No Man’s Sky “Foundation Update” is now available… and it includes a lot of new content

As promised, Hello Games has released the “Foundation Update” (Version 1.1) for No Man’s Sky. The update, which will be the first of many free updates, includes all of the new base-building options the developer talked about on Friday… along with a few surprises.

In addition to building a homestead, Version 1.1 of No Man’s Sky will allow players to create a Hydroponic Lab within their base and grow different plants. These plants will provide “a steady supply of resources” and eventually lead to the discovery of new resource elements. And for players who want to venture away from their base, they’ll be able to make camp anywhere with Save Points and color-coded Waypoints.

However, if you’d prefer to always be on the move, players can purchase a Freighter to move large amounts of resources across the galaxy. Freighters can also be crewed by three other characters to research new technologies. And speaking of resources, the “Foundation Update” will also add new biome and star-specific resource types to the game, as well as a simplified user interface.

But the biggest change to No Man’s Sky is the addition of three new game modes, including a brutal (and “much more challenging”) Survival Mode:

  • Normal Mode is the original chilled exploration experience
  • Creative Mode allows players to explore the universe without limits, and build a huge base
  • Survival Mode really changes the game, creating a much more challenging endurance experience

A trailer offering more details about No Man’s Sky’s “Foundation Update” is embedded above, and the full Patch Notes can be found at the game’s official website.

New Retail Releases: Final Fantasy XV, Super Mario Maker For 3DS, Steep, More

newreleases112916

After ten years of hard work (and a name change and a platform shift), Square Enix is finally ready to unleash Final Fantasy XV on the world. Set to launch this week for the PS4 and Xbox One, the game follows Noctis and his friends in a world of magic and technology that’s on the brink of war. It’s a pretty standard setting for the Final Fantasy franchise, but its epic development period certainly adds an extra layer of intrigue to things.

A number of other games will be available on store shelves this week, but none of them have the same level of hype.

Of course, that’s probably exactly how Nintendo would like fans to look at Super Mario Maker For Nintendo 3DS. The level editor is slightly shrunk down from its Wii U debut (levels can no longer be uploaded online, for example), but players will still be able share levels locally, and the brand new Medal Challenge looks interesting.

Ubisoft has a trio of new games available in stores this including the extreme sports simulation Steep (which includes skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, and wingsuiting) for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Open world hackathon Watch Dogs 2 will make its PC debut this week, and The Crew: Ultimate Edition will collect the original game and all of its downloadable content into a single package on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Finally this week, PQube will release the time-bending visual novel SteinsGate 0 for the PS4 and Vita.

The full list of this week’s new retail releases can be found after the break. (more…)

Hello Games will release major “Foundation Update” for No Man’s Sky next week

nomanssky-header

It’s been a rough road for No Man’s Sky, and developer Hello Games, since its launch back in August. Many fans felt cheated by drastic departures the final game took from early teaser trailers and promises made by Director Sean Murray. Others, like our own Mike Ryan, were more forgiving, but he also found No Man’s Sky to be just average.

However, massive changes are coming to No Man’s Sky, beginning with a major update scheduled to launch this week. Known as the “Foundation Update,” Hello Games discussed how it’ll serve as a base for future updates to the game on their official website:

We’re calling it The Foundation Update, because we have added the foundations of base building, and also because this is putting in place a foundation for things to come.

The message from Hello Games only lightly brushed up against the public’s mostly negative reaction to No Man’s Sky, but the team also said they are listening to fan feedback and will use it to shape the game going forward:

In the nine weeks since then our small team has been hard at work on development, testing and certification for the Foundation Update. It won’t be our biggest update, but it is the start of something.

The discussion around No Man’s Sky since release has been intense and dramatic. We have been quiet, but we are listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about. Positive or negative feedback, you have been heard and that will truly help to make this a better game for everyone.

And they closed their first communication in a very long time with a promise that bigger things are on the way: “This update will be the first small step in a longer journey.”

Capcom has Street Fighter V updates “planned out as far as 2020”

streetfighterv-header

Capcom recently wrapped up Street Fighter V‘s 2016 Season Pass in September, and the publisher plans to unveil Akuma, the first character from the 2017 Season, at next week’s PlayStation Experience event in Anaheim. But what happens after that?

In a new interview with Famitsu (helpfully translated by EventHubs), Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono and Tomoaki Ayano confirmed the company has development updates (and possibly new fighters) mapped out until 2020:

Famitsu: So, moving back to the earlier subject, how far does your current road map for Street Fighter V development go?

Ono: It’s not just a one-to-two year thing. We’re looking pretty far ahead… We’ve planned out as far as 2020 or so.

Ayano: Street Fighter V is a title we’re adding on to as it goes along, so we’re working on it while planning ahead on the best way to develop it further.

Street Fighter IV launched for consoles in 2009 and ultimately received five years worth of updates, so this type of devotion to a single game is not unusual for Capcom or the Street Fighter franchise.

Shop Steam’s Autumn Sale and nominate your favorite games for the first-ever Steam Awards

steam_logoSteam kicked off their Autumn Sale this morning, and if you’re not interested in waiting for Black Friday, you should definitely check it out. The online storefront is offering big discounts all this week on popular franchises such as The Elder Scrolls, Batman: Arkham, Grand Theft Auto, Civilization, and many more.

Valve also announced the creation of The Steam Awards today, which will give the Steam Community a chance to nominate their favorite games in eight wide-ranging categories:

The “Test of Time” Award
This Award is for the game that is just as good today as the day you first played it. Newer games may come out, but it doesn’t matter… you’ll always come back to play this one.

The “I’m Not Crying, There’s Something In My Eye” Award
Games are fun. But sometimes games become more than that, and touch you in a way you weren’t expecting. This Award celebrates the game that blindsided you emotionally. You weren’t expecting to cry. It wasn’t in the plan. But it happened none the less.

The “Just 5 More Minutes” Award
You have an early day tomorrow. You need to get some sleep, so you’re just going finish one more thing before you decide to tuck in for the night. Just one more. Wait, one more. What’s that you say? It’s 2:30 AM? This Award is for the game that keeps you playing late.

The “Whoooaaaaaaa, Dude” Award
Some games melt your face. Maybe it was a crazy plot twist. Maybe you just got your wisdom teeth removed. Either way, this game BLOWS YOUR MIND.

The “Villain Most In Need Of A Hug” Award
Some people just need a hug.

The “Game Within A Game” Award
Kinder Eggs. Peanut Butter Cups. Jelly Donuts. All great things stuffed with other great things. Like a mighty turducken, this Award celebrates the best mini game hidden within another game.

The “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award” Award
This title didn’t have a huge marketing machine behind it, but you found it and loved it. Then you told your friends about it. And they loved it. And now that little game that could is about to win an Award… but always remember: you totally found it first.

The “Best Use Of A Farm Animal” Award
Animals are rad and almost any game is better for including them. However this game used a farm animal in the best way possible.

The “We Didn’t Think Of Everything” Award
There are as many great ideas for Awards as there are great games to play. And so we turn to the Steam Awards Selection Committee to come up with their own category and nominee. Senior members of the Selection Committee will review the write-in entries and create an entirely new category based on the feedback provided. (Name Pending Selection Committee Decision)

Nominations for The Steam Awards will be accepted until Tuesday, November 29, and the final vote will be held sometime in December.
