Comcept closes out “Mighty May” with Mighty No. 9 gameplay trailer

Comcept has released a handful of trailers showcasing their progress on Mighty No. 9 since the completion of the Kickstarter campaign last Fall. But today’s new gameplay trailer, released to celebrate the end of “Mighty May,” is the most impressive yet. You might even say it is mega cool, man.

The trailer focuses on the icy locale that Mighty No. 2 calls home and the more industrial digs of Mighty No. 5. And unlike the previous “work-in-progress” trailers, this one features some beautiful backgrounds and gorgeous graphical effects, as well as a ton of enemies and environmental objects. Basically, it’s starting to look like a finished game.

According to Comcept, development on Mighty No. 9 will be completed over the course of the next 12 months and we should all be able to get our hands on it in Spring 2015. And I do mean all as Mighty No. 9 is in development for the 3DS, PC (Windows, Mac, Linux), PS3, PS4, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

CoD: Ghosts next DLC, Invasion, coming to Xbox One, Xbox 360 next week

Activision and Infinity Ward have unveiled the Invasion Map Pack, the next downloadable expansion for Call of Duty: Ghosts. As always, the Invasion Map Pack will add four new maps and the next chapter of Extinction Mode to the game. This time, players will be able to battle killer mariachis in “Departed,” trigger booby-trapped pyramids in “Pharaoh,” and unearth angry pirate ghosts in “Mutiny.” The final map, “Favela,” is a recreation of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 map of the same name.

The Invasion Map Pack will be available to download from the Xbox Live Store this Tuesday, June 3, for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. As with all Call of Duty DLC, Season Pass owners will be able to grab the pack for free while everyone else will have to shell out $14.99. The Invasion Map Pack will likely be made available to PC, PS3, and PS4 players sometime in early July.

Check out the trailer above for a sneak peek at the new maps found in the Invasion Map Pack. We’ve also got an in-depth description of each map, straight from Activision, available after the break. (more…)

Bethesda unveils BattleCry, a team-based melee combat game

Many people believe that kings of old used to wage war not with swords and soldiers, but on the battlefield of the chess board. Bethesda’s BattleCry Studios has taken this idea and expanded upon it with their debut project, a 32-player team-based melee combat game also known as BattleCry.

BattleCry’s distinctive visual look was created by Viktor Antonov, the Art Director responsible for Half-Life 2‘s futuristic locales and Dishonored‘s medieval steampunk vibe. For BattleCry, Antonov has created a world where “gunpowder [was] banned following a cataclysmic world war at the dawn of the 20th century.” Like the chess-playing kings, “traditional warfare is now a relic of the past and all conflicts are settled head-on by elite teams of chosen warriors in sanctioned WarZones.” However, unlike the carved chessmen, these battles take place between trained warriors that live for battle.

Be sure to check out some of BattleCry’s characters in the trailer above (and especially be on the lookout for a pair of mustachioed circus strongmen) as well as a stylized look at the game’s melee combat system:

Choose your faction and progress your warrior through the ranks. Each rank unlocks new abilities and effects allowing deep strategic builds for your warrior on every level. Risk life and limb as the powerful Royal Marines or the fearless Cossacks in imaginative WarZones each designed to combine positioning, spacing and verticality to redefine your core combat experience. Fight with transformative melee and ranged weapons that harness iron and energy and eviscerate your opponents with swords that transform into shields, bows that can punch an arrow straight through an armored skull or electrocute your foes with high-powered blades crackling with electro-static energy.

Bethesda will release BattleCry as a free-to-play title for the PC sometime in 2015 and will reveal more details about the game’s world at this year’s E3 Expo.

Internet sleuths discover police-themed Battlefield Hardline on EA’s servers

battlefieldhardline-header

Battlefield Hardline is rumored to be the next game in the Battlefield series, according to a lot of research performed today by multiple Internet sleuths. Samit Sarkar over at Polygon packaged it all together nicely:

The leak began with the discovery on the Better Battlelog forums of an initialism for a Battlefield game, “BFH,” listed for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The forum poster also discovered four soldier classes: Enforcer, Mechanic, Operator and Professional.

After that, the logo above was posted on web developer Koen Vlaswinkel’s personal website, taken from the Battlelog website. He “and the Battlefield Daily Twitter account also posted artwork and icons that mention the two sides in the game, SWAT and Thieves, and modes such as Blood Money and Heist.” These images, including a riot shield, taser, handcuffs, money, and police vehicles, did nothing to dispel the rumor.

But wait – there’s more. Vlaswinkel also found proof that Visceral Games, the studio behind the Dead Space series, could be the studio developing the game. He “discovered an image of the word ‘visceral,'” which goes along with a report from earlier this year about a cops-and-robbers game codenamed Havana in development at Visceral.

I guess we’ll just have to wait until EA’s E3 press conference at 3:00 PM (Eastern Time) on June 9, and hope that the publisher will clear this up then.

UPDATE: EA has gone ahead and officially announced Battlefield Hardline. And it looks like we will learn more at this year’s E3 Expo.

Gearbox has released the full Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel gameplay video from PAX East 2014

This is the PAX East gameplay walkthrough of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel narrated by James Lopez, Associate Producer at Gearbox, and Joel Eschler, Producer at 2K Australia. It’s absolutely amazing. It’s got ice bullets, laser guns, oxygen kits, low gravity, butt-stomping, and, of course, blowing dudes off the surface of the (Australian?) moon and out into orbit. Oh, and there’s a vehicle named the Stingray, though we don’t get to see it in action. Boo.

The walkthrough is from Athena’s point of view, so you get to see her badass shield firsthand. Wilhelm and Claptrap are in the mix as well, with Nisha being the only playable character missing from the demo.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will be out this Fall on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Conan goes on a crime spree in Watch Dogs

Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs is now available in stores, but Conan O’Brien gave the world its first look at the game in last Thursday’s installment of his “Clueless Gamer” segment. If you’re unfamiliar with these segments, the title of them and the fact that it’s Conan should tell you all you need to know. Watch as he plays and reviews the game, imparting words of wisdom applicable not only to video games, but to life as well, such as “…the best way to solve a crime, sometimes, is to start a new crime.”

Enjoy!

Bethesda’s The Evil Within will miss its planned August release

After a slightly underwhelming PAX East 2014 presentation, Bethesda wants to give Shinji Mikami and his team at Tango Gameworks a bit more time to work on The Evil Within. The game, which was previously scheduled to launch on August 26, will now be released on October 21. The significance of moving into the middle of the Halloween season wasn’t lost on Bethesda’s marketing department either. They’ve released a new trailer, “Terrified,” which shows actual playtesters reacting to the game’s horrors.

“Nooooooooooooooo!”

Bethesda has also announced that everyone who pre-orders The Evil Within will receive access to the Fighting Chance Pack, a package of in-game items that will help Detective Castellanos better survive his fight with the undead. The Fighting Chance Pack will include:

  • Medical Kit – A vital health enhancement to enable Sebastian to fight on.
  • Green Gel – Used to upgrade Sebastian’s attributes.
  • Double Barrel Shotgun – A larger and more formidable shotgun than the regular shotgun, it’s useful for tight situations with multiple encroaching enemies.
  • Incendiary Agony Bolt – Capable of showering nearby enemies with damaging fire sparks.
  • Poison Agony Bolt – Will draw enemies towards it and poison them, allowing Sebastian time for a quick escape.

The Evil Within is in development for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One… so it should be available for your platform of choice this October (sorry Wii U owners).
