Netflix says “Game Over” to game rentals

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has had a hard year. So let’s all be nice to him as he puts a stake through the heart of the company’s game rental plans and retreats completely from the scuttled Qwikster plan.
During the company’s quarterly financial report yesterday, he was asked, “Will you be adding video games […] to your product offering?” Hastings killed the idea by bluntly replying back, “[W]e have no plans to enter video games.”
So there you have it. GameFly executives can breathe easier and gamers can continue to wonder if Blockbuster or Redbox will ever rise up to challenge them.

Nintendo has announced a ludicrously awesome exclusive limited edition bundle for the European release of The Last Story. The limited edition will have the game, an exclusive SteelBook cover, and “The Elements Of The Last Story” package, including the soundtrack (seven songs from the game composed by the talented Nobuo Uematsu) and an art book of illustrations.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Review: Motion-Controlling Hyrule’s Destiny

2011 was definitely the Year of Zelda. The franchise celebrated its 25th anniversary with symphonies, re-releases of previous Zelda games on handhelds, a swanky display in the Nintendo World Store in New York City, and the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. It is the first true console Zelda game since The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and was promised to take full advantage of the Wii’s capabilities. With the addition of the Wii MotionPlus support, does Skyward Sword live up to all of the hype? Or will we wish to play the Song of Time and be whisked away to an era of better Zelda games? (more…)

Nintendo Download: Resident Evil Revelations demo, Lock N Chase, more
While Resident Evil Revelations, and the Circle Pad Pro accessory, are still a few weeks away, gamers will be able to give it a try starting today thanks to the new 3DS demo program!
But don’t let me make you think a demo is the biggest addition to the various Nintendo download services today. The Big N has also added one of my favorite Game Boy games, Lock N Chase, to the 3DS eShop. Lock N Chase may be a Pac-Man clone that replaces the generic maze with a bank and dots with cold, hard cash, but it is also ridiculously fun.
Here’s what else you’ll be able to buy from the Nintendo Download today:
Stonekeep: Bones of the Ancestors (WiiWare) – The legend of Stonekeep requires a new hero: you. Explore creepy dungeons, defeat monsters and take their loot in this fantasy RPG.
Anne’s Doll Studio: Gothic Collection (DSiWare) – Dress up a stylish doll by choosing from a wide range of Gothic-style dresses and accessories.
Gaia’s Moon (DSiWare) – Something strange is causing changes to the balance of energy in Gaia. Use your skills to discover who’s behind these changes and return harmony to the Gaia system.

Daily Scoop: January 18, 2012 – Board games are fun!
Tonight, my dashing boyfriend and I are heading to a friend’s for delicious food and board games. We’re going to play some Pandemic and try to cure the world of all of its horrible viruses! Considering I’ve only won the game a small fraction of times I’ve played it, I’m not optimistic. But it’s still fun! You should check it out.
Amazon’s got another EA PC download for today’s Deal of the Day in video games – this time it’s $6.99 for Battlefield Bad Company 2. This is a great deal on a solid game, so scoop it up! Amazon’s also got new weekly deals going in games as well. First up is 40% off Disney Universe for the PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360, bringing it down to $29.99. Next is $50 off the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Collector’s Edition, bringing that down to a more reasonable $99.99. If you buy a 250 GB Xbox 360 Holiday Kinect Bundle, you can get Kinect Sports Season Two and a Fitbit Wireless Activity/Sleep Tracker for free. And in the Warehouse, you can get Halo Reach for $17.99 used. Scoopity scoops!
No gamer shirts (what did you expect after having four yesterday!) but there is a hilarious “Army of Darkness” one I’m tempted to buy… (more…)
Uncharted 3 leads the 2012 AIAS Interactive Achievement Awards with 12 nominations
The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences has announced the nominees for the 15th annual Interactive Achievement Awards and, to save everybody some time, they just recycled the nominee list from 2010.
OK, not really. But a surprising number of games on this year’s ballot are part of franchises that took home some IAA hardware in 2010. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception leads all nominees with 12 nominations, just like Uncharted 2, which nearly swept the 2010 IAAs. Batman: Arkham Asylum won every award that Uncharted 2 didn’t in 2010, and so it goes in 2012 as Batman: Arkham City racked up six nominations this year.
Other games with more than five nominations include Portal 2 (ten), L.A. Noire (nine), Battlefield 3, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (six each).
Many of those multiple nominees (Arkham City, Skyrim, Portal 2, and Uncharted 3) will be involved in the five-way battle royale for the IAA Game of the Year award. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword rounds out the the category.
Hit the break for a complete list of every nominated game in all categories. And remember, the 2012 AIAS IAAs will be handed out during this year’s DICE Summit on February 9. (more…)
