We hope you’ve been flexing your Pokemon muscles this year with Pokemon Go, because Nintendo and Game Freak are getting ready to launch Pokemon Moon and Pokemon Sun this week for the 3DS. The latest game in the long-running franchise will take place in the Alola region (which is based on Hawaii), and introduce a few dozen new Pokemon to players.

Also available on store shelves this week is Watch Dogs 2, the latest game in Ubisoft’s series of hacktivist open world titles. This time, players will travel to San Francisco and join up with Marcus Holloway, a hacker who is working to take down the latest version of ctOS.

Elsewhere in your favorite game store this week, you’ll find a bunch of re-releases. Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection will bring together all three games starring Ezio Auditore (Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations) in a new collection for the PS4 and Xbox One. Meanwhile, EA will package together Star Wars: Battlefront and all of its post-launch downloadable content in Star Wars: Battlefront – Ultimate Edition for the PS4 and Xbox One. EA announces Rogue One expansion for Star Wars: Battlefront and delivers first look at September’s Death Star content

“That’s no moon… It’s a space station.”

Today at the Star Wars Celebration, Electronic Arts and DICE unveiled the first teaser trailer for Death Star, this September’s upcoming expansion for Star Wars: Battlefront.

In the Death Star expansion, players will be able to pilot their X-Wing through the famous Trench Run in a new map, as well as take part in a raid inside the massive space station. Like the previous expansions, DICE will also add new new vehicles, blasters, and Star Cards to the game, as well as two new Heroes: bounty hunter Bossk and Han Solo’s lifemate, Chewbacca.

Finally, the publisher and developer looked into the future to deliver a a sneak peek at the game’s fourth (and final) expansion, which will be based on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Known as Rogue One: Scarif, the expansion will be available “this Holiday season” and give players the chance to play as Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn).

EA and DICE plan to reveal more about both expansions soon.

EA will add offline Skirmish Mode to Star Wars: Battlefront next week

starwarsbattlefront-header

EA and DICE are making good on their promise to bring an offline mode to Star Wars: Battlefront. Beginning next week, Star Wars: Battlefront owners will be able to head into battle against offline bots in a special Skirmish Mode, which will also be splitscreen-compatible for two players on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Skirmish Mode will be available to download on July 20, and here’s what Lead Designer Dennis Brannvall had to say about it on the Battlefront Blog:

The new mode will be available starting July 20 and offers players the option to play offline against bots in a solo mission or with a friend using co-op split screen (Console only). Skirmish can be played on a difficulty level of your choosing and across two modes, Walker Assault and Fighter Squadron. With multiple locations that span the galaxy, from the frozen planet of Hoth to the lava encrusted planet of Sullust, we hope Skirmish brings players a new way to enjoy Star Wars: Battlefront.

The developer also confirmed that Battlefront’s next expansion, Death Star, will be available in September.

Star Wars: Battlefront Season Pass owners will get Bespin expansion on June 21

starwarsbattlefront-header

Strike up the “Star Wars Main Theme,” EA and DICE have announced that Star Wars: Battlefront‘s Bespin expansion will be available to download (for Season Pass owners) on June 21. All other Star Wars: Battlefront owners will be able to access the DLC two weeks later, on July 5.

Along with a release date, EA and DICE also revealed a bit more about the expansion’s new heroes, weapons, and vehicles on the game’s official website:

Join legendary smuggler Lando Calrissian and cold-blooded bounty hunter Dengar in the Cloud City of Bespin. Take to the skies in the new Cloud Car vehicle and journey through Cloud City and the Administrator’s Palace. The Bespin digital expansion will feature two new blasters to add to your arsenal. No matter your preference of short or long range combat, there will be something new to try out in Cloud City. Hunt enemies within the Bioniip Laboratories or carbon-freezing chambers with the new X-8 Night Sniper and EE-4 blasters.

Lando and Dengar both feature new traits that will give them unique gameplay abilities. Dengar is a villain that thrives on being in a fight. He wields the DLT-19, which makes him the first Hero with a heavy blaster so far. Lando is very skilled with a blaster too, but his greatest talent comes from knowing the odds and using tricks against his enemies.

EA and DICE will release more Star Wars: Battlefront content over the next year including two additional expansions. The Death Star expansion will arrive this Fall, and an untitled expansion will follow in Early 2017.

EA will add an Offline Mode to Star Wars: Battlefront this Spring

starwarsbattlefront-header

While Star Wars: Battlefront has been massively successful for Electronic Arts, many players were disappointed it continues to require an Internet connection to play as an “online only” game. Thankfully, it looks like EA plans to remedy that mistake in an upcoming Spring update.

According to the official Battlefront Blog, developer DICE will release a free update in “the next few months” that’ll add new in-game events, new Hutt Contracts, special May the 4th (AKA “Star Wars Day”) activities, and some kind of offline content to the game:

  • New In-Game Events – More double score weekends, community missions and Special Login Events are coming for players to earn more experience, credits and items.
  • New Hutt Contracts – Unlock powerful Star Cards like the Berserker Trait, Bacta Bomb, and Ion Neutralizer.
  • More New Content – We also have a couple of surprises in store that we know our fans have been looking for, especially those who have been clamoring for ways to have more options to enjoy Star Wars Battlefront offline. More to come soon.
  • Specific for May the 4th – In celebration of Star Wars Day we have cool activities planned that we’ll announce soon.

In other Battlefront news, the Bespin expansion will be released this June, and include four new maps set in and around Cloud City. The expansion will also include new Blasters and Star Cards, along with two new Heroes… Lando Calrissian and the bounty hunter Dengar. While the lack of Lobot is a blow to Star Wars fans everywhere, Dengar’s ability to look extra schlubby while standing next to Darth Vader in Empire Strikes Back has made him a beloved part of the franchise’s lore.

Actually, no, that’s not true, not even a little bit.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt wins “Game of the Year” at 2016 SXSW Gaming Awards

sxsw-logoCD Projekt’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was on target once again as it collected another “Game of the Year” win this weekend at the SXSW Gaming Awards. In addition to its big win, The Witcher 3 won two other awards: “Excellence in Technical Achievement” and “Excellence in Narrative.”

The Witcher 3 faced stiff competition from several of last year’s other big releases, including Bloodborne and Rise of the Tomb Raider, both of which won a pair of 2016 SXSW Gaming Awards. Fallout 4 wins “Game of the Year” at 2016 DICE Awards

dicesummit-header

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences held their annual DICE Awards ceremony last night, and Bethesda’s Fallout 4 emerged from The Vault to take home “Game of the Year” honors. The expansive open world RPG also won in two other categories, “Role-Playing/Massively Multiplayer Game of the Year” and “Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction.” However, it wasn’t a sweep for the post-apocalyptic adventure.

A trio of other games took home three awards last night including Moon Studios’s Ori and the Blind Forest (“Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition,” “Outstanding Achievement in Animation,” and “Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction”), Psyonix’s Rocket League (“Sports Game of the Year,” “Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay,” and the “DICE Spirit Award”), and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (“Outstanding Achievement in Game Design,” “Outstanding Achievement in Story,” and “Outstanding Technical Achievement”).

While the ceremony featured plenty of revelry and merriment, last night’s DICE Awards were also a bittersweet affair as Satoru Iwata was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his distinguished business leadership of Nintendo. And Hideo Kojima, who recently parted ways with Konami after more than three decades with the company, was named to the AIAS’s Hall of Fame.

A complete list of this year’s winners (which also includes Super Mario Maker, Mortal Kombat X, Star Wars: Battlefront, and many more) can be found after the break. (more…)
