Daily Scoop: January 15, 2013 – Hammerlock Edition!

It’s finally January 15, which means the new Borderlands 2 DLC is out! I’m counting the minutes until I can go play it. I’m beyond excited! It looks like it’s going to be awesome, and here’s a trailer to prove it. I”m pretty excited about facing off against that new villain!

Well, let’s face it: I’m excited about all of it.

And there’s a good deal to go along with the DLC today – Borderlands 2 is just $29.99 on Amazon today on PS3 and Xbox 360. Go scoop it up and spend the other $30 you would have spent on the Season Pass! It’s like it was fated or something.

And now, time for t-shirts!

Street Fighter X Mega Man “Version 2” update available this Friday

goldenpixel2012-streetfighterxmegamanCapcom has announced (via their Capcom-Unity blog) that the “Version 2” update of Street Fighter X Mega Man will be available this Friday. Just like the original game, the update will available as a free download through Capcom-Unity’s Mega Man page.

“Version 2” comes with a variety of tweaks of fixes for the game including my own personal favorite… the debut of a Mega Man II-style password system!

The full list of changes is as follows:

  • Confirmation prompt before exiting (ESC) or resetting (F12) the game
  • E-Tank glitch and various other bugs fixed
  • Improved controller support (Game defaults to keyboard on launch; make sure controller is plugged in prior to opening the file, then go into Options menu and set keys)
  • Take screenshots using F9
  • M. Bison buffed a bit (This place shall become your grave!)

Like last time, I’m sure Street Fighter X Mega Man “Version 2” will do a number on Capcom-Unity’s servers. So plan accordingly.

Explore Double Fine’s The Cave next week

Double Fine’s latest game, The Cave, will be available next week, and this awesome little trailer shows off the seven characters you can choose from. It’s a pretty diverse group: Adventurer, Hillbilly, Knight, Monk, Scientist, Time Traveler, and “the Twins.” The Monk’s description was my favorite: “He seeks a journey filled with peace and enlightenment… and murder!” followed by evil laughter and an apology by the narrator, who is a talking cave.

Brought to you by creator Ron Gilbert (Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island) and Double Fine (Brütal Legend and Psychonauts), it’s a game you won’t want to miss. The Cave will be out on the PlayStation Network and Nintendo eShop for Wii U on January 22 for $14.99, and a day later on PC and the Xbox Live Arcade for $14.99/1200 Microsoft Points.

Today’s the day! Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt, the latest Borderlands 2 DLC, is available now for PC, PlayStation3, and Xbox 360. There are brand new environments, deadlier Hyperion technology (the deadliest you’ve ever seen, if the trailer is to be believed), and “buttloads of new loot.” Buttloads?!?! I cannot wait to get home and fire up my PS3! Professor Nakayama: it’s on.

Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt is priced at $9.99, or comes included with the Season Pass, if you picked one up.

New Super Mario Bros. U Review: Storm the Castle in an Above Average Mario Game

newsupermariobrosu-header

The Wii U’s launch brought with it one of the largest launch lineups in video game history and even larger expectations. But it also brought with it a brand new Mario game that was available on the system’s first day, something the world hasn’t seen since the Nintendo 64. New Super Mario Bros. U isn’t going to be the game changer that Super Mario 64 was, but it feels good to have a new Mario game released alongside a new Nintendo system.

2013 Independent Games Festival nominees announced

independentgamesfestival-header

The finalists have been announced for this year’s Independent Games Festival, and the lists are full of games I love, and games I can’t wait to love. I’m sad that 10000000 isn’t on there, considering that’s what would get my vote for the game that totally destroyed my life for two days. Well, I guess that might not be what developers want to be known for, but I promise – it’s a compliment.

Whether or not my favorite time on the iPad is represented here, there are plenty of great games being celebrated. Kentucky Route Zero is up for Excellence In Visual Art, Pixeljunk 4AM has been nominated for Excellence In Audio, and another one of my favorites, Super Hexagon, might just win Excellence In Design. The games will be playable at GDC in March on the expo floor. Hit the jump for the full list of categories, finalists, and honorable mentions.

Dust 514 enters open beta on January 22 as CCP merges Eve Online with PSN FPS

dust514-header

CCP Games has announced that their free-to-play PS3 first person shooter, Dust 514, will enter an open beta phase on January 22 as all PlayStation Network users will be able to download the game beginning next week.

The open beta was preceded by CCP’s merging of the Dust 514 game world and their MMO, Eve Online. According to CCP, the single persistent online universe that this merger has created is “something unprecedented in videogame history.”

“The launch of the Dust 514 Open Beta is another step towards our long-term vision for CCP and Eve,” said Hilmar Veigar Pétursson, CEO of CCP. “But this is just the beginning. As we have done with EVE Online, in the coming weeks, and for years to come, we will continually improve upon and add to the Dust 514 experience, as well as add deeper integration between the two games and their communities.”

If you can’t wait one more week, access to the Dust 514 closed beta is still available by purchasing the Dust 514 Mercenary Pack from the PlayStation Store.
