Kickstart This! Escape from Pleasure Planet

This month, Kickstarter faced one of its biggest challenges in the form of Keiji Inafune’s Mighty No. 9, his long-gestating Mega Man clone that raised just shy of $4 million back in 2013. Three years later, the massive amount money hurled at the game seems excessive, as it was poorly received by both critics and players alike. Were backers naive to think that the final game would look and play as gorgeously as the original concept? While companies like Nintendo manage to successfully trade on nostalgia, it seems this homage to Inafune’s beloved character has forgotten to add anything new into the mix, leaving players with a bland, uninspiring journey. The reception was not surprising, but the reaction made me look at Kickstarter with a more critical eye.

I had found a great game called Ikenfell to feature, but it managed to achieve its funding days before I posted, and has now achieved double its initial target. This left me to trawl through a myriad of projects whose campaigns were either dull, confusing, or tragically launched in a premature state. Rather than single one out, I’ll go through a handful to underline exactly what I mean.

Take Rise of the Infection: it has no video; its poster is a stock image of a city; and upon reading the project entry, I found it had no game whatsoever. The developer, Joseph Rottet, teases a promise of a game “that starts as the world ends… with fully destructible environments, creature decay, and RPG elements.” And yet, there are no assets here at all… there’s just a pitch. It is a Kickstarter project in the purest form, as he is asking the world to invest $100,000 in an idea, and to give college graduates an opportunity to show their skills. He is not looking for funding for a game, as is promised; he is looking to fund a company that will then make this game in five years.

Five years.

This one project depressed me on a whole other level, because it is essentially someone asking for money in exchange for literally nothing. No work has been put into this idea, no assets have been created, no pitch has been recorded… absolutely nothing. The world seems to be rewarding the effort in kind, with zero donations thus far.

Is it a con? Who knows. Kickstarter has had its fair share of controversial projects, both funded and cancelled, which were later found to be the poorly conceived abominations spawned from less than reputable individuals. Yet there are other projects in a similar state to this one. Indigo Park has no video, and its handful of screenshots look fake, with the protagonist Laura placed in environments that do not match the style of the character.

At this point, I stopped looking at Kickstarter. It was becoming an irritation, a sea of badly run campaigns that may or may not be funding someone’s lavish lifestyle, while the rewards I would receive may later prove to be inferior, if I received anything at all.

And yet, I still believe in the notion of crowdfunding. I guess we have to take the good with the bad, and trust our own judgement, but if we cannot rely on industry veterans like Inafune to deliver what they promised, who can we trust?

The answer, it seems, is an Australian bloke named Luke Miller. (more…)

Here’s a new CoD: Black Ops III Descent DLC Pack trailer ahead of tomorrow’s launch

Call of Duty: Black Ops III players on the PS4 will be able to download the Descent DLC Pack beginning tomorrow… which makes it the perfect time for Activision to release a trailer focusing on the four new multiplayer maps.

With the Descent DLC Pack, players will be able to battle it out in “Empire” (“an authentic Roman villa”), “Cryogen” (a futuristic prison heavily inspired by Demolition Man), “Rumble” (a stadium built for fights between giant robots), and “Berserk” (“a Viking village frozen in time”).

If you’re more interested in the new Zombies map, you might want to know that Sid Shuman of the PlayStation Blog will invite Treyarch’s Director of Zombies, Jason Blundell, to his studio for a special livestream tomorrow at 1:00 PM (Eastern Time).

The Descent DLC Pack will also be available for download on the PC and Xbox One sometime in August.

falloutshelter-header

Bethesda has good news for everyone who wants to play Fallout Shelter on their PC… the apocalyptic survival sim will be available to download beginning on June 14.

The publisher also confirmed that the game’s 1.6 update, which was announced during Bethesda’s E3 Press Conference this year, will be available on Thursday as well. The 1.6 update was described as the “really big one” and will include never-before-seen locations, characters, enemies, and a brand new series of Quests.

It’s unknown exactly how the PC version might differ from the currently-available mobile edition, but we’ll find out soon enough.

New Retail Releases: Ghostbusters, Song of the Deep, Monster Hunter Generations, More

newreleases071216

I ain’t afraid of no monsters! And it’s a good thing too, because Capcom will launch the latest game in the Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Generations, for the 3DS this week. Players will be able to go on hundreds of quests as they hunt a new crop of monstrous bosses by themselves or in a group with up to three friends in co-op multiplayer mode.

Monsters of the ocean haunt Insomniac’s side-scrolling Song of the Deep, a new “MetroidVania” available this week for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. As the first game published by GameStop’s GameTrust label, Song of the Deep will introduce players to Merryn, a young girl who goes under the sea to rescue her missing father.

Ghosts and zombies are monsters too, and I’m not afraid of them either… Activision will release Ghostbusters, a tie-in to the upcoming movie starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, for the PS4 and Xbox One. And Capcom will re-release Resident Evil 5 for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Finally this week, Sega will launch 7th Dragon III: Code VFD, the first game in the RPG franchise to be released outside of Japan, for the 3DS.

Turtle Rock announces “vigorous overhaul” for Evolve as it goes free-to-play on PC

evolve-header

Even though it sold several million copies, Evolve more or less disappeared from the public eye after its release in early 2015. A confusing (and pricey) DLC structure seems to have pushed away almost everyone that was enamored by the game after its 2014 debut at PAX East, or its subsequent pre-release showings at E3 or Gamescom.

But Turtle Rock wants to revitalize their 4v1 shooter, and they’re going to start by making Evolve a free-to-play game on the PC beginning tomorrow, July 7. In addition to rebalancing the Hunter classes and making improvements to the maps, Turtle Rock wrote on their Community Forum that they plan to use this “Beta” relaunch as a testing ground for weekly updates to Evolve:

Here’s how it’s going to work: We’re going to make Evolve free on PC as a Beta starting on July 7. This is going to allow us to hit our new server infrastructure really hard and we need your help testing. Stuff could break, and that’s our hope, because that will give us time to improve things as we go. We’ll parse out major Beta revisions, updates and features over a period of weeks and months — a plan we’re going to continually communicate here. This allows us to test new features and major changes to make our game more accessible and ever closer to the joy we saw when we first showed our baby to the world. Just as importantly, this Beta plan gives us the flexibility and time we need to keep fixing bugs and making Evolve more stable.

Players who purchased Evolve before it went free-to-play will be given “Founder” status and periodically receive “gifts, rewards, and special access” from Turtle Rock. And according to another post by Turtle Rock, the free-to-play “Beta” will start on the PC, but the goal is to bring to the PS4 and Xbox One as well.

Turtle Rock will host a huge livestream detailing the changes coming to Evolve on Twitch tomorrow at noon (Eastern Time).

Konami has mostly retreated from PC and console development in recent years, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 is currently the only game they have scheduled for release in 2016.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild named E3 2016’s “Best of Show” by Game Critics Awards

thelegendofzeldabreathofthewild-header

The Game Critics Awards has handed out their annual “Best of E3” honors for this year’s show, and unsurprisingly, Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was named “Best of Show.” The massive open-air game also took home awards for “Best Console Game” and “Best Action/Adventure Game.”

Even though Battlefield 1 secured the most nominations, only one other game was able to collect more than a single award, and that was Civilization VI, which was named “Best PC Game” and “Best Strategy Game.” This year’s “Special Commendation for Graphics” went to Sony’s God of War reboot.

All told, 13 games (and the PlayStation VR headset, which won for “Best Hardware”) were honored this year by the Game Critics Awards. The full list of winners can be found after the break. (more…)

Every game published by Microsoft will be released with an Xbox Play Anywhere option

microsoftgamestudios-logo

Way back in 2003, Microsoft released Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC, and followed it up with a PC port for Halo 2 in 2007. Not counting the Spartan spinoff games, these are the only two titles in the Halo franchise to ever be released for the PC. But it looks like PC players might get to revisit the franchise again in the not-too-distant future.

Yusuf Mehdi, the Vice President of the Windows and Devices Group, knows that fans want the franchise to continue on the PC, and he might just grant them their wish. In a new post on the Windows Blog, Mehdi has confirmed that all future Microsoft-published games will be released as part of the Xbox Play Anywhere program, meaning that purchasers will receive a copy of the game for the Xbox One and Windows 10.

With the Xbox Play Anywhere program, you can buy a game once and play on your Windows 10 PC and Xbox One with shared progress, shared game saves and shared achievements. Every new title published from Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store.

Halo 6, the next mainline entry in the franchise, was announced in 2011 as part of a “new trilogy” alongside Halo 4 and Halo 5: Guardians. It’s unknown when it’ll be released (or even re-announced), but unless Microsoft exempts it from the Xbox Play Anywhere program, we now know it’ll be available for the Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs.

In the more immediate future, Microsoft has a number of Xbox Play Anywhere titles planned for the Fall including Gears of War 4, Dead Rising 4, Forza Horizon 3, and ReCore.
