Sleeping Dogs Review: Where There’s a Will, There’s a Wei

Some people like to refer to Sleeping Dogs as “Grand Theft Auto: Hong Kong.” While that’s close to being true – you do steal and drive a lot of cars, and there’s a huge amount of missions you can take on – there’s far more to the game than just a reskinned GTA in a new location. There’s the undercover cop trope, giving it a detective feel. There’s the constant and very robust melee system, bringing in a lot of fun combat. And, of course, there’s fantastic character development, from Uncle Po to Broken Nose Jang to Wei Shen himself. No, this isn’t just GTA in Hong Kong. This is Sleeping Dogs, and it’s an animal all its own. (more…)
Madden NFL 13, Walking Dead Episode 3, Rock Band Blitz, more added to PS Store

As has been their custom all Summer long, Sony dumped another massive amount of games onto the PlayStation Store yesterday.
This week, PS3 gamers can download digital versions of Madden NFL 13 and Record of Agarest War Zero. Several previously bundled HD remakes can also now be had separately from the store including Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD, Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, and Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal.
Wait, we’re not done yet! Also available this week is Harmonix’s controller-based rhythm game Rock Band Blitz, The Walking Dead: Episode 3 – “Long Road Ahead” from Telltale Games, Activision’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, and the PlayStation Move party game Lights, Camera, Party.
Sony also added a lone PS2 Classic to the store yesterday, Double Fine’s psychotic platformer, Psychonauts.
Finally, Vita owners will also get a chance to download Madden NFL 13 and the PSone Classics on Vita patch is now live, but it’s not exactly perfect. Vita support has officially been added to just thirteen PSone games.
A complete list of this week’s new game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation Blog and more information on all of these new games can be found after the break. (more…)

CoD Black Ops II getting two special editions: Hardened and Care Package

The special edition packages that Activision has created for the Call of Duty series over the last few years have managed to raise the bar for all special editions. This year appears to be no different.
The Hardened Edition will come packed with the following goodies:
- Bonus In-Game Content: Nuketown Zombies & Nuketown 2025
- Xbox 360 CLAW Avatar Prop & Zombies Avatar Costume
OR PS3 Multiplayer Theme & Zombie Theme - Limited Edition Challenge Coins
- Official Soundtrack by Jack Wall With Theme by Trent Reznor
- Collectible Steelbook
- Exclusive Weapon Camo
- Exclusive Player Card Backgrounds
Pretty nifty, but this year’s big bundle is the even more impressive Care Package Edition. It’ll include all of the Hardened Edition content, as well as an MD-27 Dragonfire Drone with Remote Control, all packaged in a massive foot locker. Flight enthusiasts, you have been put on notice!
Pricing details have yet to be announced, but you can get a closer look at the Hardened and Care Package Editions after the break.

Home is where the Hearthfire is in Skyrim this September
Bethesda will be bringing elements of domestic bliss to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim with “Hearthfire,” a newly announced add-on for the already massive RPG. The DLC will be available to download first on Xbox Live on September 4 for 400 Microsoft Points ($5). PC and PS3 versions will presumably come later.
Rather than a full-fledged expansion, “Hearthfire” adds a little bit of Minecraft and The Sims to the world of Skyrim. Players will be able to purchase a plot of land and build the house of their dreams (or the shack of their dreams, if that’s what they prefer). Fans of Curb Appeal and Trading Spaces can further decorate their new abode with furniture and knick-knacks built using the new crafting table feature.
And once they have a threshold to walk over, players can even move in their spouse and adopt (and raise) children. Let’s just hope they don’t get eaten by a giant…

Lollipop Chainsaw becomes bestselling Grasshopper Manufacture game

Suda 51’s Lollipop Chainsaw has been unable to crack the NPD’s list of bestselling games since it was released in June. However, that hasn’t stopped it from becoming the most popular Grasshopper Manufacture-developed game ever.
The developer revealed the news this weekend during a “Summer Appreciation Event” in celebration of the game. All told, Grasshopper Manufacture, and publisher Kadokawa Games, have shipped over 700,000 copies of the title worldwide. I guess a lot of people love the idea of a teenage cheerleader cutting down zombies with a chainsaw.
For comparison’s sake, Grasshopper’s previous game, last year’s Shadows of the Damned, sold less than 25,000 copies in its first month of availability in the US.

Sony closes Wipeout developer Studio Liverpool
In what was a gloomy and depressing day for British game development as Sony Computer Entertainment announced the closure of its Liverpool studio last week. The studio was originally known as Psygnosis, a developer who crafted some of the best known games of the 1980s including Lemmings and Shadow of the Beast. They were taken over by Sony Computer Entertainment in 1993, making it one of the oldest teams in the SCE family.
The Liverpool studio is best known for its work on Sony’s Wipeout franchise, creating the latest title, Wipeout 2048, exclusively for the PS Vita. While Sony issued a bittersweet statement revealing that other teams will now make use of the Liverpool facilities, members of the Wipeout 2048 development team took to the game’s Facebook page to have a final word with their fans.
“As some of you may have heard Sony have chosen to close Studio Liverpool as of today. This page will no longer be maintained by theWipEout Team. We have loved making every game, every minute and every one of you. Keep the faith, keep loving WipEout. Thank you for everything, Pilots. It’s been an amazing journey and we’ll miss you. x”
Sadly, the news came just two days after the studio lost one of their veteran developers, Colin Fawcett, to cancer.

New Releases: Madden NFL 13, Ratchet & Clank Collection, God of War Saga, More

Summer is almost over, but that just means there’s still one more week for publishers to put out a few more Summer games.
An August tradition, this week’s biggest new release is Madden NFL 13. The EA Sports mainstay will make it to the Xbox 360, PS3, Vita, and Wii this week, with a Wii U version scheduled for release later this year.
Also available this week is a quartet of Sony-published PS3 collections including the Ratchet & Clank Collection (which is available on the PS3 for the first time), the God of War Saga, the InFamous Collection, and the Journey: Collector’s Edition.
Finally, peripheral maker Mad Catz has jumped into the game publishing business with Damage Inc: Pacific Squadron WWII for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
Wait, I almost forgot one… Sandman: Whispered Stories, a budget PC title, is also new in stores this week.

These Grand Theft Auto V screenshots are strictly business
Rockstar Games has decided to close out the week with a final batch of of Grand Theft Auto V screenshots. Today’s theme is “Business” and Rockstar is clearly taking care of it as they give us new images featuring two high-speed police chases, a biplane getaway, and a helicopter sniper taking out a thug. You can peep all four screenshots after the break.
Rockstar has promised that more screens will be released “in a few weeks” and in case you missed this week’s other new GTA5 screenshots, we’ve got you covered: “Leisure” and “Transport.” (more…)
