The Elder Scrolls Online will be released on April 4
Bethesda has announced that The Elder Scrolls Online will be released for the PC and Mac on April 4, 2014. In honor of the good news, Game Director Matt Firor has posted an update on ESO’s progress at ElderScrollsOnline.com:
Game development is coming along very well. We completed major systems development, and are focusing on making this the Elder Scrolls game you expect: polishing the hundreds and hundreds of hours of content, making combat even more fun and responsive, fixing quest issues, and much, much more. In fact, we plan on spending the next few months before launch reacting to the latest feedback from internal and external testers and gameplay data we have collected.
The Elder Scrolls Online will also be available for the PS4 and Xbox One, but console gamers will have to wait until June 2014 to explore the massive world the Zenimax Online team is building. But everyone can enjoy the game’s new trailer, “War in Cyrodiil,” which has been embedded above.

John Carmack reminisces on 20 years of Doom and what happened with Doom 4
On this day twenty years ago, gamers everywhere felt a sense of Doom that they haven’t been able to shake since. Doom may not have created the first person shooter genre, but it popularized it like no game had before. In fact, it made such an impression on gamers that other FPSs were known as “Doom clones” for years.
To mark this momentous occasion, John Carmack, one of the driving forces behind the creation of Doom at id Software, sat down with Wired‘s Chris Kohler to discuss the story behind one of his earliest accomplishments. The interview is certainly worth a read, and Carmack even gives readers an inside look at what went wrong with Doom 4 before his departure from id earlier this year:
“That’s something I can’t really go into much in detail. It’s been hard—one of the things that was a little bit surprising that you might not think so from the outside, but deciding exactly what the essence of Doom is, with this 20-year history, is a heck of a lot harder than you might think. You get multiple Doom fans that have different views of what the core essence of it is, and there’s been a design challenge through all of it.”
If you’re interested in the full story behind the making of Doom, I highly recommend checking out the book Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture by David Kushner. I also highly recommend playing some Doom today, and not just because its the 20th anniversary of its release. Everyday is a good day to play Doom.

The Walking Dead: Season 2 will launch on December 17

Telltale Games is bringing The Walking Dead: Season 2 to nearly every platform imaginable, which means a lot of people are struggling to keep the release date secret. But it looks like the people who run Steam and Microsoft’s Major Nelson aren’t very good secret keepers as both have leaked the release date for Episode 1.
The game’s Steam page has confirmed that The Walking Dead: Season 2 Episode 1 – All That Remains will be available for download on December 17. Thanks to the Major, we also know that the Xbox Live Arcade edition will follow on December 18. Sony has been tightlipped about The Walking Dead: Season 2, but it’s a safe bet that the game will be added to the PlayStation Store on December 17 as well (a Tuesday, which is the online storefront’s regular update day).
The only question that remains is the release date for the iOS and Vita versions. Oh, also, do you think is Telltale readying a release of The Walking Dead: Season 2 on the PS4, Xbox One, and Wii U? That’s a good question to ask too.
VGX 2013 Trailer: TitanFall

The inaugural VGX Awards closed with another look at 2014’s most anticipated game, TitanFall. Respawn Entertainment delivered a pair of trailers that showcased two previously unseen mech classes from the game.
The Ogre is a slow and awkward killing machine that will include a slew of powerful weapons. Meanwhile, the Stryder will be a fleet-footed mech that can outrun almost anything on the battlefield.
TitanFall will be released for the PC, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on March 11, 2014. Hit the break to view both trailers. (more…)
VGX 2013 Trailer: Tom Clancy’s The Division
Are you awake enough on this Sunday morning for a bunch of techspeak? Then I give you the “World Premiere” trailer for Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s The Division. Focusing on the power of the game’s Snowdrop Engine, the trailer goes in-depth on the game’s lighting system, shaders, particle physics, realistic damage effects, and much more.
Tom Clancy’s The Division will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One towards the end of next year.
VGX 2013 Trailer: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
“No man who meets The Hunt returns to this world.”
…And then a demon covered in spikes with a skull for a face just smiles at the camera. Your nightmares for the next two weeks have been brought to you by this “World Premiere” trailer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has been brought to you by Keanu Reeves in 47 Ronin.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is in development at CD Projekt RED and will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One next year.
VGX 2013 Trailer: Thief
“Robes. Robes are always a bad sign.”
Garret, the star of Eidos Montreal’s Thief, doesn’t have a high opinion of cultists performing arcane rituals. And I can’t say I blame him. But you’ll definitely have a high opinion of this “World Premiere” trailer for the game, which debuted at last night’s VGX Awards.
Thief will be published by Square Enix on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on February 25, 2014. The game will also be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on the same date.
VGX 2013 Trailer: Broken Age
Double Fine’s Broken Age already had a pretty extensive voice cast (including Jack Black, Wil Wheaton, and Harmonix co-founder Alex Rigopulos) before the release of the “World Premiere” trailer at this year’s VGX Awards. But now we know that Elijah Wood, who is apparently a huge fan of point-and-click adventure games, will provide the voice of Shay, Broken Age’s main character. According to Tim Schafer, the decision to bring Wood aboard was originally worked out through Twitter.
The first half of Broken Age will be released through Steam’s Early Access program in January.
