New CoD: Black Ops III trailer gives us a glimpse at the beta test
Activision gave us a sneak peek at what the Call of Duty: Black Ops III beta will contain in a new trailer released this afternoon.
Beta participants can expect to test out at least seven multiplayer modes, at least three maps, eight Multiplayer Specialists, and weapon customization with the game’s “Paintshop” tool.
Do you want to be part of the beta? First thing you have to do is pre-order a copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops III on the PC, PS4, or Xbox One. Then you’ll get an invite to join the beta on August 19 (PS4) or August 26 (PC and Xbox One).
Call of Duty: Black Ops III is in development at Treyarch and will be released on November 6.

Grand Theft Auto V has sold 54 million copies; Single-Player DLC is still MIA
Take-Two Interactive didn’t have much to talk about during their quarterly financial report yesterday. Because XCOM 2, Battleborn, and Mafia III are still many months away, company executives mostly used the presentation to boast about the continued success of Grand Theft Auto V.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said that the game has sold more than 54 million copies since it was released in 2013. That number includes GTA5’s initial launch on the PS3 and Xbox 360, as well as its subsequent release on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s quite an impressive achievement for everyone involved, which is probably why Zelnick didn’t sound very appreciative when an analyst tried to compare Mafia III to a Rockstar-developed project during the Q&A portion of the presentation:
Mafia III is a completely different experience. I wouldn’t compare it to anything else out there. The reveal was great, but it stands alone. And no, we don’t use any other game in the same sentence as Grand Theft Auto. It is the industry’s standard bearer. It’s not up for comparison. So no, I think, it’s flattering to even think that may be the case, but it’s not.
I love Zelnick’s “take no prisoners” attitude and the defense of his developers, but there was also some bad news for GTA fans during the presentation as well. Karl Slatoff, the President of Take-Two Interactive, confirmed the publisher has no information to share about a single-player expansion for Grand Theft Auto V, telling one analyst, “[W]e really don’t have anything to say about that today.”
Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries developer GRIN shuts down, cannot deliver Kickstarter rewards
After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries was released by developer GRIN earlier this year (the Belgian GRIN, not the Swedish Grin that shut its doors in 2009). Yesterday, founder and CEO Wim Wouters wrote on the game’s official website that the developer has filed for bankruptcy and is shutting its doors immediately. Wouters said that poor sales of the game and the unexpected costs associated with an increase in scope during development were to blame:
Why on earth would we want to increase the scope of our game without increasing the budget. Ok, it is understandable that you get inspired to try new things in gameplay, you have to experiment to come up with creative ideas and solutions. I’m not saying the ideas we came up with were impossible. But changing gameplay from 2D to 3D had a major impact on overall development cost (we found out a little too late).
Wouters also talked about the company’s history and its decision to try out Kickstarter, making it an interesting read by itself.
While not losing my passion and still spending every minute of spare time, I generated my basic income doing work-for-hire jobs. Every year the company grew a little stronger, a little better, a little more stable. Until 2 years ago, GRIN had 5 full-time employees exclusively making games for clients, we even made enough money to save a little cash on the side. We would use these savings to create the game of our dreams. Little did we know this would be the beginning of the end.
However, his positive take on the situation turns to worry when he starts to talk about Kickstarter rewards. Primarily because GRIN doesn’t have the money to ship any of the physical rewards.
The people that believed in us from the beginning? People we made promises too. People we have let down. Even worse… people we will not be able to give the full rewards they invested in.
The crazy thing is, that we have most of the rewards ready for postage. All the backer stickers and letters of enlistment just need a stamp. All the poster sets printed, signed and ready. The artbook is ready to be printed, the soundtrack is ready for distribution, the DVD case is ready for production. But we have literally no money whatsoever to pay for stamps, let alone print the artbooks and dvd-cases.
Video game studios shut down all the time. It’s an expensive business, and feature creep is a serious issue for new and old developers alike (see Double Fine’s Broken Age). No matter how big or small the studio, it’s always sad to see someone who entered the industry to follow their dreams have life rip that dream from cold, hungry hands.
It’s even worse when Kickstarter is involved, and people don’t get to have their rewards. On the bright side, the game did end up getting made, and while it didn’t sell great, it got some decent reviews. All backers seem to have gotten their digital rewards at the very least. A continuation of the first game, Woolfe Chapter 2, is currently in limbo, as is the planned Xbox One version.
Here’s hoping those Kickstarter backers don’t feel too burned, and that the developers from GRIN get to continue their passion. For now, the developer is attempting to sell the rights to Woolfe: The Red Hood Diaries (and all the assets created for Chapter 2), so perhaps they’ll get enough to fund the physical rewards at least.
New Releases: Toy Soldiers: War Chest, XBlaze Lost: Memories

If history is any guide, we’ll see a big uptick in new releases towards the end of August. However, since we’re still in the middle of the month, only four new games will be available on store shelves this week…
Toy Soldiers: War Chest is the third Toy Soldiers game from developer Signal Studios and the first to be published by Ubisoft. The special “Hall of Fame Edition” of the strategy game will feature four fictional toy armies doing battle with iconic characters from He-Man: Masters of the Universe, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, and Assassin’s Creed II. Toy Soldiers: War Chest will be available for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Also available this week is XBlaze Lost: Memories, which will be released for the PS3 and Vita. Published by Aksys, XBlaze Lost was developed by Arc System Works and is the second prequel to the BlazBlue series of fighting games. Not only that, but the publisher and developer consider XBlaze Lost the first “RPG-style visual novel.” So I guess that’s something.
Finally, a pair of children’s games, Garfield Kart and Paddington: Adventures in London, will be released for the 3DS.
Several other new releases will be available this week through the Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, Steam, and Xbox Games Store.
Activision adds 16 songs to Guitar Hero Live to bring its total to 100 (and counting)

Earlier this week, Activision announced another batch of songs that will be included in Guitar Hero Live, bringing the total number of tracks to 100. That triple-digit number means that Guitar Hero Live will have the largest selection of on-disc of any music game when its released this Fall. The previous record holder, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, topped out at 93.
And Activision isn’t looking to beat the Babe by a single home run like Roger Maris in 1961. They want to really push the disc capacity of the new-generation systems and the publisher plans to announce even more songs for Guitar Hero Live in the future. But for now, here’s a list of all 16 songs that are part of this announcement:

New Final Fantasy XV trailer is all about fathers and sons… and a 2016 release date is teased
Square Enix released a new trailer for Final Fantasy XV at the 2015 Gamescom expo that is all about fathers and sons. Specifically, about the “strong bond” that exists between King Regis and his son, the Crown Prince Noctis. It is Noctis who ventures out into the world with his comrades after the Niflheim army attacks his homeland of Lucis. Can he save the world? Probably, as this trailer tells us, he is the chosen one after all.
I gotta say, I really enjoy the traffic jam with its bizarre mix of coupes from the 1930s sitting alongside modern supercars, all being directed by knights in full plate armor carrying machine guns.
If you were hoping that Square Enix would announce a release date for Final Fantasy XV, you’re unfortunately out of luck. But GameSpot did have a sitdown with Director Hajime Tabata during the show, who said that the game won’t be released this year, but “It’s going to be before [2017].” So if it’s not out this year and 2017 is too late, that means we’ll probably be playing Final Fantasy XV sometime in 2016.
However, Tabata also said an official release date announcement would likely take place during this year’s PAX Prime expo.

Bandai Namco has released a gameplay trailer for Dark Souls III
The Dark Souls franchise will make its PS4 and Xbox One debut early next year (or rather, the first original entry in the series will) and now we’ve gotten our first look at it as Bandai Namco released the first gameplay trailer for Dark Souls III during this week’s Gamescom expo.
If you prefer your action games to be gothic and gruesome, Dark Souls III is the game for you:
Dark Souls III continues to push the boundaries with the latest, ambitious chapter in the critically-acclaimed and genre-defining series. As fires fade and only embers remain, journey once more into a world filled with more daunting and colossal enemies and environments. Players will be immersed into a world of epic atmosphere and darkness through faster gameplay and amplified combat intensity. New to the series are the Battle Arts attacks as each weapon will be equipped with its own unique Battle Art to deliver powerful attacks that will break through enemy defenses.
Dark Souls III will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One in early 2016.
