Bungie and Nathan Fillion tease Destiny 2’s “Worldwide Reveal Trailer” with “Last Call” teaser

An official Destiny 2 announcement is coming soon, and to help build the hype, Bungie released a brand new teaser trailer today starring everyone’s favorite Vanguard, Cayde-6 (Firefly‘s Nathan Fillion). The cyborg is seen lamenting the destruction of his favorite bar… which is then interrupted by several huge explosions.

Destiny 2’s “Worldwide Reveal Trailer” will be available on Thursday, March 30, at 1:00 PM (Eastern Time). Earlier this week, Bungie also unveiled the game’s official logo.

Bungie unveils the official logo for Destiny 2

With Destiny 2‘s lengthy development cycle nearing its end, Bungie finally gave fans their first look at the game’s logo earlier today on Twitter.

In the three years that Destiny 2 has been in development, we’ve learned the game is in the works the PS4 and Xbox One, and that a PC launch is also a definite possibility. And thanks to last week’s poster leak, we’re also reasonably sure it’ll be released on September 8.

But even though we’re clearly getting closer to Destiny 2’s “official” announcement, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the game. Hopefully, Bungie will fill in some of the gaps sooner, rather than later.

Rumor: Leaked poster reveals September 8 release date for Destiny 2

Bungie has been promising a Fall 2017 launch date for Destiny 2 for quite a while now, so fans have been patiently awaiting the game’s official announcement. That didn’t happen today, but a leaked poster from a GameStop in Italy may have confirmed the game’s release date.

According to the Italian news site Lega Network, Destiny 2 will be released on September 8. Furthermore, the poster also states that a beta is planned, along with exclusive extra content for PS4 players.

And according to a separate report by Kotaku, not only is the poster real, but an official announcement for Destiny 2 will be happening “soon.”

How soon is “soon”? I have no idea. But I’ve suddenly got a hankering to watch Spaceballs again…

Activision: Fans are going to love Destiny 2, which will be released in Fall 2017

Bungie still isn’t ready to officially announce Destiny 2 just yet, but Activision executives continued to talk up its imminent release during a quarterly financial report yesterday.

Activision COO Thomas Tippl confirmed the game is still on track for a 2017 launch, and also said it’ll be followed by a “content season” of downloadable expansions:

Activision, along with their partners at Bungie, plan to answer the call with the release of a full Destiny sequel later this year, designed to thrill our existing loyal fan base and bring many new players into the fold. We plan to support the release of the sequel, with a great content plan post launch, setting the stage for growth with this year’s sequel and the content season that will follow.

Later in the same report, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg promised that Destiny fans are “going to love this game,” and narrowed down the release window to Fall 2017.

Activision reconfirms Destiny 2 will launch in 2017

destiny-header

Bungie has produced four expansions for Destiny since its launch in 2014, and after re-releasing all the add-ons as part of Destiny: The Collection in September, the developer has now set their sights on the future and Destiny 2. Publisher Activision is also ready to start talking about the second game in the shooter series, and it came up several times during yesterday’s quarterly financial report.

COO Thomas Tippl started things off with confirmation that Destiny 2 will indeed be released sometime in 2017: “Activision and our talented partners at Bungie are hard at work on a sequel to Destiny which should energize both Destiny’s passionate fan base and bring millions of new fans to the franchise next year.”

Later, CFO Dennis Durkin added that Activision expects the sequel to broaden the appeal of Destiny even further: “We’re on track and really excited about what we think is going to be an awesome sequel for Destiny in 2017. No announcements today on timing just yet. But what I will say is, that sequel is designed to both excite our highly-engaged current players, but also to broaden the appeal even further, bringing in new fans and bringing back lapsed fans, as well. So that’s our primary focus right now.”

Activision and Bungie are keeping a tight hold on information related to Destiny 2, so it’s unknown exactly what gameplay changes might “broaden the appeal” of the franchise. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about the sequel soon.

Activision confirms Skylanders 6, new Call of Duty from Infinity Ward, Destiny expansion in 2016; Destiny 2 coming in 2017

activisionlogo

Activision revealed a first look at their 2016 release slate during today’s quarterly financial report… and you’ll never believe what they announced. Nah, I’m just kidding, even an amateur prognosticator could figure out what Activision has in store for this year.

First up, the publisher confirmed that Infinity Ward will develop the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise, which will be released this Fall. The developer’s most recent game was 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts, and right now it’s unknown if they’ll continue with that story or move in a different direction. But we do the currently untitled Call of Duty 2016 will be Infinity Ward’s first in Activision’s new three-developer cycle for the series.

Activision is also aiming to launch the sixth entry in the Skylanders series in Fall 2016. Skylanders 6 is in development at Toys For Bob and will be released alongside Skylanders Academy, a new television series based on the franchise.

Bungie’s Destiny will receive more content in 2016, but don’t expect a full-fledged sequel just yet. Another “large” expansion to the original game will be released this year, and the famed developer announced they’ll launch Destiny 2 in 2017.

Finally, Blizzard got a chance to discuss their plans for 2016, but the developer just reiterated a release schedule that we’ve known for a while. Overwatch, their upcoming hero shooter, is on track for a Spring 2016 release on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. And World of Warcraft: Legion, the sixth expansion to the world’s favorite MMO, will be released this Summer, just after the June premiere of the Warcraft movie.

Development begins on Destiny 2 as Activision reveals Destiny has 9.5 million users

destiny-header

When Activision and Bungie signed their ten-year pact to produce Destiny, it was always assumed that the deal would extend to additional games in the series. Yesterday, during their quarterly conference call, Activision executives have confirmed that Destiny 2 is now in active development.

Eric Hirshberg, the CEO of Activision Publishing, told investors: “Work has also begun on future expansion packs [for Destiny] as well as on our next full-game release. We’re very pleased with the launch and continuing engagement, and we’ll update you on our progress on future calls.”

In other Destiny news, Activision has also announced that the game currently boasts more than 9.5 million users. These players appear to be putting a ton of time into Destiny as “active players” are averaging more than three hours of playtime per day. It’s unknown how that playerbase translates into copies sold, but the publisher said that Destiny has generated more than $500 million in revenue since its September 9 launch. Assuming $60 per copy, that roughly correlates to more than eight million copies sold.

And don’t forget, Destiny’s first expansion, The Dark Below, will be released on December 9.

Bungie’s New Universe is an MMO spanning four games; first title is Xbox 360 exclusive

As the lawsuit between Activision and Infinity Ward founders Jason West and Vincent Zampella drags on, the court proceedings have caused several enlightening bits of information to come to light. But none is more interesting than yesterday’s public reveal of the contract between Activision and Bungie.

The contract was requested by West and Zampella to show that the contract they signed with Activision was a lesser deal compared to the decade-long agreement that Bungie was given. I’m not sure why that matters since Bungie was (and is) an independent development studio and Infinity Ward was (and is) owned-and-operated by Activision. But some good came out of its release as the Los Angeles Times obtained a copy of the contract and put it on the Internet for all to see.

You’ll definitely want to read all the highlights relating to Bungie’s New Universe after the break. (more…)
