Tales From the Borderlands is the result of a booze-fueled dare

talesfromtheborderlands-header

Did you ever wonder what made Gearbox Software and Telltale Games want to merge the run-and-gun gameplay of the Borderlands franchise with Telltale’s brand of episodic adventure games for Tales From the Borderlands? Apparently alcohol, and lots of it, had something to do with it.

Speaking to Polygon, Telltale’s Steve Allison revealed that initial discussions for the collaboration occured over several rounds of tequila backstage at the 2012 Spike TV Video Game Awards:

“We were backstage at the [2012] Spike VGAs,” Allison told Polygon. “And Gearbox was sitting at table one and we were sitting at table two — we were there for The Walking Dead. We got to talking a little bit, and I don’t remember when it the night it became, ‘we should do this thing,” but it happened over a few cocktails.”

“We could have easily left it and chalked it up to too much tequila, but we followed up when we got home,” he said. “And they remembered the conversation.”

The rest of the interview is well worth a read as Allison also discusses Telltale’s Game of Thrones adaptation and how the team plans to tackle four projects at the same time.

Daily Scoop: December 23, 2013 – Time for you to buy Monaco

I know I tell you to buy a lot of games, but that’s kind of the whole point of this column – it’s a place where I put all of the amazing deals that I find. I don’t expect you to buy all of them; heck, I don’t even buy all of them. But there’s one deal that can’t be missed today, and that’s Monaco on sale for $2.99 at the Humble Store. This is a super fun game if you like playing games online or local co-op. It supports up to four players and, while difficult, can be really fun, too. They’ve got plenty of other sales for the next 24 hours, too – so many good ones that I need to avert my gaze.

There are also loads of digital games on sale at Amazon right now. The BioShock Triple Pack is $14.99, the Borderlands 2 and Borderlands GOTY Pack is $11.99, the Max Payne Complete Pack is $6.99, Spec Ops: The Line is $5.99, and the XCOM: Enemy Unknown and XCOM: Enemy Within Pack is $19.99… among many, many others.

And now for something that isn’t digital… t-shirts!

Nordic Games will release MX vs ATV: Supercross in 2014

mxvsatvsupercross-announce

Nordic Games has finally begun to do something with all those franchises they acquired from THQ. The Austrian publisher has announced that they will release MX vs ATV: Supercross in the first half of 2014 for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. The game will be developed by a dedicated team made up of many former members of original MX vs ATV developer Rainbow Studios/THQ Digital Phoenix.

Ken George, the Executive Producer of MX vs ATV Supercross, is thrilled about his lead role in resurrecting the series: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be working with Nordic Games because they appreciate the team’s passion and dedication to bring the feel of real motocross racing to MX vs ATV fans. Not just the adrenaline rush, but the whole experience from top to bottom. A lot of the original team members have been aching to continue their passion: building the most authentic off-road racing games possible. The hiatus is over, and the team is back to work on MX vs ATV with great new things to come.”

George’s team will also oversee the online maintenance of MX vs ATV Alive and MX vs ATV Reflex and plan to restore online play soon.

Weekly Warp-Up: Last Minute Shopping Edition

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Did you know that Kohl’s (and Toys R Us) will not close for the next 90 hours? Who would go to Kohl’s at like four in the morning to shop for clothes? That’s madness! But that is apparently the reality we live in now.

So how about a little unreality to go along with it? Like the unreal notion that the Contra-inpsired crazines of Bullet Bros did not reach its Kickstarter goal? We sat down with developer Jason Stokes and got “Deep in the [Stuff]” discussing the game, moustache rides, and November rain.

Our UK Correspondent, Andrew Rainnie, also checked in with the state of the Wii U again and he has tried to make the case that it’s The Little Engine That Could (and Should). If you love your Wii U, you should check it out.

If you haven’t already left the house to go to Kohl’s, hit the jump for more news from the week that was.
