Zombi, Volume, The Bridge, Resident Evil Revelations 2 Vita, more added to PS Store

zombiu-header

Zombies are overtaking the PlayStation Store! It’s unlikely this is a stealth tie-in with the premiere of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, but three new Zed-themed games are now available through the online storefront:

  • Zombi was one of the Wii U’s most-acclaimed launch titles in 2012 (where it was known as ZombiU) and its now available on the PS4 thanks to Ubisoft. Inventory management with the Wii U GamePad is obviously a thing of the past, but Ubisoft still won’t let players pause the action when they’re rummaging around in their ruck sacks.
  • Curses N Chaos is also available for the PS4 (and the Vita as a Cross-Buy title), but its quite a different type of zombie game. As a side-scrolling arena fighter, players are forced to battle it out with all manner of ghouls (including the walking undead) as an evil Wizard King cackles over his evilness.
  • Finally, Resident Evil Revelations 2 makes the jump to the Vita by giving up its episodic release schedule. The game’s structure still includes distinct chapters, but players will have to pay for the whole thing up front if they want to partake in the further adventures of Claire Redfield.

Also available this week is Volume (PS4), Mike Bithell’s stealthy follow-up to Thomas Was Alone; The Bridge (PS4/PS3/Vita Cross-Buy), a side-scrolling puzzle platformer inspired by M.C. Escher; and Dungeon Travelers 2: The Royal Library & The Monster Seal, a first-person turn-based RPG for the Vita. And if you’re into episodic gaming, Telltale’s Tales From the Borderlands: Escape Plan Bravo brings the series closer to its conclusion on the PS3 and PS4.

More information on all of these games (and a few others) can be found after the break. And a complete list of this week’s new game add-ons can be found at the PlayStation Blog.

Splatoon’s next Splatfest (on August 29) will determine the fate of the universe by pitting the Autobots against the Decepticons

splatoon-transformers

The ultimate battle for the soul of Cybertron will be settled on the Splatoon battlefield next week as the fourth North American Splatfest will pit fans of the Autobots against minions of the Decepticons. As Optimus Prime said to Megatron in Transformers: The Movie, “One shall stand, and one shall fall.”

The Splatfest will take place on Saturday, August 29 and last the typical 24 hours, running from midnight to midnight all day long. Players are encouraged to choose their side now for the Transformers-themed event, and once you pick your side, you’ll receive one of the snazzy t-shirts shown above. It’s a shame we’ll have to give it back!

And don’t forget, if you haven’t played Splatoon yet, there’s a Global Testfire demo this weekend that’ll be available to everyone.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege pushed back to December 1

tomclancysrainbowsixsiege

Ubisoft has alerted us (via the UbiBlog) to the fact that Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege will miss its originally planned October 13 release date. Instead, the game will now be available on store shelves for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on December 1:

[W]e’ve decided to push the release date of Rainbow Six Siege to December 1, 2015 for all regions. This wasn’t an easy decision, but based on the feedback we’ve received, and based on our own internal tests, we felt there are adjustments and improvements we can make, including improving the co-op experience across all game modes, weapon and gadget balancing, as well as menu and interface navigation. We’re taking a little more time to make these changes, and we think it’s the right call.

The development team plans to go ahead with the game’s closed beta, which is still scheduled to begin on September 24. They believe that the extended development time, and the valuable feedback they’ll obtain from the beta, will allow them to make Rainbow Six: Siege the best game it can be.

A spokesman for Ubisoft Montreal reiterated that they believe this is the right move: “That extra testing and added polish will make [Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege] a higher-quality experience at launch.”

Activision will launch Skylanders BattleCast mobile card game in 2016

Having captured the hearts and minds of mobile gamers everywhere with Hearthstone, Activision is looking to do it again in 2016 with Skylanders BattleCast.

Like Hearthstone, Skylanders BattleCast will be a free-to-play collectible card game for mobile devices. But unlike Hearthstone, Activision plans to print physical cards for Skylanders BattleCast that players will need to scan to add to their digital collection. These physical cards can be collected and traded outside the app, and digital packs can be purchased to further augment your card collection.

Writing on the Activision Games Blog, the publisher also revealed they are consulting pro card players and experts in physical card game design to make sure they get it right:

Alongside the talented development teams behind the Skylanders franchise, we’ve assembled a team of experts across physical card game design, pro card players, and the top card artists to help create an authentic card battle experience with Skylanders BattleCast.

We don’t know exactly how Skylanders BattleCast will work just yet, but this commitment is an encouraging sign. Even though the full game won’t be available until 2016, players will get a chance to try out Skylanders BattleCast beginning September 20 by downloading a special preview app through their iOS or Android device.

Van Halen’s “Panama” added to Rock Band 4; More VH tracks available as DLC post-launch

Yesterday, Harmonix announced that Van Halen will be part of the Rock Band franchise for the first time in Rock Band 4. Originally released in 1984, “Panama” could easily be considered the band’s signature song (though “Jump” and “Hot For Teacher” might give it a run for its money).

If it seems surprising that its taken this long for Van Halen to collaborate with Harmonix, there’s a good reason behind it. Back in 2009, the band signed a deal with Activision to created Guitar Hero: Van Halen, the final band-specific produced before the series went on hiatus in 2010.

“For years we’ve wanted to bring Van Halen’s music to Rock Band,” said Harmonix CEO Steve Janiak. “Not only are the songs incredible in their own right, but they’re amazingly fun to play and perform, whether you’re on guitar, bass, drums, or vocals.”

If you need more Van Halen in your Rock Band, don’t worry, Harmonix plans to add more songs from the band’s catalog to the Rock Band Music Store after Rock Band 4 launches for the PS4 and Xbox One on October 6.
