, forced to fight the claustrophobia of being trapped in a cold sleep chamber on the aforementioned starship, with only their wits to solve the mystery. Monaco Review: What’s Yours Is Mine… But Not If I Go Alone

monaco-header

Monaco is an indie game by Pocketwatch Games, in which you and your fellow professional criminals spend some quality time together breaking out of – and into – various facilities. The game is top-down and done in simple graphics, with large pixelated characters and backgrounds. You can choose to take on each mission alone, choosing which character you want to play as, or team up with up to three other people, each of whom can play someone different. The multiplayer aspects of the game are a complete blast, but taking on the game solo can be a frustrating affair. (more…)

DARE To Read This Interview With the Co-Creator of Don’t Play With Drugs: The Game

dontplaywithdrugs-logoA few months ago, I got my hands on a terrific card game called Don’t Play With Drugs. It’s frenetic, fun, and fast – you can play a game in five minutes, meaning you can either play a marathon of it, play quick rounds of it in between setting up other board games, or even play it while your Dungeon Master is off taking a break. Right After Then, the company behind the game, did a limited run earlier this year, but fear not – they have a Kickstarter running now, which you should absolutely back. I caught up with the one of the co-creators, Jordan Martin, and asked him a few questions about the game, the Kickstarter, and what else they have in the works. (more…)

Remember Me Review: Beauty and Innovation Marred by Misogyny

rememberme-header

Remember Me, developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Capcom, snuck up on me earlier this month. It’s a third-person action-adventure game which relies heavily on melee combat. From the outset, it seemed to be the full package, with stunning visuals, a fascinating female lead character, and a compelling story. But is it a game worth remembering, or a game you’d rather soon forget? (more…)
