Shadow PAX: The Hidden Games of PAX East 2013 You Probably Didn’t See

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you first enter the PAX East show floor. With over 200 exhibitors showing off over 500 products (at a minimum), there’s no way to see it all. In fact, it’s possible to seclude yourself in your own little piece of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and not realize that entire other worlds exist within the greater PAX East experience.
The “Three PAX Theory” is the belief that PAX East is actually three different conventions all smashed together. On the north side of the show floor, you have “Triple-A PAX.” That’s where your Nintendos and your Microsofts and your Ubisofts create massive booths, and a game like The Last of Us has a four-hour line. On the south side is “Indie PAX,” which houses the Indie Megabooth and a huge number of small developers who operate booths that are barely big enough for a TV and a few pins. Finally, on the extreme south side of the BCEC is “Tabletop PAX,” where it’s all dice and cards and there’s nary a video game in sight. I wish I had come up with it, but all credit for the “Three PAX Theory” must go to Jake “@jakeninja” Vander Ende.
However, there’s also a fourth side to PAX East that a lot of people don’t see. It takes place in the dark corners of the convention center and in gamer gathering places all across the city after the Expo Hall closes for the night. I like to call this “Shadow PAX.” (more…)

Journey collects six statues at 2013 GDC Awards including Game of the Year

The people behind the 2013 Game Developers Choice Awards like Journey. They really, really like Journey. Of the 11 awards handed out last night, the thatgamecompany-developed title was named the winner of six of them: Best Audio, Best Game Design, Best Visual Arts, Best Downloadable Game, the Innovation Award, and Game of the Year.
“This year we saw some amazing titles developed in the indie and downloadable game space, and the critical acclaim that titles like Journey, FTL: Faster Than Light, The Walking Dead, and The Room received could not have been more deserved,” said Meggan Scavio, General Manager of the Game Developers Conference.
While the GDC Awards committee loved Journey, the first-ever Audience Choice Award went to Arkane Studios’ Dishonored. The people have spoken and they really, really like assassinating bad dudes in a steampunk setting!
A complete list of winners can be found after the break. (more…)
Shovel Knight Hands-On Preview: I’m Diggin’ It

Being in the vicinity of Shovel Knight, the first project from Yacht Club Games, seems to make horrible puns just emerge from the ether. During my PAX East playtime, a nearby developer assured me that while the current build was only ten percent complete, the team was beginning to “dig in” towards the game’s full potential. The developer actually hadn’t realized the double meaning of his words until someone else pointed them out to him. He apologized for the terrible wordplay and admitted that it had been happening all morning.
But a game like Shovel Knight requires this kind of pun-tastic sense of humor. (more…)

Shovel Knight Interview: Sailing the PAX East Seas With Sean Velasco

Sean Velasco knows retro games. As the former Director of WayForward Technologies, he was the driving force behind Contra 4, A Boy and His Blob, and Double Dragon: Neon. And as the “Captain” of Yacht Club Games, Velasco is sailing off into the uncharted waters of an original property, Shovel Knight.
You can read all about Shovel Knight in our PAX East playthrough, which will be posted later today (UPDATE: Here it is!). But for now, let Captain Velasco guide you through his love of classic games, his thoughts on Kickstarter, Shovel Knight’s future, and the possibility of a PSN/XBLA version of the game. (more…)

Battlefield 4 revealed with 17 intense minutes of gameplay
DICE is no stranger to splashy reveals and trailers that show the horrors of war up close and personal. Last night’s Battlefield 4 debut at the 2013 Game Developers Conference offered a little bit of both. The game will be available this Fall for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Polygon‘s Brian Crecente spoke with an Electronic Arts official after the reveal and confirmed that Battlefield 4 will be available for the PS4 as well. The game runs on Frostbite 3, the latest version of DICE’s powerful engine platform. For proof of just how powerful it is, check out the 17-minute gameplay trailer above.
The demo begins as the player – Recker – opens his eyes to discover that he is trapped in a rapidly sinking car with three of his squad mates. Shooting the window is the only way out. Panic and fear are pushed aside as Recker makes a difficult decision – take the shot and recover the intel but risk that not everyone will survive. The emotional demo features a cast of characters unrivaled in interactive entertainment. Players will learn how to work together in both the Campaign and Multiplayer, issuing squad orders and comparing achievements in both experiences. Adventure and Competition will unfold through a series of beautifully crafted locations constructed with some of the best art and sound design in modern shooters.
A pre-order campaign has also launched today and EA has confirmed that all early purchasers will receive access to the Premium expansion pack.
The PAXpocalypse List: The Best of PAX East 2013

We don’t have the PAX pox, but what if the entire convention center was put under quarantine because of some mystery illness? What would you do? What would you see? We’d endure the PAXpocalypse by spending all of our time with the 13 games (nine playable, three developer-guided demos, and one board game) below. Though it would have to be after pushing the hordes of undead off our doorstep. Because any pox affecting PAXgoers would almost certainly have to lead to a zombie uprising. (more…)

Buy Dove products, get $20 off Dead Space 3, SimCity, or NFS: Most Wanted

Amazon has an interesting deal for you today. It looks like Electronic Arts has teamed up with Dove Men+Care… yes, the soap guys… and is offering $20 off any one EA game when you buy $15 or more of Dove Men+Care products. There’s no expiration date on this offer, but as always, if you’re interested, jump on it sooner rather than later.
The games being discounted are SimCity, Dead Space 3, and Need For Speed: Most Wanted (however, the offer doesn’t apply to the Vita version of Most Wanted or the recently released Wii U port, Need For Speed: Most Wanted U).
Nothing says hygiene like staring at your computer for ten days straight as you play SimCity, right?
