Dead Space 3 Review: In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream in Frustration

deadspace3-header

Isaac Clarke just can’t seem to catch a break. He’s been to hell and back, and here he is again in Dead Space 3, being tasked once more with unfathomable responsibility. After all, who else can be trusted with saving the universe against the power of the Markers? Visceral Games has made some pretty serious changes this time around, most of them bad ones. Rumors have flown that there won’t be a Dead Space 4, and just yesterday, EA announced that Dead Space 3 didn’t sell enough copies to be considered “successful.” Keeping all of that in mind, are those rumors justified? EA will release The Sims 4 in early 2014; 10 other titles planned for 2013/2014 release

thesims4-header

EA announced earlier this week that The Sims 4 would be released sometime next year. Yesterday, company President Frank Gibeau confirmed that the next entry in the popular franchise will be available for the PC and Mac in early 2014.

The Sims 4 will be joined by ten other titles in EA’s “fiscal 2014” lineup. All of these games will be in stores before March 31, 2014, but most are already on the schedule for 2013:

  • Fuse (May 28)
  • NCAA Football 14 (July 9)
  • Madden NFL 25 (August 27)
  • NHL 14 (September 10)
  • FIFA Soccer 14 (September)
  • FIFA Manager 14 (October)
  • Battlefield 4 (Fall)

They’ll be joined by the free-to-play Command & Conquer (which is expected to be released sometime in 2013), the next Need For Speed game (NFS games are typically released in the Fall), and NBA Live 14. Many of these titles were also confirmed for release on the PS4 and the Xbox 720/Durango during the same briefing.

Wolfenstein: The New Order goose steps into stores this Fall

Doom 4 is still in limbo and no one knows what’s going on with the Quake series, but id’s other big FPS franchise, Wolfenstein, will return this Fall in an all new game.

Wolfenstein: The New Order will be available for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and “next-generation consoles.” The game is in development at Machine Games, a relatively new studio founded in 2009 by a few former members of Starbreeze Studios.

Wolfenstein: The New Order will be set in an alternate 1960 where the Nazis won World War II. Naturally, this doesn’t sit well with American war hero B.J. Blazkowicz and he sets off for Europe to take down the Third Reich’s war machine. And I mean that quite literally, the announcement trailer above shows Blazkowicz squaring off against a never-ending wave of goose stepping mechs.

“We are excited to bring a new chapter of Wolfenstein to gamers everywhere,” said Jens Matthies, Creative Director at Machine Games. “As fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud.”

According to Bethesda, additional details about the game will be released in “a series of exclusive feature stories” on GameSpot.com beginning tomorrow.

Beatbuddy Hands-On Preview: A New Approach to Rhythm Gaming

beatbuddy-header

Beatbuddy is a super adorable side-scrolling rhythm game made by a small German company named Threaks. It was on the show floor at PAX East, and after seeing their adorable plushy mascot on backpacks all over the expo floor, I needed to find out what this game was all about. Not only do they have a great little fellow to promote their game, they’ve also got fantastic gameplay to back it up. I was more than happy with Beatbuddy, and I was ready to stand there and play it for another hour, if they’d let me. (more…)

Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaign has begun

As promised, Precursor Games has released the first details about Shadow of the Eternals and launched the crowdfunding campaign for their spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness. In a neat twist on the crowdfunding model, Precursor has decided to independently run the campaign themselves rather than going with Kickstarter or one of its many competitors.

So if you head over to the Shadow of the Eternals website, you’ll be greeted by the campaign video above and a request for $1.5 million. As we found out Friday, the developer plans to release the game episodically, and the campaign will cover the first episode, which Precursor is calling the “Pilot Episode.” If all goes well, a Summer 2014 release for the CryEngine 3-powered game on the PC and Wii U is planned.

The “Pilot Episode” will take place at Elizabeth Bathory’s home in medieval Hungary, Cachtice Castle. The year is 1610 and the “Blood Countess” has been terrorizing her subjects with abductions and ritualistic killings for 25 years. A first look at the game, with commentary from Denis Dyack, can be found at IGN.

The Precursor team is made up almost exclusively of former Silicon Knights developers. So while Shadow of the Eternals isn’t a direct sequel to the GameCube classic, it’s probably as close as we’ll ever get.

As of 3:15 PM (Eastern Time), the campaign has been active for a little over three hours with over $31,000 (or 2.1%) in pledges. So we might just get it.

The Sims 4 announced for 2014 release

sims-plumbobElectronic Arts and Maxis have announced that the The Sims 4 will be available for the PC and Mac in 2014. Sadly, that’s all we know right now. According to EA’s official blog, The Beat, more details about the next game in The Sims series will be released later today.

The Sims 3 was originally released in June 2009 and was followed by 10 expansion packs (with an 11th on the way this Fall), so it’s probably time for a full sequel.

UPDATE: EA has confirmed The Sims 4 will be an “offline experience.” Thank god for small miracles.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist brings back Spies vs Mercs mode

Ubisoft has confirmed that Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist is bringing back the popular “Spies vs Mercenaries” multiplayer mode. To the dismay of many fans of the franchise, “Spies vs Mercs” skipped the last Splinter Cell game, Conviction. Here’s what Ubisoft had to say about the mode’s inclusion in Blacklist:

The stealthy and agile spies have to extract sensitive data from 3 terminals while the powerful and heavy armored Mercs must use any means necessary to stop them. Each team has different abilities and tools at their disposal to outsmart their opponents in an exciting, high stakes redefined multiplayer experience.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist will be released for the PC, PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360 on August 20.

Eternal Darkness spiritual successor in development at Precursor Games

Eternal Darkness holds a special place in the hearts of many Nintendo fanatics. The GameCube game made excellent use of Lovecraftian horror and introduced an absolutely mindbending sense of trickery to the survival horror genre. The fact that it was published by Nintendo just added to the insanity (pun intended). So naturally, fans have been clamoring for a sequel ever sense.

While it likely won’t be published by Nintendo, we may just get one.

Denis Dyack and the rest of his Precursor Games team unveiled a teaser trailer for Shadow of the Eternals on IGN yesterday. Eternals is officially billed as a “spiritual successor” to Eternal Darkness, but it is currently planned for release on the Wii U and PC. The complete game will be broken down into 12 episodes, and a crowdfunding campaign will begin on Monday, May 6 in an attempt to fund the first one. Precursor is seeking $1.5 million to help them develop Shadow of the Eternals: Episode One.

It’s likely that Dyack began working on Shadow of the Eternals while he was still at Silicon Knights, the original creators of Eternal Darkness.
