Insert Quarter: The Rich Lives of NPCs in Shadow of Mordor and Watch Dogs
Insert Quarter is our showcase for some of the best and most interesting writing about video games on the Internet.
In this installment, Austin Walker, writing for Paste, contemplates the rich lives of non-player characters found in Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and Watch Dogs. Each game attempts to create a background for each NPC, specifically the Orc Captains that stalk Shadow of Mordor’s Talion through the game’s “Nemesis System” and the petty criminals of Watch Dogs that cause pain for so many of the game’s other citizens.
I’ve been thinking about non-player characters for four months now. I’ve been thinking about them ever since I stood over the body of the eleventh man I killed in Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs. He had a sneering face and a stuffed bank account. The game told me that he was listed on FBI watch list. His name was William Jones. I shot him three times: twice in the back and once in the head.

Monolith offers the player all sorts of ways to fail [in Shadow of Mordor]. As Talion, I regularly overcommitted to combat deep inside of Orkish strongholds only to find myself surrounded by dozens of Uruk-hai, including a few powerful enemy captains. The Arkham series of games taught me that if I could just counter enough attacks, I’d never fail. No matter their number, the Joker’s henchmen would always leave room for me to knock them around. That is not the case here. Even in the final hours of the game, with almost all of Talion’s abilities unlocked, I was once dropped to one knee by ranged attacks and then instantly killed by a particularly strong captain. I wasn’t sent to a “Retry?” screen. Instead, the Orc who killed me rose in rank, and when he saw me later, laughed in my face. My failure—the act of my death—was not erased; it was just made more complicated, more interesting.

Weekly Warp-Up: Here Comes Nintendo Edition
No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…
Nintendo has always done their own thing. It’s their greatest strength and their biggest weakness. And it’s part of why the company is so beloved even as the PS4 and Xbox One surpass the Wii U in market share. This week, Nintendo took a bold step forward and told gamers… uh, don’t forget us, we still exist!
OK, so it wasn’t a major marketing push, this is still Nintendo after all.
But the consolemaker made a few big announcements this week, including confirmation that Super Smash Bros. For Wii U will be released on November 21. The company also confirmed that Super Smash Bros. For 3DS has sold almost three million copies so far, cementing it as one of this year’s biggest hits. But they weren’t done. Nintendo also announced that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, the adorable game everyone secretly wants to play, will be released on December 5. And they revealed their new “Nindies” line at IndieCade 2014, including a never-before-seen version of Beatbuddy for the Wii U.
Not a bad week for The Big N. More news from the week that was can be found after the break. (more…)

New Releases: Borderlands: Pre-Sequel, The Evil Within, PlayStation TV, More
While most of this Fall’s new releases are centered around showcasing the power of the PS4 and Xbox One, let’s not forget that previous-generation consoles like the PS3 and Xbox 360 are also in line for a few new games. (Meanwhile, the Wii U sits in the corner, doing its own thing, content in its existence.) And PS3/Xbox 360 owners should take note that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, perhaps the biggest PS3/Xbox 360 release of the Fall, will be available in stores this week. The third Borderlands game, which actually takes place between the first two titles in the series, will also be released for the PC.
Bethesda’s The Evil Within is not a previous-generation exclusive, but it will be release for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in addition to the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The Evil Within is Shinji Mikami’s return to horror and will likely be full of pants-wetting terror regardless of what platform you play it on.
The rest of this week’s new releases are a grab bag of games that run the gamut from a new Pac-Man game (Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2 on the 3DS, PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360) to a Duck Dynasty tie-in (Duck Dynasty on the 3DS, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One) to a passel of re-releases on new platforms (Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One; The Walking Dead on the PS4 and Xbox One; and The Walking Dead Season 2 on the PS3 and Xbox 360).
Finally, speaking of systems proclaiming their existence, Sony’s PlayStation TV set-top box, which plays Vita games and streams PlayStation Now content and local PS4 games, will be released this week.
A complete list of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions will be released on November 25
The first game from Activision’s reborn Sierra imprint, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, will be released this November. The game will be available to download for the PC (via Steam), PS3, and PS4 on November 25. Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners will have to wait a day longer as it’ll be available through the Xbox Games Store on November 26. Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions will be priced at $14.99 on all platforms.
Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions will add a 3D-like playing field to the franchise for the first time. Players will still control their gunship with an overhead view, but each stage will now take the form of a geometric shape that can be circumnavigated like a globe. Lucid Games, which is staffed by the former employees of original Geometry Wars developer Bizarre Creations, will also add new game modes and boss fights to Dimensions.
If you’re attending the IndieCade expo this weekend in Culver City, California, be sure to head over to the Sierra booth to get a chance to play Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions.
WB Games announces a ton of new characters for Lego Batman 3 including Conan O’Brien
First, we learned that Adam West would play himself in Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. Then came the news that Kevin Smith would bring his Fatman On Batman quips into the game as a playable character. But now, courtesy of WB Games’ New York Comic-Con panel, comes the news that Conan O’Brien will bring his pale force to the game as a playable character. But before dropping that bombshell, the panel announced a slew of new characters in rapid fire fashion. The full list includes…
- Jim Lee – The Co-Publisher at DC Comics.
- Mad Hatter, Man-Bat, Deadshot, Deathstroke, Kalibak, Polka-Dot Man and Detective Chimp – A gaggle of Bat villains and one talking monkey.
- Music Meister – A vilain from Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
- Darkest Knight Batman – Bruce Wayne as the Green Lantern.
- Solar Suit Superman – Superman in his deep space suit.
- Condiment King – A joke villain from Batman: The Animated Series.
- Green Loontern – Daffy Duck’s Duck Dodgers character dressed up as another green superhero.
Finally, WB Games and TT Games announced that Lego Batman 3 will receive a post-release DLC pack based on The CW’s Arrow. The appropriately-named Arrow Pack will include a new level, new vehicles, and eight new characters (Arrow, Diggle, Felicity Smoak, Helena “Huntress” Bertinelli, Slade Wilson, Roy Harper, Sarah “Black Canary” Lance, and Malcolm Merlyn). The Arrow Pack will be available for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham will be available for those platforms (as well as the 3DS, PC, Vita, and Wii U) on November 11.
Minecraft: PS Vita Edition will be available to download next week, in stores on 11/11
Minecraft is finally ready to shrink down to PS Vita size as Sony has announced (via the PlayStation Blog) that Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition will be available to download through the PlayStation Store next Tuesday, October 14. The digital edition will be followed by the release of a retail version on November 11.
Whether you download Minecraft direct to your Vita or purchase it in stores, the PlayStation Vita Edition will be priced at $19.99, just like its PS3 and PS4 counterparts. But if you already own Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition, you can download the PS Vita Edition for free as a Cross-Buy bonus. And if you don’t already own the game on the PS3, but are planning to purchase the Vita version next week, a free PS3 download is included in the deal. The same offer stands for November’s retail release as well. That’s how Cross-Buy works, after all.
A PlayStation 4 Edition upgrade option is also available for the Vita version for $4.99.
