Fortress Review: Giving Solitaire A New Coat of Paint

Fortress is a little indie game on the App store made by Ray Merkler, a game designer in the Philadelphia area. Painstakingly crafted with love, Fortress is a one- or two-player game that recreates solitaire as a war game, giving it far more personality and fun. It doesn’t hurt that it’s cute, colorful, and pretty darn addictive. So what makes Fortress so special?

Nintendo Download: Prince of Persia, Balloon Pop Remix, more

The Super NES rendition of Jordan Mechner’s original Prince of Persia leads this weeks’s Nintendo Download. It’s joined by balloon popping, a Sudoku variant, and some kind of chicken killing simulation…

Prince of Perisa (Wii Virtual Console) – Survive perilous levels, rescue the princess from the evil Jaffar and claim the royalresidence before the hourglass is empty. Beware of obstacles such as unpredictable floors and ceilings, hidden spikes and walls of flames.

Balloon Pop Remix (3DS eShop) – Balloon Pop Remix takes the classic Balloon Pop formula and turns it on its head. Usethe stylus to draw lines on the puzzle board and all the balloons in the line’s path willpop, leading to mesmerizing chain reactions.

Hwyawake by Nikoli (3DS eShop) – “Heyawake” is a puzzle in which you fill in the spaces according to the rules. It’s called “heyawake” (“split rooms”) because the face of the board is divided into rooms.

Crazy Hunter (DSiWare) – Capture the hens that lay the golden eggs that are scattered around the world by creating a giant tower tall enough to reach the clouds where the hens are.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger returns to the Wild West

Ubisoft and developer Techland are bringing the Call of Juarez series back to its Wild West roots. The series previously took a short detour into the modern day with 2011’s Call of Juarez: The Cartel.

Announced today, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger follows an unnamed bounty hunter as he chases down “the West’s most notorious outlaws” (including Butch Cassidy!). Check out the live action trailer above and start drawing your “Wanted” poster for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 game now.

No release date for Call of Juarez: Gunslinger was announced, but I bet it’ll be released sometime in 2013, by gum.

Mario Warfare brings gunplay to Mushroom Kingdom… already better than 1993 film

A trailer has hit for “Mario Warfare,” an upcoming web series from an outfit known as Beatdown Boogie. It looks like someone has thrown all of our favourite Mario characters, the bravado of Call of Duty, and the bullet choreography from The Matrix into a crazy blender. The resulting trailer looks to be being something that is quite funny, and already outshines the notoriously awful Super Mario Bros. film.

No date has been set for the debut of the first episode (“And don’t ask!” the trailer threatens), so keep a watch on Beatdown Boogie via Facebook and Twitter for more information.

Double Fine’s The Cave is coming to Wii U too

While already scheduled for release on the PC, PSN and XBLA, Double Fine finally confirmed during their PAX Prime presentation that their upcoming game The Cave will also be coming to the Wii U. The downloadable title will be a great compliment to the GamePad’s screen.

With the usual brand of humour associated with Double Fine’s Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer, the title has been described as “an adventure game so odd and compelling that it can only be described as odd and compelling.”

“The concept of The Cave has been bouncing around in my head for many, many years, and then the little voices that tell me to do things said it was time to make the game,” explained Gilbert. The game itself is said to utilise concepts from Gilbert’s own 1987 classic, Maniac Mansion, with the player able to select three playable characters (from a group of seven) including a knight, a monk, a pair of street urchins, a time traveller and a hillbilly, to enter the magical talking titular Cave. Each character will have their own personality and traits used to solve the puzzles found within.
