New Retail Releases: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Dragon Quest Heroes II, More

Spring has sprung, flowers are in bloom, and a huge batch of new releases will be sprouting on the shelves at your local game store this week.

Nintendo Switch owners have the biggest reasons to celebrate this week as Nintendo will bring Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to the console, while Sega will release Puyo Puyo Tetris. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe includes all of the downloadable content from Mario Kart 8’s original release, as well as several new racers, a brand new Battle Mode, and improved graphics. Meanwhile, Puyo Puyo Tetris mashes together the two puzzle game franchises to create a multiplayer title that features nearly a dozen different ways to play.

Also available this week is a pair of terrifying new titles, including Red Barrels’s first-person horror compilation, Outlast Trinity (which contains Outlast, its expansion, and the brand new Outlast II) for the PS4 and Xbox One. Bandai Namco will also release their creepy puzzle platformer, Little Nightmares, for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Elsewhere on store shelves, fans of big swords and big guns will be able to get your fix with the Square Enix/Koei Tecmo collaboration, Dragon Quest Heroes II (PS4), and CI Games’s shooter sequel, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 (PC, PS4, and Xbox One).

Finally this week, the Syberia franchise comes in from the cold with Syberia 3, which will launch for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

You can find a complete list of this week’s new retail releases after the break. (more…)

Gun Media and Illfonic will release Friday the 13th: The Game on May 26

Fans were rather upset when Friday the 13th: The Game missed its original “Early 2017” launch date. But don’t worry, the first video game starring Jason Voorhees in nearly 30 years will be available just in time for Summer Camp season… Gun Media and Illfonic have announced it’ll be available to download for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on May 26.

Unlike the earlier Friday the 13th games, Friday the 13th: The Game is a multiplayer contest pitting four counselors against one player who takes control of Jason. If this seems a little unfair, well, that’s the point.

With the base game on its way to completion, Gun Media and Illfonic have begun work on the boxed retail release and a free single-player expansion, both of which are scheduled to be released later this Summer.

Though we haven’t received a new Friday the 13th film since the 2009 reboot, Jason Voorhees has kept himself busy with video game work. In addition to Friday the 13th: The Game, the slasher also appeared as a downloadable character in 2015’s Mortal Kombat X.

Xbox Store Today: Cities Skylines, Halo Wars Definitive Edition, Deformers, more

Build and destroy in today’s Xbox Games Store update…

Cities: Skylines was originally released for the PC back in 2015, but console players will get the chance to create the cityscape of their dreams with its Xbox One debut. Rebuilt from the ground up to make use of the Xbox One controller, Cities: Skylines also includes the After Dark expansion, which adds nightlife and tourist attractions to your urban planning portfolio.

Also available to download today is Halo Wars: Definitive Edition, an Xbox One re-release of the real-time strategy game that was originally released for the Xbox 360. Featuring improved graphics, new Achievements, and all the DLC from the original game, players will be able to build their army and destroy the Covenant in this spinoff from the popular Halo series.

Finally today, GameStop’s GameTrust label will bring Ready At Dawn’s Deformers to the Xbox One. The “fast and frantic” multiplayer arena game includes both couch co-op and online battles with combatants ranging from aliens to animals to blobs.

You can learn more about all of these games (and a few other new releases) after the break. (more…)

Activision officially announces Call of Duty: WWII; Reveal Livestream scheduled for April 26

The rumors have been swirling about Call of Duty’s re-engagement with the Second World War for some time now. And after the success of Battlefield 1 (and the relative failure of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare), it’s reasonable to think that Activision might want to try something “new.”

That reasonable assumption turned into an official announcement today, as Activision and Sledgehammer Games confirmed that Call of Duty: WWII will be released this November for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The original Call of Duty helped popularize the World War II setting for shooters back in 2003, but the franchise hasn’t returned to the conflict since 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War.

But thankfully, we won’t have to wait very long to discover more Call of Duty: WWII intel. The publisher and developer also announced plans to host a “Worldwide Reveal Livestream” for the game on the official website on April 26 at 1:00 PM (Eastern Time).

Bandai Namco announces anime-styled action RPG Code Vein

For a time, it felt like vampires completely took over the bookstore, the cineplex, and your television. But aside from a Castlevania here and a BloodRayne there, the bloodsucking fiends have kept their fangs away from video games.

Bandai Namco wants to change all that in 2018 with the release of Code Vein, an anime-styled action RPG that’s currently in development for “major home consoles” (I assume that’s a euphemism for “PS4 and Xbox One, but not Nintendo’s Switch”). In the post-apocalyptic world of Code Vein, players will attempt to recover their lost memories and stave off their vampiric curse:

In the not too distant future, a mysterious disaster has brought collapse to the world, as we know it. Towering skyscrapers, once symbols of prosperity, are now lifeless graves of humanity’s past pierced by the Thorns of Judgment. At the center of the destruction lies a hidden society of Revenants called Vein. This final stronghold is where the remaining few fight to survive, blessed with Gifts of power in exchange for their memories and a thirst for blood. Give into the bloodlust fully and risk becoming one of the Lost, fiendish ghouls devoid of any remaining humanity.

As you might expect, players will be able to feed on their enemies, but they’ll also be able to use this nourishment to unlock special abilities known as Gifts:

Revenants also have access to Blood Veils, devices capable of draining the blood of their enemies in order to enhance their own abilities. Exploiting these enhanced abilities known as Gifts, players can change their form to increase their strength, weaken enemies, and utilize new weapon abilities with overpowered attacks. Utilizing the vast array of weaponry along with each character’s Gift, players can adapt and strategize to a variety of battle conditions that suit their play styles.

A very stylish teaser trailer for Code Vein can be found after the break. (more…)

Nintendo smashed sales records in March 2017… but Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands was the top-selling game

Nintendo told us all about their record-setting sales month last week, but the NPD Group made it official today when they revealed their retail report on the video game industry for March 2017.

NPD analyst Sam Naji told GamesIndustry.biz: “March 2017 will go down in history books as the month Nintendo broke records. The Nintendo Switch had the biggest hardware launch for a Nintendo platform and the second biggest launch for any video game platform since 1995, the time NPD began tracking this category.”

However, even though The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild managed to sell more than 900,000 copies, it wasn’t able to secure the #1 spot. Instead, Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands was the best-selling game last month, likely due to Nintendo’s unwillingness to share their digital sales figures with the NPD Group. Other strong sellers on the Switch included 1-2 Switch (#13) and Super Bomberman R (#17).

Big debuts weren’t limited to Nintendo’s Switch, and it was a banner month for several new releases last month, as Mass Effect: Andromeda (#3), Horizon: Zero Dawn (#4), and Nier: Automata (#9) also smashed expectations. Combined with impressive Switch hardware sales, these games helped the industry record more than $1.36 billion in total sales for the month, a 24% year-on-year increase over March 2016.

The complete list of best-selling games from March 2017 can be found after the break. (more…)
