Shadow PAX: The Hidden Games of PAX East 2013 You Probably Didn’t See

shadowpax-header

It’s easy to get overwhelmed when you first enter the PAX East show floor. With over 200 exhibitors showing off over 500 products (at a minimum), there’s no way to see it all. In fact, it’s possible to seclude yourself in your own little piece of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and not realize that entire other worlds exist within the greater PAX East experience.

The “Three PAX Theory” is the belief that PAX East is actually three different conventions all smashed together. On the north side of the show floor, you have “Triple-A PAX.” That’s where your Nintendos and your Microsofts and your Ubisofts create massive booths, and a game like The Last of Us has a four-hour line. On the south side is “Indie PAX,” which houses the Indie Megabooth and a huge number of small developers who operate booths that are barely big enough for a TV and a few pins. Finally, on the extreme south side of the BCEC is “Tabletop PAX,” where it’s all dice and cards and there’s nary a video game in sight. I wish I had come up with it, but all credit for the “Three PAX Theory” must go to Jake “@jakeninja” Vander Ende.

However, there’s also a fourth side to PAX East that a lot of people don’t see. It takes place in the dark corners of the convention center and in gamer gathering places all across the city after the Expo Hall closes for the night. I like to call this “Shadow PAX.”

Daily Scoop: March 29, 2013 – Bye bye, March

March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb and all that jazz, or so the saying goes. Right now, temperatures are pretty mild, and it’s even making me consider opening my windows when I get home. But I feel like it’s a trap! Either way, it doesn’t matter, because it’s Friday. Woo!

No good deals going on today, which is a good thing. I mean, we just got back from PAX East, and there’s so much great stuff coming out that I don’t even want to look at deals for old games (even if Dishonored is only $29.99 on Amazon right now). I will not give in! I’m still working on Dead Space 3, and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, and I haven’t even opened BioShock: Infinite yet. Cut me a break, people! My backlog right now is all brand new games.

…I could have worse problems.

Anyway, what I do have is some great new t-shirts for you to check out. Buy ’em all!

So, my boyfriend Anthony and I have been trying to find an apartment, and it’s been a real adventure. We saw lots of places online, but today we saw our first place in-person, and it was a real doozy. Crappy apartments: 1; Nicole and Anthony: 0. The game’s not over yet, folks!

Journey collects six statues at 2013 GDC Awards including Game of the Year

journey-header

The people behind the 2013 Game Developers Choice Awards like Journey. They really, really like Journey. Of the 11 awards handed out last night, the thatgamecompany-developed title was named the winner of six of them: Best Audio, Best Game Design, Best Visual Arts, Best Downloadable Game, the Innovation Award, and Game of the Year.

“This year we saw some amazing titles developed in the indie and downloadable game space, and the critical acclaim that titles like Journey, FTL: Faster Than Light, The Walking Dead, and The Room received could not have been more deserved,” said Meggan Scavio, General Manager of the Game Developers Conference.

While the GDC Awards committee loved Journey, the first-ever Audience Choice Award went to Arkane Studios’ Dishonored. The people have spoken and they really, really like assassinating bad dudes in a steampunk setting!

A complete list of winners can be found after the break.

The Last of Us Hands-On Preview: Tension and Fear Win the Day

thelastofus-header

I wasn’t sure what to think when I first saw trailers for The Last of Us, Naughty Dog’s first non-Nathan Drake game in six years. It certainly looked like a Naughty Dog game, with the same style and graphics, but this was set in a post-apocalyptic world, one in which humans had been infected by a strange fungus, which left the victims zombified. The remaining survivors of humanity lived in terror in a wasteland. While the Uncharted games had dabbled in science fiction (remember those crazy mutants from the second game?), this was the studio’s first real deviation from reality. I was doubtful that they could pull it off, mainly because the market is so saturated with these types of games, and in the end, not many of them are that great. But from what I saw in the half hour demo at PAX East this past weekend, Naughty Dog just might succeed.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition sails past 6 million copies sold

minecraft360-header

The meteoric rise of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition has become the stuff of legend. The PC version was nothing short of a phenomenon, but I’m not sure anyone expected the game to sell five million copies in its first seven months of availability. It took a bit longer to tally their next million, but the team at 4J Studios is happy to announce that Minecraft’s Xbox 360 edition has now sold six million copies:

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition will get a chance to sell even more copies when the disc version of the game is released to stores on April 30.
