Rockstar Toronto is hiring for a next-gen game

rockstarlogoRockstar Games has been very quiet about their post-Grand Theft Auto V plans. But it looks like at least one of their studios is making the jump into next-generation game development.

Rockstar Toronto is currently hiring for an Environment Artist who will be tasked with “designing, building and texturing the world” of a new game in development for “next-gen consoles.” The PS4 and Xbox One were not specifically mentioned by name, so any speculation about platforms at this point would just be guesswork. Similarly, asking whether the game will be part of an existing Rockstar franchise (including the hope that it’s a next-gen port of GTA5) or an original property is equally speculative.

Max Payne 3 is the most recent game on Rockstar Toronto’s resume. The team was part of the “Rockstar Studios” collective (alongside Rockstar London, Rockstar New England, and the now defunct Rockstar Vancouver) that developed the title.

Weekly Warp-Up: Happy Anniversary to the App Store

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Happy Anniversary… Happy Anniversary… Haaappy Anniversary!

Apple’s iOS App Store celebrated its fifth anniversary this week and the massive company is sharing the wealth by giving iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users a present in the form of ten free games. And they aren’t just random titles, it’s some of the best stuff the App Store has to offer including Infinity Blade II, Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Angry Birds Star Wars, Peggle, and Mirror’s Edge. And speaking of Angry Birds Star Wars… Rovio has strongly hinted that the next five years of the iOS App Store will begin with the announcement of a sequel to the popular bird-flinger based on the Prequel Trilogy.

In non-video game news, we sat down with the co-creator of the card game Don’t Play With Drugs on the eve of the end of its Kickstarter campaign. Sadly, the community chose not to fund the project, but hopefully the team at Right After Then will try again in the future.

What do you think about tabletop gaming coverage on Warp Zoned? Would you like to see more? Let us know in the comments and be sure to hit the jump for more news from the week that was.

newreleases071613

It’s a “grab bag” week of new releases as there’s a little something for everyone.

Fans of action games will be happy to know that another Dynasty Warriors game will be available in stores this week. Dynasty Warriors 8 will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360. All You Can Arcade wants to be the GameFly of arcade cabinets

allyoucanarcade-header

Even with the success of the Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield, Illinois, it’s obvious that the American arcade scene is not in good shape. Enter All You Can Arcade, a California-based company that wants to become the GameFly of the arcade world.

For $75 a month, subscribers to the service can rent a full-sized arcade cabinet for an entire month. And if you want to build a (temporary) game room in your home, the company also offers two-game ($150 per month) and three-game ($225 per month) plans. Thankfully, the cost of delivery (and the pickup at the end of the month) is included in the subscription price. Because of the size and bulk of your average arcade cabinet, All You Can Arcade currently only serves the the San Francisco and Sacramento areas, but they hope to expand nationwide through their Partner program. Partners would register their location and the names of the cabinets they’re willing to rent out and All You Can Arcade would serve as the middleman to connect them with potential subscribers.

Check back Monday for our interview with Seth Peterson, the company’s passionate co-founder and CEO.

“The Legend of Zelda” (sort of) stumps 2 of 3 contestants in Final Jeopardy!

jeopardy-zelda

Alex Trebek has asked many questions inspired by video games over the years on Jeopardy! But yesterday’s episode likely marked the first time that Final Jeopardy! would test a contestant’s knowledge of joysticks, pixels, and 1-Ups.

The category was “Video Game History” and the clue read, “The title princess of this game, which launched a best-selling franchise, was named for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife.” Have you figured it out? I hope so. The answer is “(What is) The Legend of Zelda.” All three players knew the answer (though Trebek kept asking the three contestants if they knew the name of the franchise), but only one got credit for it.

Champion Mark Japinga was able to come up with the game’s full title, but challengers Ken Dasher and Toby Crew both answered “Zelda.” If this were the Jeopardy! or Double Jeopardy! round, the host likely would have asked them for clarification, but because it was Final Jeopardy!, the wrath of Trebek was delivered (“Gotta pay attention,” he told both losing contestants).

I think we all know how Sean Connery would have responded to that.

The Starship Damrey Review: A Clever, Fun, and Terrifying Space Puzzler

starshipdamrey-header

The Starship Damrey is the first game to be released in America from Level-5’s Guild02 collection, their second set of 3DS collaborations with some of Japan’s most acclaimed developers. You might remember such games as Liberation Maiden, Aero Porter, and Crimson Shroud from Guild01, and the quality hasn’t wavered at all in this first installment of Guild02. Designed by Kazuya Asano and written by Takemaru Abiko, creators of text-based adventures in Japan, The Starship Damrey is something of a survival horror puzzle game, devilishly elusive and refreshingly difficult and frightening. Free of tutorials or any kind of explanation at all, the player is thrown into the story, forced to fight the claustrophobia of being trapped in a cold sleep chamber on the aforementioned starship, with only their wits to solve the mystery.
