Daily Scoop: September 4, 2012 – Hiatus over!

Hi there! Did you miss me? I was on vacation for the last 10 days, and it was amazing. I’m sure that you were sad and missed me, but fear not! I have returned, to bring you the best deals and the cutest game-related t-shirts on the Internet.

It’s been a really busy week for me. I did a lot of homework, played a lot of video games, read some books, played some board games and Dungeons and Dragons, and, oh yeah: my friend launched the Kickstarter I’m involved in. He’s making a game and I’m writing the story. Get in on the magic!

First up: Toys R Us is having a sale on some new and new-ish games. The sale is two for $60, which is pretty darn good for some of these titles. Take a look:

  • Prototype 2 for PS3 and Xbox 360 (retail is $49.99)
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for PS3 and Xbox 360 (retail is still $59.99)
  • Max Payne 3 for PS3 and Xbox 360 (retail is $59.99)
  • Darksiders II for PS3 and Xbox 360 (retail is $59.99)
  • Mass Effect 3 for PS3 and Xbox 360 (retail is $39.99)
  • The Amazing Spider-Man for PS3 and Xbox 360 (retail is $59.99)
  • NCAA Football 13 for PS3 and Xbox 360 (retail is $59.99)
  • Sleeping Dogs for PS3 and Xbox 360 (retail is $59.99)

Those are some pretty amazing savings. I want Darksiders II and Max Payne 3, but I also want to catch up on my ludicrously huge backlog, so go figure.

Next up: today’s awesome t-shirts!

New Resident Evil 6 demo coming September 18

Xbox 360 owners that purchased Dragon’s Dogma have also been able to enjoy an exclusive Resident Evil 6 demo for two months now. That demo will soon (as in, tomorrow) be available on the PlayStation Network, but Capcom hasn’t forgotten about the rest of us.

Beginning September 18, a brand new Resident Evil 6 demo will be added to the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Live Marketplace. The demo will include content from the game’s three main campaigns, playable in both single-player and online co-op. The three scenarios include:

Leon S. Kennedy and Helena Harper: “Further explore the dark corridors and moonlit grounds of Ivy University, swarming with the victims of the latest bioterrorist attack.”

Jake and Sherry Berkin: “fight off the J’avo, including their fully mutated forms, in the neon-lit streets of Lanshiang. Be sure to check out Jake’s special hand-to-hand combat moves and Sherry’s stun baton as you struggle to stay alive.”

Chris Redfield and Piers Nivans: “Chris and Piers head with fellow BSAA team members to the war-ravaged streets of Edonia. The amassed J’avo forces provide a stiff enough challenge, but that’s before the 3-story high B.O.W. Ogroman crashes the party. Select Piers for a slightly different weapons loadout than Chris including a sniper rifle with thermal scope.”

Resident Evil 6 will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 2.

Gearbox adds female characters to Aliens: Colonial Marines multiplayer

Given that the Alien film series has always featured strong female roles (including Ellen Ripley, Private Vasquez or Dr. Elizabeth Shaw in Prometheus), it seemed not only sexist but basically wrong when Aliens: Colonial Marines producer Brian Burleson announced there would be no female characters in the multiplayer portion of the game. After a major online petition, signed by over 4,000 people including several associated with the Aliens film, it finally caught the attention of Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford.

Speaking to Eurogamer at this weekend’s PAX Prime, the company’s head honcho revealed that the co-op mode and online multiplayer will both feature at least one playable female character. The company released artwork of the co-op character, Private Jennifer Running, a fiery, short-haired redhead. Whether she was created after the petition, or existed all along and was only revealed early because of the outcry, we will never really know.

While it is a great result for female gamers, or those males who wish to get it touch with their female roots, should we really have been having this discussion over a game set in the Aliens universe? What do you think, readers?

2K announces four DLC expansions, Season Pass for Borderlands 2

In a move certain to fan the flames of the DLC debate, 2K and Gearbox have announced four additional downloadable campaigns for Borderlands 2 before the retail game is even out. Each one will cost $9.99, meaning the total comes to $40, two thirds of the game’s actual price. Thankfully the company is offering a Season Pass, which will ensure that you’re the proud owner of all four DLC campaigns for only $30, saving you $10.

Minus the Season Pass, this is the same amount of content Gearbox created for the first Borderlands game.

I love Borderlands and the DLC for the original, But I still bought them through gritted teeth over the realization of spending $100 on a single game. Especially when the Game of the Year edition was released with all four campaigns included (and is now available for a mere $20). So if you love Gearbox’s humorous FPS and are flush with cash, the Season Pass may be for you. But for the rest of us, hold out for the GotY edition, which given current trends will probably be out this time next year.

Borderlands 2 will be available for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on September 18.

The Games of September 2012

It seems like a trip to Pandora is in the cards for most of the Warp Zoned staff, with the exception of our intrepid Editor-in-Chief. But I think we’ll be playing enough Borderlands 2 for him as well. There are plenty of good games coming out this month: from Kirby to the Lee twins, from the Family Guy cast to a boatload of Pandas, this month has something for everyone, and more than we could conceivably finish in four weeks. Read on to find out what we’ll be playing this busy September.

Brothers In Arms: Furious 4 will drop the Brothers In Arms name

Last month, Gearbox Software President Randy Pitchford promised that the company was still toiling away at Brothers In Arms: Furious 4. This weekend at PAX Prime, he revealed that while the game still hasn’t been canceled, it’ll no longer carry the “Brothers In Arms” name.

“I wanted to let everyone know that that game’s no longer going to be a Brothers In Arms game. It’s going to be an all-new IP,” Pitchford said.

First revealed at E3 2011, Furious 4’s comic tone was at odds with the franchise’s formerly serious structure. Instead, the co-op shooter seemed to be taking its cues from Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.

The all-new Furious 4 will be re-announced at a Gearbox Community Day event later this year.
